We report on measurements of the extinction in the U, B & V bands and of the NSB (Night Sky Background) during 2 dark periods on La Silla Observatory and at 4000-5000m on the ALMA site using an UV optimized 25 cm portable telescope.Comment: 9 pages, 15 figure

Proton fraction in the inner neutron-star crust

Monte Carlo simulations of neutron-rich matter of relevance to the inner neutron-star crust are performed for a system of A=5,000 nucleons. To determine the proton fraction in the inner crust, numerical simulations are carried out for a variety of densities and proton fractions. We conclude---as others have before us using different techniques---that the proton fraction in the inner stellar crust is very small. Given that the purported "nuclear pasta" phase in stellar crusts develops as a consequence of the long-range Coulomb interaction among protons, we question whether pasta formation is possible in such proton-poor environments. To answer this question, we search for physical observables sensitive to the transition between spherical nuclei and exotic pasta structures. Of particular relevance is the static structure factor S(k)---an observable sensitive to density fluctuations. However, no dramatic behavior was observed in S(k). We regard the identification of physical observables sensitive to the existence---or lack-thereof---of a pasta phase in proton-poor environments as an open problem of critical importance.Comment: 24 pages and 7 figure

Fermion Pairing Dynamics in the Relativistic Scalar Plasma

Using many-body techniques we obtain the time-dependent Gaussian approximation for interacting fermion-scalar field models. This method is applied to an uniform system of relativistic spin-1/2 fermion field coupled, through a Yukawa term, to a scalar field in 3+1 dimensions, the so-called quantum scalar plasma model. The renormalization for the resulting Gaussian mean-field equations, both static and dynamical, are examined and initial conditions discussed. We also investigate solutions for the gap equation and show that the energy density has a single minimum.Comment: 21 pages, latex, 4 postscript figures, new sections, some literary changes, notation corrections, accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract --The effect of contact angle hysteresis on the relative permeability of gas and condensate is studied with a mechanistic pore-level model of retrograde condensation in three dimensional pore networks under gravitational forces. We examine the effects of changing the wettability of the fluid-solid system from strongly liquid-wet to intermediate gaswet

Surgical approach to medullary thyroid carcinoma associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2

We briefly review the surgical approaches to medullary thyroid carcinoma associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (medullary thyroid carcinoma/multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2). The recommended surgical approaches are usually based on the age of the affected carrier/patient, tumor staging and the specific rearranged during transfection codon mutation. We have focused mainly on young children with no apparent disease who are carrying a germline rearranged during transfection mutation. Successful management of medullary thyroid carcinoma in these cases depends on early diagnosis and treatment. Total thyroidectomy should be performed before 6 months of age in infants carrying the rearranged during transfection 918 codon mutation, by the age of 3 years in rearranged during transfection 634 mutation carriers, at 5 years of age in carriers with level 3 risk rearranged during transfection mutations, and by the age of 10 years in level 4 risk rearranged during transfection mutations. Patients with thyroid tumor >5 mm detected by ultrasound, and basal calcitonin levels >40 pg/ml, frequently have cervical and upper mediastinal lymph node metastasis. In the latter patients, total thyroidectomy should be complemented by extensive lymph node dissection. Also, we briefly review our data from a large familial medullary thyroid carcinoma genealogy harboring a germline rearranged during transfection Cys620Arg mutation. All 14 screened carriers of the rearranged during transfection Cys620Arg mutation who underwent total thyroidectomy before the age of 12 years presented persistently undetectable serum levels of calcitonin (<2 pg/ml) during the follow-up period of 2–6 years. Although it is recommended that preventive total thyroidectomy in rearranged during transfection codon 620 mutation carriers is performed before the age of 5 years, in this particular family the surgical intervention performed before the age of 12 years led to an apparent biochemical cure

Laccase activation in deep eutectic solvents

The research on alternative solvents and co-solvents is a relevant aspect when envisioning the improvement of biocatalytic reactions. Among these solvents and co-solvents, deep eutectic solvents (DES) may be considered as customizable new reaction media for biocatalysis. Accordingly, in this work, sixteen DES aqueous solutions, as well as of the individual DES components at the same conditions have been investigated in laccase-catalyzed reactions. Cholinium- and betaine-based DES formed with polyols at different molar ratio and concentrations were evaluated. The results reported show that in presence of most DES the laccase activity is preserved and, with a particular DES, enhanced up to 200%. Molecular docking studies demonstrated that while most DES components establish hydrogen-bonds with the enzyme amino acids, those that establish stronger interactions with the enzyme (expressed by absolute values of docking affinity energies) lead to an enhanced laccase activity. Finally, the laccase stability was evaluated in additional tests under extreme storage temperatures (60 ºC and -80 ºC). Although no significant protection to high temperatures was afforded by DES, an enhanced laccase activity when stored at low temperatures was found, at least up to 20 days. Combining experimental results and molecular docking this work shows that DES can be designed as co-solvents to improve biocatalytic reactions. This work was developed within the scope of the project CICECO-Aveiro Institute of Materials, FCT Ref.
