Morpholino Oligonucleotide Cross-Linked Hydrogels as Portable Optical Oligonucleotide Biosensors
© 2018 American Chemical Society. Morpholino Oligonucleotides (MOs), an uncharged DNA analogue, are functionalized with an acrylamide moiety and incorporated into polymer hydrogels as responsive cross-links for microRNA sequence detection. The MO cross-links can be selectively cleaved by a short target analyte single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) sequence based on microRNA, inducing a distinct swelling response measured optically. The MO cross-links offer significant improvement over DNA based systems through improved thermal stability, no salt requirement and 1000-fold improved sensitivity over a comparative biosensor, facilitating a wider range of sensing conditions. Analysis was also achieved using a mobile phone camera, demonstrating portability
Early infant feeding and adiposity risk: from infancy to adulthood
Introduction: Systematic reviews suggest that a longer duration of breast-feeding is associated with a reduction in the risk of later overweight and obesity. Most studies examining breast-feeding in relation to adiposity have not used longitudinal analysis. In our study, we aimed to examine early infant feeding and adiposity risk in a longitudinal cohort from birth to young adulthood using new as well as published data.
Methods: Data from the Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort (Raine) Study in Perth, W.A., Australia, were used to examine associations between breast-feeding and measures of adiposity at 1, 2, 3, 6, 8, 10, 14, 17, and 20 years.
Results: Breast-feeding was measured in a number of ways. Longer breast-feeding (in months) was associated with reductions in weight z-scores between birth and 1 year (ÎČ = -0.027; p \u3c 0.001) in the adjusted analysis. At 3 years, breast-feeding for \u3c4 months increased the odds of infants experiencing early rapid growth (OR 2.05; 95% CI 1.43-2.94; p \u3c 0.001). From 1 to 8 years, children breast-fed for â€4 months compared to â„12 months had a significantly greater probability of exceeding the 95th percentile of weight. The age at which breast-feeding was stopped and a milk other than breast milk was introduced (introduction of formula milk) played a significant role in the trajectory of the BMI from birth to 14 years; the 4-month cutoff point was consistently associated with a higher BMI trajectory. Introduction of a milk other than breast milk before 6 months compared to at 6 months or later was a risk factor for being overweight or obese at 20 years of age (OR 1.47; 95% CI 1.12-1.93; p = 0.005).
Discussion: Breast-feeding until 6 months of age and beyond should be encouraged and is recommended for protection against increased adiposity in childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood. Adverse long-term effects of early growth acceleration are fundamental in later overweight and obesity. Formula feeding stimulates a higher postnatal growth velocity, whereas breast-feeding promotes slower growth and a reduced likelihood of overweight and obesity. Biological mechanisms underlying the protective effect of breast-feeding against obesity are based on the unique composition and metabolic and physiological responses to human milk
Stability of the Black Hole Horizon and the Landau Ghost
The stability of the black hole horizon is demanded by both cosmic censorship
and the generalized second law of thermodynamics. We test the consistency of
these principles by attempting to exceed the black hole extremality condition
in various process in which a U(1) charge is added to a nearly extreme
Reissner--Nordstr\"om black hole charged with a {\it different\/} type of U(1)
charge. For an infalling spherical charged shell the attempt is foiled by the
self--Coulomb repulsion of the shell. For an infalling classical charge it
fails because the required classical charge radius exceeds the size of the
black hole. For a quantum charge the horizon is saved because in order to avoid
the Landau ghost, the effective coupling constant cannot be large enough to

QCD-like Theories at Finite Baryon and Isospin Density
We use 2-color QCD as a model to study the effects of simultaneous presence
of chemical potentials for isospin charge, , and for baryon number,
. We determine the phase diagrams for 2 and 4 flavor theories using the
method of effective chiral Lagrangians at low densities and weak coupling
perturbation theory at high densities. We determine the values of various
condensates and densities as well as the spectrum of excitations as functions
of and . A similar analysis of QCD with quarks in the adjoint
representation is also presented. Our results can be of relevance for lattice
simulations of these theories. We predict a phase of inhomogeneous condensation
(Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase) in the 2 colour 2 flavor theory, while
we do not expect it the 4 flavor case or in other realizations of QCD with a

Calorons and localization of quark eigenvectors in lattice QCD
We analyze the localization properties for eigenvectors of the Dirac operator
in quenched lattice QCD in the vicinity of the deconfinement phase transition.
Studying the characteristic differences between the Z_3 sectors above the
critical temperature T_c, we find indications for the presence of calorons.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
