    Large eddy simulation of incompressible turbulent channel flow

    The three-dimensional, time-dependent primitive equations of motion were numerically integrated for the case of turbulent channel flow. A partially implicit numerical method was developed. An important feature of this scheme is that the equation of continuity is solved directly. The residual field motions were simulated through an eddy viscosity model, while the large-scale field was obtained directly from the solution of the governing equations. An important portion of the initial velocity field was obtained from the solution of the linearized Navier-Stokes equations. The pseudospectral method was used for numerical differentiation in the horizontal directions, and second-order finite-difference schemes were used in the direction normal to the walls. The large eddy simulation technique is capable of reproducing some of the important features of wall-bounded turbulent flows. The resolvable portions of the root-mean square wall pressure fluctuations, pressure velocity-gradient correlations, and velocity pressure-gradient correlations are documented

    In National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius, the Supreme Court found that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act-popularly known as Obamacare -was an unconstitutional assertion of Congress\u27 power to regulate commerce among the several states, but was nonetheless sustainable under Congress\u27 power to tax. This piece looks at some possible meanings and implications of the Supreme Court\u27s decision. Takes One and Two analogize Sebelius and two other famous cases-Marbury v. Madison and Regents of the University of California v. Bakke-whose opinions are held out as deftly straddling the line between principle and prudence.     Fully-Coupled Simulation of Cosmic Reionization. I: Numerical Methods and Tests

    We describe an extension of the Enzo code to enable fully-coupled radiation hydrodynamical simulation of inhomogeneous reionization in large (100Mpc)3\sim (100 Mpc)^3 cosmological volumes with thousands to millions of point sources. We solve all dynamical, radiative transfer, thermal, and ionization processes self-consistently on the same mesh, as opposed to a postprocessing approach which coarse-grains the radiative transfer. We do, however, employ a simple subgrid model for star formation which we calibrate to observations. Radiation transport is done in the grey flux-limited diffusion (FLD) approximation, which is solved by implicit time integration split off from the gas energy and ionization equations, which are solved separately. This results in a faster and more robust scheme for cosmological applications compared to the earlier method. The FLD equation is solved using the hypre optimally scalable geometric multigrid solver from LLNL. By treating the ionizing radiation as a grid field as opposed to rays, our method is scalable with respect to the number of ionizing sources, limited only by the parallel scaling properties of the radiation solver. We test the speed and accuracy of our approach on a number of standard verification and validation tests. We show by direct comparison with Enzo's adaptive ray tracing method Moray that the well-known inability of FLD to cast a shadow behind opaque clouds has a minor effect on the evolution of ionized volume and mass fractions in a reionization simulation validation test. We illustrate an application of our method to the problem of inhomogeneous reionization in a 80 Mpc comoving box resolved with 320033200^3 Eulerian grid cells and dark matter particles.Comment: 32 pages, 23 figures.     Retconning Heller: Five Takes on New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen

    New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen was the first significant Second Amendment case that the Supreme Court had heard in nearly fifteen years since its decision in District of Columbia v. Heller. This Article offers some preliminary observations about the opinion itself, as well as its likely effects, some of which are starting to manifest. Our first take concerns the question of opinion assignment. Why did Chief Justice Roberts—whose support for the Second Amendment has been suspect—assign the opinion to Justice Thomas? Takes Two and Three concern Justice Thomas’s substitution of text, history, and tradition for tiered security, and his call for courts to adopt analogical reasoning should the former fail to provide answers to resolve particular cases. In rejecting tiered scrutiny, Thomas argued that the lower courts had misread the Heller decision itself; that Heller rejected tiered security in favor of a textual, historical, and traditional inquiry. To make Bruen seem less like an abrupt departure, we argue, Justice Thomas had to “retcon” Heller—reading back into the latter decision the analytical framework adopted in Bruen. We also question how helpful his explanation of the method for analogizing to other extant gun regulations when history and tradition have run out is likely to be to lower courts who must rehear cases involving dozens of these laws in light of Bruen’s new standard. Take Four wonders about the status of what we earlier termed “the Heller safe harbor”—the list of “presumptively lawful” regulations that the Court said were not called into question by the decision. Critics at the time questioned whether these could be squared with the self-conscious originalism of the rest of the opinion. This tension is only heightened by Bruen’s text-history-tradition only approach. Finally, we look at the reaction of the lower courts post-Bruen. While approaches differ, a surprising number of these opinions seem to recognize Bruen for the sea change it portends and are attempting to implement it in good faith. Although, as was true with cases like United States v. Lopez and Heller itself, some courts are also trying to avoid the wider implications of Bruen using any available argument, however specious, and we detect in some an “uncivil obedience” intended to raise the Supreme Court’s costs of holding the line laid down in Bruen

    Is Thermal Expansion Driving the Initial Gas Ejection in NGC 6251?

    In this paper, we explore the possibility that the radiative properties of the most compact region in NGC 6251* may be understood in the same sense as Sgr A*, though with some telling differences that may hint at the nature of jet formation. We show that observations of this object with ASCA, ROSAT, HST and VLBI together may be hinting at a picture in which Bondi-Hoyle accretion from an ambient ionized medium feeds a standard disk accreting at ~ 4.0*10^{22} g s^{-1}. Somewhere near the event horizon, this plasma is heated to >10^{11} K, where it radiates via thermal synchrotron (producing a radio component) and self-Comptonization (accounting for a nonthermal X-ray flux). This temperature is much greater than its virial value and the hot cloud expands at roughly the sound speed (~0.1c), after which it begins to accelerate on a parsec scale to relativistic velocities. In earlier work, the emission from the extended jet has been modeled successfully using nonthermal synchrotron self-Compton processes, with a self-absorbed inner core. In the picture we are developing here, the initial ejection of matter is associated with a self-absorbed thermal radio component that dominates the core emission on the smallest scales. The nonthermal particle distributions responsible for the emission in the extended jet are then presumably energized, e.g., via shock acceleration, within the expanding, hot gas. The power associated with this plasma represents an accretion efficiency of about 0.54, requiring dissipation in a prograde disk around a rapidly spinning black hole (with spin parameter a~1).Comment: 17 pages, 1 figures, to appear in Ap
