Theory of Cylindrical Tubules and Helical Ribbons of Chiral Lipid Membranes

We present a general theory for the equilibrium structure of cylindrical tubules and helical ribbons of chiral lipid membranes. This theory is based on a continuum elastic free energy that permits variations in the direction of molecular tilt and in the curvature of the membrane. The theory shows that the formation of tubules and helical ribbons is driven by the chirality of the membrane. Tubules have a first-order transition from a uniform state to a helically modulated state, with periodic stripes in the tilt direction and ripples in the curvature. Helical ribbons can be stable structures, or they can be unstable intermediate states in the formation of tubules.Comment: 43 pages, including 12 postscript figures, uses REVTeX 3.0 and epsf.st

The visualisation on Pangolin scales using gelatine lifters

Recent media reports document the plight of the Pangolin and its current position as “the most trafficked mammal in the world”. They are described by some as scaly anteaters as all species are covered in hard keratinous tissue in the form of overlapping scales acting as a “flexible dermal armour”. It is estimated that between 2011 and 2013, 117,000 to 234,000 pangolins were slaughtered, but the seizures may only represent as little as 10% of the true volume of pangolins being illegally traded. In this paper, methods to visualise fingermarks on Pangolin scales using gelatine lifters is presented. The gelatine lifters provide an easy to use, inexpensive but effective method to help wildlife crime rangers across Africa and Asia to disrupt the trafficking. The gelatine lifting process visualised marks producing clear ridge detail on 52% of the Pangolin scales examined, with a further 30% showing the impression of a finger with limited ridge detail. The paper builds on an initial sociotechnical approach to establishing requirement, then it focuses on the methods and outcomes lifting fingermarks off Pangolin scales using gelatine lifters, providing an evaluation of the viability of using the lifters in practice

Analysis of two-player quantum games in an EPR setting using geometric algebra

    Get PDF
The framework for playing quantum games in an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) type setting is investigated using the mathematical formalism of Clifford geometric algebra (GA). In this setting, the players' strategy sets remain identical to the ones in the classical mixed-strategy version of the game, which is then obtained as proper subset of the corresponding quantum game. As examples, using GA we analyze the games of Prisoners' Dilemma and Stag Hunt when played in the EPR type setting.Comment: 20 pages, no figure, revise

Flt-1 (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Receptor-1) Is Essential for the Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor-Notch Feedback Loop During Angiogenesis

OBJECTIVE: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) signaling induces Notch signaling during angiogenesis. Flt-1/VEGF receptor-1 negatively modulates VEGF signaling. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that disrupted Flt-1 regulation of VEGF signaling causes Notch pathway defects that contribute to dysmorphogenesis of Flt-1 mutant vessels. APPROACH AND RESULTS: Wild-type and flt-1(-/-) mouse embryonic stem cell-derived vessels were exposed to pharmacological and protein-based Notch inhibitors with and without added VEGF. Vessel morphology, endothelial cell proliferation, and Notch target gene expression levels were assessed. Similar pathway manipulations were performed in developing vessels of zebrafish embryos. Notch inhibition reduced flt-1(-/-) embryonic stem cell-derived vessel branching dysmorphogenesis and endothelial hyperproliferation, and rescue of flt-1(-/-) vessels was accompanied by a reduction in elevated Notch targets. Surprisingly, wild-type vessel morphogenesis and proliferation were unaffected by Notch suppression, Notch targets in wild-type endothelium were unchanged, and Notch suppression perturbed zebrafish intersegmental vessels but not caudal vein plexuses. In contrast, exogenous VEGF caused wild-type embryonic stem cell-derived vessel and zebrafish intersegmental vessel dysmorphogenesis that was rescued by Notch blockade. CONCLUSIONS: Elevated Notch signaling downstream of perturbed VEGF signaling contributes to aberrant flt-1(-/-) blood vessel formation. Notch signaling may be dispensable for blood vessel formation when VEGF signaling is below a critical threshold

Multicenter cohort study, with a nested randomized comparison, to examine the cardiovascular impact of preterm preeclampsia

This study evaluated whether planned early delivery would ameliorate cardiovascular dysfunction six months postpartum, compared to usual care with expectant management, in women with late preterm preeclampsia. We conducted a mechanistic observational study in women with preterm preeclampsia between 34+0 and 36+6 weeks’ gestation, nested within a randomised controlled trial of planned early delivery versus expectant management (usual care), in 28 maternity hospitals in England and Wales. Women were followed up six months postpartum with cardiovascular assessments. The primary outcome was a composite of systolic and/or diastolic dysfunction (by 2009 and 2016 definitions of diastolic dysfunction). Between 27 April 2016 and 30 November 2018, 623 women were found to be eligible, of whom 420 (67%) were recruited. 133 women were randomised to planned delivery, 137 women were randomised to expectant management within the trial, while 150 women received expectant management outside of the trial. 321 (76.4%) completed their six month echocardiography assessment. 10% (31/321) had a left ventricular ejection fraction <55% whilst 71% (229/321) remained hypertensive. There were no differences in the primary outcome between the two randomised groups (planned delivery versus expectant management) using either the 2009 (RR 1.06; 95% CI 0.80, 1.40) or 2016 definitions (RR 0.78; 0.33, 1.86). In conclusion, we demonstrated that late preterm preeclampsia results in persistence of hypertension in the majority, and systolic LV dysfunction in 10%, of women six months postpartum. Planned early delivery does not affect these outcomes. Preeclampsia is not a self-limiting disease of pregnancy alone

Analyzing three-player quantum games in an EPR type setup

We use the formalism of Clifford Geometric Algebra (GA) to develop an analysis of quantum versions of three-player non-cooperative games. The quantum games we explore are played in an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) type setting. In this setting, the players' strategy sets remain identical to the ones in the mixed-strategy version of the classical game that is obtained as a proper subset of the corresponding quantum game. Using GA we investigate the outcome of a realization of the game by players sharing GHZ state, W state, and a mixture of GHZ and W states. As a specific example, we study the game of three-player Prisoners' Dilemma.Comment: 21 pages, 3 figure
