    Three-body treatment of the penetration through the Coulomb field of a two-fragment nucleus

    On the basis of the Faddeev integral equations method and the Watson- Feshbach concept of the effective (optical) interaction potential, the first fully consistent three-body approach to the description of the penetration of a charged particle through the Coulomb field of a two-particle bound complex (composed of one charged and one neutral particles) has been developed. A general formalism has been elaborated and on its basis, to a first approximation in the Sommerfeld parameter, the influence of the nuclear structure on the probability of the penetration of a charged particle (the muon, the pion, the kaon and the proton) through the Gamow barrier of a two-fragment nucleus (the deuteron and the two lightest lambda hypernuclei, lambda hypertriton and lambda hyperhelium-5, has been calculated and studied.Comment: LaTeX, 30 pages, 4 eps figure

    Shape parameters of Galactic open clusters

    (abridged) In this paper we derive observed and modelled shape parameters (apparent ellipticity and orientation of the ellipse) of 650 Galactic open clusters identified in the ASCC-2.5 catalogue. We provide the observed shape parameters of Galactic open clusters, computed with the help of a multi-component analysis. For the vast majority of clusters these parameters are determined for the first time. High resolution ("star by star") N-body simulations are carried out with the specially developed ϕ\phiGRAPE code providing models of clusters of different initial masses, Galactocentric distances and rotation velocities. The comparison of models and observations of about 150 clusters reveals ellipticities of observed clusters which are too low (0.2 vs. 0.3), and offers the basis to find the main reason for this discrepancy. The models predict that after 50\approx 50 Myr clusters reach an oblate shape with an axes ratio of 1.65:1.35:11.65:1.35:1, and with the major axis tilted by an angle of qXY30q_{XY} \approx 30^\circ with respect to the Galactocentric radius due to differential rotation of the Galaxy. Unbiased estimates of cluster shape parameters require reliable membership determination in large cluster areas up to 2-3 tidal radii where the density of cluster stars is considerably lower than the background. Although dynamically bound stars outside the tidal radius contribute insignificantly to the cluster mass, their distribution is essential for a correct determination of cluster shape parameters. In contrast, a restricted mass range of cluster stars does not play such a dramatic role, though deep surveys allow to identify more cluster members and, therefore, to increase the accuracy of the observed shape parameters.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Organic geochemistry of crude oils from the turija oil field (SE Pannonian Basin, Serbia)

    The Turija oil field, being an important oil field in Serbia, is located in the Banat Depression of the southeastern part of the Pannonian Basin. Oil samples from the Turija oil field were investigated in order to estimate origin, depositional environment, thermal maturity and age of the corresponding source rocks. For that purpose, a comprehensive analysis of biomarkers and aromatic compounds was performed. n-Alkanes are predominant compounds in the total ion chromatograms of saturated fractions of all samples, showing that Turija oils are not biodegraded. The distributions of n-alkanes, which are characterised by equivalent abundances of long- and short-chain homologues and maximums at C17, C21 and C27, suggest a mixed aquatic-terrestrial origin. The uniform distributions of regular C27-C29 5α(H)14α(H)17α(H) 20(R) steranes support the previous assumption. The presence of oleanane in all samples is indicative for a contribution of angiosperm plants to the precursor organic matter (OM). Furthermore, the presence of this biomarker implies the Upper Cretaceous or younger age of the corresponding source rocks. Isoreniratane and its derivatives have been identified in all samples. Although isorenieratane can originate from β-carotene, which is widespread in algae, bacteria and terrestrial plants, the presence of other catagenetic products of isorenieratene (mass fragmentogram m/z 133 of the aromatic fraction) unambiguously confirms a contribution of green sulphur bacteria Chlorobiaceae to the precursor organic material [1]. The pristane to phytane (Pr/Ph) ratio ranges from 0.64 to 1.17, indicating reducing to dysoxic conditions during the deposition of precursor OM. The presence of the above mentioned isorenieratane derivatives implies the photic zone of anoxia. The stratification of water column is also supported by the presence of gammacerane and values of gammacerane index, GI = gammacerane x 10/(gammacerane + C30 17α(H)21β(H)-hopane) > 1 in almost all the samples. Alkylated 2-methyl-2- (4,8,12-trimethyltridecyl) chromans (MTTCs) were detected in all studied oils. A predominance of 5,7,8-trimethyl-MTTC over 5,8-dimethyl-MTTC, 7,8-dimethyl-MTTC and 8-methyl-MTTC, associated with the values of MTTC ratio (MTTC = 5,7,8-trimethyl-MTTC/ΣMTTCs) in 0.44 to 0.65 range, indicates deposition of OM in a brackish environment [2]. The maturity of Turija oils was determined using typical sterane and hopane isomerisation maturity parameters and methyldibenzothiophene ratio, MDBTR = 4-MDBT/1-MDBT [3].     We extend the phase field crystal method for nonequilibrium patterning to stochastic systems with external source where transient dynamics is essential. It was shown that at short time scales the system manifests pattern selection processes. These processes are studied by means of the structure function dynamics analysis.     The purpose of the article: The article clarifies and justifies the mission of a modern regional university, which focuses on the activities of a university on the development of human capital in the region.Materials and methods: Based on the data of scientific literature, strategic documents of the state, materials of regional statistics, surveys of respondents, the strategic direction of the formation of a regional university is justified - orientation of its mission, research and educational activities on the development of human capital. A range of directions for improving the functioning of a regional university has been proposed and justified in order to bring the content of its activities in line with the regional focus and the new mission.Results of the research: Regional universities are presented in the article as high-tech educational organizations of higher education, the vector of strategic development of which should be focused on maximum integration into the economy and social sphere of the regions. Structural components of human capital are proposed - education capital, health capital, labor, cultural and moral capital, intellectual capital, entrepreneurial capital, social capital, cyclically interacting with each other in the process of personal and professional development of a teacher. Applications: This research can be used for universities, teachers, and students.     Context. In the absence of complete kinematic data it has not previously been possible to furnish accurate lists of member stars for all moving groups. There has been an unresolved dispute concerning the apparent inconsistency of the Hipparcos parallax distance to the Pleiades. Aims. To find improved candidate lists for clusters and associations represented among Hipparcos stars, to establish distances, and to cast light on the Pleiades distance anomaly. Methods. We use a six dimensional fitting procedure to identify candidates, and plot CMDs for 20 of the nearest groups. We calculate the mean parallax distance for all groups. Results. We identify lists of candidates and calculated parallax distances for 42 clusters and 45 associations represented within the Hipparcos catalogue. We find agreement between parallax distance and photometric distances for the most important clusters. For single stars in the Pleiades we find mean parallax distance 125.6 \pm 4.2 pc and photometric distance 132 \pm 3 pc calibrated to nearby groups of similar in age and composition. This gives no reason to doubt either the Hipparcos database or stellar evolutionary theory.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy Letters, 10 pages, 2 fig

