Martian impact basins: Morphology differences and tectonic provinces
Detailed geomorphic and structural mapping of five Martian basins and preliminary study of eleven other basins reveal four characteristic styles of modification that relate to the degree and age of past tectonic activity. Within regions that exhibit no evidence for tectonic activity, the modification style can be used to distinguish areas dominated by different exogenic processes. A framework for understanding these different styles of basin modification is provided
Quantum Transport through Nanostructures with Orbital Degeneracies
Geometric symmetries cause orbital degeneracies in a molecule's spectrum. In
a single-molecule junction, these degeneracies are lifted by various
symmetry-breaking effects. We study quantum transport through such
nanostructures with an almost degenerate spectrum. We show that the master
equation for the reduced density matrix must be derived within the
singular-coupling limit as opposed to the conventional weak-coupling limit.
This results in signatures of the density matrix's off-diagonal elements in the
transport characteristics
State education as high-yield investment: human capital theory in European policy discourse
Human Capital Theory has been an increasingly important phenomenon in economic thought over the last 50 years. The central role it affords to education has become even more marked in recent years as the concept of the ‘knowledge economy’ has become a global concern. In this paper, the prevalence of Human Capital Theory within European educational policy discourse is explored. The paper examines a selection of policy documents from a number of disparate European national contexts and considers the extent to which the ideas of Human Capital Theory can be seen to be influential. In the second part of the paper, the implications of Human Capital Theory for education are considered, with a particular focus on the possible ramifications at a time of economic austerity. The paper argues that Human Capital Theory risks offering a diminished view of the person, a diminished view of education, but that with its sole focus on economic goals leaves room for educationists and others to argue for the educational, social, and moral values it ignores, and for the conception of the good life and good society it fails to mention
Quantum transport through single-molecule junctions with orbital degeneracies
We consider electronic transport through a single-molecule junction where the
molecule has a degenerate spectrum. Unlike previous transport models, and
theories a rate-equations description is no longer possible, and the quantum
coherences between degenerate states have to be taken into account. We present
the derivation and application of a master equation that describes the system
in the weak-coupling limit and give an in-depth discussion of the parameter
regimes and the new phenomena due to coherent on-site dynamics
A 'p-n' diode with hole and electron-doped lanthanum manganite
The hole-doped manganite La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 and the electron-doped manganite
La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 undergo an insulator to metal transition at around 250 K, above
which both behave as a polaronic semiconductor. We have successfully fabricated
an epitaxial trilayer (La0.7Ca0.3MnO3/SrTiO3/La0.7Ce0.3MnO3), where SrTiO3 is
an insulator. At room temperature, i.e. in the semiconducting regime, it
exhibits asymmetric current-voltage (I-V) characteristics akin to a p-n diode.
The observed asymmetry in the I-V characteristics disappears at low
temperatures where both the manganite layers are metallic. To the best of our
knowledge, this is the first report of such a p-n diode, using the polaronic
semiconducting regime of doped manganites.Comment: PostScript text and 2 figures, to be published in Appl. Phys. Lett
Rotational quenching rate coefficients for H_2 in collisions with H_2 from 2 to 10,000 K
Rate coefficients for rotational transitions in H_2 induced by H_2 impact are
presented. Extensive quantum mechanical coupled-channel calculations based on a
recently published (H_2)_2 potential energy surface were performed. The
potential energy surface used here is presumed to be more reliable than
surfaces used in previous work. Rotational transition cross sections with
initial levels J <= 8 were computed for collision energies ranging between
0.0001 and 2.5 eV, and the corresponding rate coefficients were calculated for
the temperature range 2 < T <10,000 K. In general, agreement with earlier
calculations, which were limited to 100-6000 K, is good though discrepancies
are found at the lowest and highest temperatures. Low-density-limit cooling
functions due to para- and ortho-H_2 collisions are obtained from the
collisional rate coefficients. Implications of the new results for non-thermal
H_2 rotational distributions in molecular regions are also investigated
Maintaining Legitimacy: Controversies, Orders of Worth and Public Justifications
We build on Boltanski and Thévenot's theory of justification to account for the ways in which different stakeholder groups actively engage with discourses and objects to maintain the legitimacy of institutions that are relevant to their activity. We use this framework to analyse a controversy emerging from a nuclear accident which involved a large European energy company and sparked public debate on the legitimacy of nuclear power. Based on the findings, we elaborate a process model of institutional repair that explains the role of agents and the structural constraints they face in attempting to maintain legitimacy. The model enhances institutional understandings of legitimacy maintenance in three main respects: it proposes a view of legitimacy maintenance as a controversy-based process progressing through stakeholders' justifications vis-à-vis a public audience; it demonstrates the role of meta-level 'orders of worth' as multiple modalities for agreement which shape stakeholders' public justifications during controversies; and it highlights the capacities that stakeholders deploy in developing robust justifications out of a plurality of forms of agreement. © 2011 The Authors.
