Faint star counts in the near-infrared
We discuss near-infrared star counts at the Galactic pole with a view to
guiding the NGST and ground-based NIR cameras. Star counts from deep K-band
images from the CFHT are presented, and compared with results from the 2MASS
survey and some Galaxy models. With appropriate corrections for detector
artifacts and galaxies, the data agree with the models down to K~18, but
indicate a larger population of fainter red stars. There is also a significant
population of compact galaxies that extend to the observational faint limit of
K=20.5. Recent Galaxy models agree well down to K19, but diverge at

RoboJam: A Musical Mixture Density Network for Collaborative Touchscreen Interaction
RoboJam is a machine-learning system for generating music that assists users
of a touchscreen music app by performing responses to their short
improvisations. This system uses a recurrent artificial neural network to
generate sequences of touchscreen interactions and absolute timings, rather
than high-level musical notes. To accomplish this, RoboJam's network uses a
mixture density layer to predict appropriate touch interaction locations in
space and time. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of
RoboJam's network and how it has been integrated into a touchscreen music app.
A preliminary evaluation analyses the system in terms of training, musical
generation and user interaction
Algebraic Torsion in Contact Manifolds
We extract a nonnegative integer-valued invariant, which we call the "order
of algebraic torsion", from the Symplectic Field Theory of a closed contact
manifold, and show that its finiteness gives obstructions to the existence of
symplectic fillings and exact symplectic cobordisms. A contact manifold has
algebraic torsion of order zero if and only if it is algebraically overtwisted
(i.e. has trivial contact homology), and any contact 3-manifold with positive
Giroux torsion has algebraic torsion of order one (though the converse is not
true). We also construct examples for each nonnegative k of contact 3-manifolds
that have algebraic torsion of order k but not k - 1, and derive consequences
for contact surgeries on such manifolds. The appendix by Michael Hutchings
gives an alternative proof of our cobordism obstructions in dimension three

Low temperature specific heat and possible gap to magnetic excitations in the Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd2Sn207
The Gd2Sn2O7 pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet displays a phase
transition to a four sublattice Neel ordered state at a temperature near 1 K.
Despite the seemingly conventional nature of the ordered state, the specific
heat has been found to be described in the temperature range 350-800 mK by an
anomalous T-squared power law. A similar temperature dependence has also been
reported for Gd2Ti2O7, another pyrochlore Heisenberg material. Such anomalous
T-squared behavior in Cv has been argued to be correlated to an unusual
energy-dependence of the density of states which also seemingly manifests
itself in low-temperature spin fluctuations found in muon spin relaxation
experiments. In this paper, we report calculations of Cv that consider spin
wave like excitations out of the Neel order observed in Gd2Sn2O7 and argue that
the parametric T-squared behavior does not reflect the true low-energy
excitations of Gd2Sn2O7. Rather, we find that the low-energy excitations of
this material are antiferromagnetic magnons gapped by single-ion and dipolar
anisotropy effects, and that the lowest temperature of 350 mK considered in
previous specific heat measurements accidentally happens to coincide with a
crossover temperature below which magnons become thermally activated and Cv
takes an exponential form. We argue that further specific heat measurements
that extend down to at least 100 mK are required in order to ascribe an
unconventional description of magnetic excitations out of the ground state of
Gd2Sn2O7 or to invalidate the standard picture of gapped excitations proposed

FUSE Spectra of the Black Hole Binary LMC X-3
Far-ultraviolet spectra of LMC X-3 were taken covering photometric phases
0.47 to 0.74 in the 1.7-day orbital period of the black-hole binary (phase zero
being superior conjunction of the X-ray source). The continuum is faint and
flat, but appears to vary significantly during the observations. Concurrent
RXTE/ASM observations show the system was in its most luminous X-ray state
during the FUSE observations. The FUV spectrum contains strong terrestrial
airglow emission lines, while the only stellar lines clearly present are
emissions from the O VI resonance doublet. Their flux does not change
significantly during the FUSE observations. These lines are modelled as two
asymmetrical profiles, including the local ISM absorptions due to C II and
possibly O VI. Velocity variations of O VI emission are consistent with the
orbital velocity of the black hole and provide a new constraint on its mass.Comment: 12 pages including 1 table, 4 diagrams To appear in A
Measurement properties of the UK-English version of the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventoryâ„¢ 4.0 (PedsQLâ„¢) generic core scales
Background
Health related quality of life (HRQL) has been recognised as an important paediatric outcome measurement. One of the more promising measures to emerge in recent years is the Pediatric Quality Of Life Inventory (PedsQLâ„¢), developed in the US. Advantages of the PedsQLâ„¢ include brevity, availability of age appropriate versions and parallel forms for child and parent. This study developed a UK-English version of PedsQLâ„¢ generic module and assessed its performance in a group of UK children and their parents.
Methods
PedsQLâ„¢ was translated to UK-English. The psychometric properties of the UK version were then tested following administration to 1399 children and 970 of their parents. The sample included healthy children, children diagnosed with asthma, diabetes or inflammatory bowel disease and children in remission from cancer.
Results
Psychometric properties were similar to those reported for the original PedsQLâ„¢. Internal reliability exceeded 0.70 for all proxy and self-report sub-scales. Discriminant validity was established for proxy and self-report with higher HRQL being reported for healthy children than those with health problems. Sex differences were noted on the emotional functioning subscale, with females reporting lower HRQL than males. Proxy and self-report correlation was higher for children with health problems than for healthy children.
Conclusion
The UK-English version of PedsQLâ„¢ performed as well as the original PedsQLâ„¢ and is recommended for assessment of paediatric HRQL in the UK
NMR analysis of Nile Blue (C. I. Basic Blue 12) and Thionine (C. I. 52000) in solution
The dyes Nile Blue (C. I. Basic Blue 12, NB) and Thionine (C. I. 52000, TH) were examined in both ionic and neutral forms in different solvents using NMR and UV-visible Spectroscopy to firmly establish the structures of the molecules and to assess the nature and extent of their aggregating characteristics. 1H and 13C NMR assignments and chemical shift data were used along with (for NB) nuclear Overhauser effect information enabling a structure for self-assembly to be proposed. In both cases these data were supplemented with variable temperature, dilution and diffusion-based experimental results using 1H NMR spectroscopy thereby enabling the extended aggregate structures to be assessed in terms of the relative strength of self-association and the extent to which extended aggregates could form. Full and detailed solution phase NMR analysis of such dyes, especially the two studied in this context, have either not been widely reported or have not been studied to the depth presented here. The data and their interpretation form an important addition to the analysis of this class of dye compounds and provide additional insight into the effects of self-assembly on the behaviour of such molecules in various solution-phase environments