    A New Nearby Candidate Star Cluster in Ophiuchus at d = 170 pc

    The recent discoveries of nearby star clusters and associations within a few hundred pc of the Sun, as well as the order of magnitude difference in the formation rates of the embedded and open cluster populations, suggests that additional poor stellar groups are likely to be found at surprisingly close distances to the Sun. Here I describe a new nearby stellar aggregate found by virtue of the parallel proper motions, similar trigonometric parallaxes, and consistent color-magnitude distribution of its early-type members. The 120 Myr-old group lies in Ophiuchus at dd \simeq 170 pc, with its most massive member being the 4th-magnitude post-MS B8II-III star μ\mu Oph. The group may have escaped previous notice due to its non-negligible extinction (AVA_V \simeq 0.9 mag). If the group was born with a normal initial mass function, and the nine B- and A-type systems represent a complete system of intermediate-mass stars, then the original population was probably of order \sim200 systems. The age and space motion of the new cluster are very similar to those of the Pleiades, α\alpha Per cluster, and AB Dor Moving Group, suggesting that these aggregates may have formed in the same star-forming complex some 108\sim10^8 yr ago.Comment: 23 pages, 3 figs., to appear in Nov. 2006 A

    Unusual microwave response and bulk conductivity of very thin fese0.3te0.7 films as a function of temperature

    Results of X-band microwave surface impedance measurements of FeSe1-xTex very thin film are reported. The effective surface resistance shows appearance of peak at T less and near Tc when plotted as function of temperature. The authors suggests that the most well-reasoned explanation can be based on the idea of the changing orientation of the microwave magnetic field at a SN phase transition near the surface of a very thin film. The magnetic penetration depth exhibits a power-law behavior of delta lambda proportional to T with an exponent n = 2.4 at low temperatures, which is noticeably higher than in the published results on FeSe1-xTexsingle crystal. However the temperature dependence of the superfluid conductivity remains very different from the behavior described by the BCS theory. Experimental results are fitted very well by a two-gap model with delta1/kTc=0.43 and delta2/kTc=1.22,thus supporting s(+-)- wave symmetry. The rapid increase of the quasiparticle scattering time is obtained from the microwave impedance measurements.Comment: 13 pages, 13 figure

    Commensurate-Incommensurate Magnetic Phase Transition in Magnetoelectric Single Crystal LiNiPO4_4

    Neutron scattering studies of single-crystal LiNiPO4_4 reveal a spontaneous first-order commensurate-incommensurate magnetic phase transition. Short- and long-range incommensurate phases are intermediate between the high temperature paramagnetic and the low temperature antiferromagnetic phases. The modulated structure has a predominant antiferromagnetic component, giving rise to satellite peaks in the vicinity of the fundamental antiferromagnetic Bragg reflection, and a ferromagnetic component giving rise to peaks at small momentum-transfers around the origin at (0,±Q,0)(0,\pm Q,0). The wavelength of the modulated magnetic structure varies continuously with temperature. It is argued that the incommensurate short- and long-range phases are due to spin-dimensionality crossover from a continuous to the discrete Ising state. These observations explain the anomalous first-order transition seen in the magnetoelectric effect of this system

    A Spitzer view of protoplanetary disks in the gamma Velorum cluster

    We present new Spitzer Space Telescope observations of stars in the young ~5 Myr gamma Velorum stellar cluster. Combining optical and 2MASS photometry, we have selected 579 stars as candidate members of the cluster. With the addition of the Spitzer mid-infrared data, we have identified 5 debris disks around A-type stars, and 5-6 debris disks around solar-type stars, indicating that the strong radiation field in the cluster does not completely suppress the production of planetesimals in the disks of cluster members. However, we find some evidence that the frequency of circumstellar primordial disks is lower, and the IR flux excesses are smaller than for disks around stellar populations with similar ages. This could be evidence for a relatively fast dissipation of circumstellar dust by the strong radiation field from the highest mass star(s) in the cluster. Another possibility is that gamma Velorum stellar cluster is slightly older than reported ages and the the low frequency of primordial disks reflects the fast disk dissipation observed at ~5 Myr.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal: 32 pages; 11 Figure
