Cost effective use of liquid nitrogen in cryogenic wind tunnels

    Get PDF
A method of reliquefying from 12 to 19% of the nitrogen exhaust gas from a cryogenic wind tunnel has been developed. Technical feasibility and cost effectiveness of the system depends on performance of an innovative positive displacement expander which requires scale model testing to confirm design studies. The existing cryogenic system at the 0.3-m transonic cryogenic tunnel has been surveyed and extensive upgrades proposed. Upgrades are generally cost effective and may be implemented immediately since they are based on established technology

Association Between Smoking and Tuberculosis Infection: A Population Survey in a High Tuberculosis Incidence Area

    Get PDF
Associations between smoking and tuberculosis disease including death from tuberculosis have been reported, but there are few reports on the influence of smoking on the risk of developing Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. The aim of this study was to determine the association between smoking and M tuberculosis infection. In a cross sectional population survey, data on smoking and tuberculin skin test (TST) results of 2401 adults aged >15 years were compared. A total of 1832 (76%) subjects had a positive TST (>10 mm induration). Of 1309 current smokers or ex-smokers, 1070 (82%) had a positive TST. This was significantly higher than for never smokers (unadjusted OR 1.99, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.62 to 2.45). A positive relationship with pack-years was observed, with those smoking more than 15 pack-years having the highest risk (adjusted OR 1.90,95% CI 1.28 to 2.81). Smoking may increase the risk of M tuberculosis infection.\u

Events, processes, and the time of a killing

    Get PDF
The paper proposes a novel solution to the problem of the time of a killing (ToK), which persistently besets theories of act-individuation. The solution proposed claims to expose a crucial wrong-headed assumption in the debate, according to which ToK is essentially a problem of locating some event that corresponds to the killing. The alternative proposal put forward here turns on recognizing a separate category of dynamic occurents, viz. processes. The paper does not aim to mount a comprehensive defense of process ontology, relying instead on extant defenses. The primary aim is rather to put process ontology to work in diagnosing the current state of play over ToK, and indeed in solving it

Who are the potential energy-efficient product buyers? A market segmentation based on consumption values

    Get PDF
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to identify and profile potential segments of users of energyefficient appliances in South Africa. Although previous studies have investigated eco-friendly consumer segments, a segmentation of users of energy-efficient appliances based on consumption values and other key antecedents to the adoption of energy-efficient products such as purchase intention and consumers’ attention to environmental labels is lacking. Using data obtained from a survey involving 550 users of appliances with energy rating living in the Gauteng province, this study applied the cluster analysis to identify the relevant segments. Three distinctive segments were identified and appeared to significantly differ across consumption values, the intention to purchase energy-efficient products and the attention paid to the energy-efficiency rating of the product in a purchase situation. The segments were further profiled across demographic variables. Important recommendations were made for policy makers and marketing practitioners

The size of two-body weakly bound objects : short versus long range potentials

    Get PDF
The variation of the size of two-body objects is investigated, as the separation energy approaches zero, with both long range potentials and short range potentials having a repulsive core. It is shown that long range potentials can also give rise to very extended systems. The asymptotic laws derived for states with angular momentum l=1,2 differ from the ones obtained with short range potentials. The sensitivity of the asymptotic laws on the shape and length of short range potentials defined by two and three parameters is studied. These ideas as well as the transition from the short to the long range regime for the l=0 case are illustrated using the Kratzer potential.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letter

Power transformer under short-circuit fault conditions: A multiphysics approach

    Get PDF
Transformers’ windings experience mechanical loads from electromagnetic forces due to the currents they carry. During normal operation, the resulting stresses and strains have minor influence, therefore they do not represent the significant risk to the devices’ integrity. However, transformers can suffer from high sudden short-circuit currents that are several times higher than those during the normal operation. These short-circuit currents are a significant threat, not only from an electrical but also from the structural integrity point of view. In this paper, coupled electromagnetic and structural mechanics simulations are carried out to evaluate short-circuit fault risks in a comprehensive and accurate way
