Characterization of Open Circuit Voltage and Capacity as a Function of Time
It is noted from the data presented that Li/BCX cells lose approximately 8% of their rated capacity in the first 2 months of storage. After this period of time, little difference is noted in the average realized capacity; however, a significant increase in the range is observed. Over the same period of time the OCV falls at a rate of 0.02V per 1,000 hours. After a period of 8,000 hours the OCV appears stabilize at a value of approximately 3.75V. This may be related to changes in Cl2 concentration due to self-discharge or other reactions. These data indicate that no correlation exists between the reduced open circuit voltage and the realized capacity

Haptic foot pedal : influence of shoe type, age, and gender on subjective pulse perception
This study investigates the influence of shoe type (sneakers and safety boots), age, and gender on the perception of haptic pulse feedback provided by a prototype accelerator pedal in a running stationary vehicle. Haptic feedback can be a less distracting alternative to traditionally visual and auditory in-vehicle feedback. However, to be effective, the device delivering the haptic feedback needs to be in contact with the person. Factors such as shoe type vary naturally over the season and could render feedback that is perceived well in one situation, unnoticeable in another. In this study, we evaluate factors that can influence the subjective perception of haptic feedback in a stationary but running car: shoe type, age, and gender. Thirty-six drivers within three age groups (≤39, 40-59, and ≥60) took part. For each haptic feedback, participants rated intensity, urgency, and comfort via a questionnaire. The perception of the haptic feedback is significantly influenced by the interaction between the pulse's duration and force amplitude and the participant's age and gender but not shoe type. The results indicate that it is important to consider different age groups and gender in the evaluation of haptic feedback. Future research might also look into approaches to adapt haptic feedback to the individual driver's preferences. Findings from this study can be applied to the design of an accelerator pedal in a car, for example, for a nonvisual in-vehicle warning, but also to plan user studies with a haptic pedal in general
Thermal Radiation from Nucleons and Mesons
Thermal photon emission rates due to meson-nucleon interactions have been
evaluated. An exhaustive set of reactions involving p(\bar p), n(\bar n), rho,
omega, a_1, pi and eta is seen to provide a sizeable contribution to the
emission rate from hot hadronic matter. Contributions from baryonic resonances
are found to be negligibly small
Polarization phenomena in the reaction NN to NNpi near threshold
First calculations for spin-dependent observables of the reactions , and near threshold are presented,
employing the J\"ulich model for pion production. The influence of resonant
(via the excitation of the ) and non-resonant p-wave pion
production mechanisms on these observables is examined. For the reactions and nice agreement of our predictions with the
presently available data on spin correlation coefficents is observed whereas
for the description of the data is less satisfying.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Associated strangeness production at threshold
The associated strangeness dissociation at threshold has been studied at the
COSY-11 facility measuring the hyperon - and the K+K- meson pair production.
Measurements of the near threshold Lambda and Sigma0 production via the pp ->
pK+ Lambda / Sigma0 reaction at COSY-11 have shown that the Lambda / Sigma0
cross section ratio exceeds the value at high excess energies (Q >= 300 MeV) by
an order of magnitude. For a better understanding additional data have been
taken between 13 MeV and 60 MeV excess energy.
The near threshold production of the charged kaon-antikaon pair is related to
the discussion about the nature of the scalar states in the 1 GeV/c^2 mass
range, i.e. the f0(980) and a0(980). The interpretation as a K anti-K molecule
is strongly dependent on the K anti-K interaction which can be studied via the
production channel. A first total cross section value on the reaction pp ->
ppK+K- at an excess energy of 17 MeV i.e. below the phi production threshold

Mechanism of Pion Production in p Scattering at 1 GeV/nucleon
The one-pion and two-pion production in the p(alpha, alpha prime)X reaction
at an energy of E{alpha} = 4.2 GeV has been studied by simultaneous
registration of the scattered alpha particles and the secondary pion or proton.
The obtained results demonstrate that the inelastic alpha-particle scattering
on the proton at the energy of the experiment proceeds either through
excitation and decay of Delta resonance in the projectile or through excitation
in the target proton of the Roper resonance, which decays mainly on a nucleon
and a pion or a nucleon and a sigma meson - system of two pions in the isospin

Enhancement of Threshold Cross Sections by In-Medium Final State Interactions
We address the problem of pion production in low energy -nucleus
collisions. For the production mechanism we assume a simple model consisting of
a coherent sum of single pion exchange and the excitation---followed by the
decay into two pions and a nucleon---of the resonance. The
production amplitude is modified by the final state interaction between the
pions calculated using the chirally improved J\"ulich meson exchange model
including the polarization of the nuclear medium by the pions. The model
reproduces well the experimentally observed cross
sections, especially the enhancement with increasing of the
mass distribution in the threshold region.Comment: 5 pages RevTeX, 3-eps figure
Strangeness Production in Proton-Proton Collisions Close to Threshold
Exclusive data on the reactions pp -> ppK+K- and pp -> pK+ Lambda/Sigma0 have
been taken at the cooler synchrotron COSY close to threshold. At equal excess
energies, an enhancement of the Lambda/Sigma0 ratio by one order of magnitude
has been observed compared to data at higher excess energies. New results
obtained at the COSY-11 facility explore the transition region between this
low-energy Sigma0 suppression and excess energies of 60 MeV. A first total
cross section for elementary antikaon production below the phi threshold has
been determined, two orders of magnitude smaller compared to kaon production at
