Changes in Pasture Growth Rate Due to Fertiliser and Grazing Management
It is imperative that sheep production systems in southern Australia continue to be refined so producers remain financially viable but at the same time the environment is not degraded. As part of a national thrust for development and promotion of better production systems, one research site has been established in Victoria where pastures and animal production are measured together with water and nutrient movement. Results for pasture growth rates over two years are presented here and will be used to develop best industry practice at completion of the project
Collisions of micron-sized, charged water droplets in still air
We investigate the effect of electrical charge on collisions of
hydrodynamically interacting, micron-sized water droplets settling through
quiescent air. The relative dynamics of charged droplets is determined by
hydrodynamic interactions, particle and fluid inertia, and electrostatic
forces. We analyse the resulting relative dynamics of oppositely charged
droplets by determining its fixed points and their stable and unstable
manifolds. The stable manifold of a saddle point forms a separatrix that
separates colliding trajectories from those that do not collide. The
qualitative conclusions from this theory are in excellent agreement with

Effector memory differentiation increases detection of replication-competent HIV-l in resting CD4+ T cells from virally suppressed individuals.
Studies have demonstrated that intensive ART alone is not capable of eradicating HIV-1, as the virus rebounds within a few weeks upon treatment interruption. Viral rebound may be induced from several cellular subsets; however, the majority of proviral DNA has been found in antigen experienced resting CD4+ T cells. To achieve a cure for HIV-1, eradication strategies depend upon both understanding mechanisms that drive HIV-1 persistence as well as sensitive assays to measure the frequency of infected cells after therapeutic interventions. Assays such as the quantitative viral outgrowth assay (QVOA) measure HIV-1 persistence during ART by ex vivo activation of resting CD4+ T cells to induce latency reversal; however, recent studies have shown that only a fraction of replication-competent viruses are inducible by primary mitogen stimulation. Previous studies have shown a correlation between the acquisition of effector memory phenotype and HIV-1 latency reversal in quiescent CD4+ T cell subsets that harbor the reservoir. Here, we apply our mechanistic understanding that differentiation into effector memory CD4+ T cells more effectively promotes HIV-1 latency reversal to significantly improve proviral measurements in the QVOA, termed differentiation QVOA (dQVOA), which reveals a significantly higher frequency of the inducible HIV-1 replication-competent reservoir in resting CD4+ T cells
Precise Asymptotics for a Random Walker's Maximum
We consider a discrete time random walk in one dimension. At each time step
the walker jumps by a random distance, independent from step to step, drawn
from an arbitrary symmetric density function. We show that the expected
positive maximum E[M_n] of the walk up to n steps behaves asymptotically for
large n as, E[M_n]/\sigma=\sqrt{2n/\pi}+ \gamma +O(n^{-1/2}), where \sigma^2 is
the variance of the step lengths. While the leading \sqrt{n} behavior is
universal and easy to derive, the leading correction term turns out to be a
nontrivial constant \gamma. For the special case of uniform distribution over
[-1,1], Coffmann et. al. recently computed \gamma=-0.516068...by exactly
enumerating a lengthy double series. Here we present a closed exact formula for
\gamma valid for arbitrary symmetric distributions. We also demonstrate how
\gamma appears in the thermodynamic limit as the leading behavior of the
difference variable E[M_n]-E[|x_n|] where x_n is the position of the walker
after n steps. An application of these results to the equilibrium
thermodynamics of a Rouse polymer chain is pointed out. We also generalize our

Phonon drag thermopower and weak localization
Previous experimental work on a two-dimensional (2D) electron gas in a
Si-on-sapphire device led to the conclusion that both conductivity and phonon
drag thermopower are affected to the same relative extent by weak
localization. The present paper presents further experimental and theoretical
results on these transport coefficients for two very low mobility 2D electron
gases in doped GaAs/GaAlAs quantum wells. The experiments
were carried out in the temperature range 3-7K where phonon drag dominates the
thermopower and, contrary to the previous work, the changes observed in the
thermopower due to weak localization were found to be an order of magnitude
less than those in the conductivity. A theoretical framework for phonon drag
thermopower in 2D and 3D semiconductors is presented which accounts for this
insensitivity of to weak localization. It also provides transparent

Genome-wide associations for milk production and somatic cell score in Holstein-Friesian cattle in Ireland
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Contemporary dairy breeding goals have broadened to include, along with milk production traits, a number of non-production-related traits in an effort to improve the overall functionality of the dairy cow. Increased indirect selection for resistance to mastitis, one of the most important production-related diseases in the dairy sector, via selection for reduced somatic cell count has been part of these broadened goals. A number of genome-wide association studies have identified genetic variants associated with milk production traits and mastitis resistance, however the majority of these studies have been based on animals which were predominantly kept in confinement and fed a concentrate-based diet (i.e. high-input production systems). This genome-wide association study aims to detect associations using genotypic and phenotypic data from Irish Holstein-Friesian cattle fed predominantly grazed grass in a pasture-based production system (low-input).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Significant associations were detected for milk yield, fat yield, protein yield, fat percentage, protein percentage and somatic cell score using separate single-locus, frequentist and multi-locus, Bayesian approaches. These associations were detected using two separate populations of Holstein-Friesian sires and cows. In total, 1,529 and 37 associations were detected in the sires using a single SNP regression and a Bayesian method, respectively. There were 103 associations in common between the sires and cows across all the traits. As well as detecting associations within known QTL regions, a number of novel associations were detected; the most notable of these was a region of chromosome 13 associated with milk yield in the population of Holstein-Friesian sires.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>A total of 276 of novel SNPs were detected in the sires using a single SNP regression approach. Although obvious candidate genes may not be initially forthcoming, this study provides a preliminary framework upon which to identify the causal mechanisms underlying the various milk production traits and somatic cell score. Consequently this will deepen our understanding of how these traits are expressed.</p
VR/AR and hearing research: current examples and future challenges
A well-known issue in clinical audiology and hearing research is the level of abstraction of traditional experimental assessments and methods, which lack ecological validity and differ significantly from real-life experiences, often resulting in unreliable outcomes. Attempts to deal with this matter by, for example, performing experiments in real-life contexts, can be problematic due to the difficulty of accurately identifying control-specific parameters and events. Virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) have the potential to provide dynamic and immersive audiovisual experiences that are at the same time realistic and highly controllable. Several successful attempts have been made to create and validate VR-based implementations of standard audiological and linguistic tests, as well as to design procedures and technologies to assess meaningful and ecologically-valid data. Similarly, new viewpoints on auditory perception have been provided by looking at hearing training and auditory sensory augmentation, aiming at improving perceptual skills in tasks such as speech understanding and sound-source localisation. In this contribution, we bring together researchers active in this domain. We briefly describe experiments they have designed, and jointly identify challenges that are still open and common approaches to tackle the
Quality management in heavy duty manufacturing industry: TQM vs. Six Sigma
âIs TQM a management fad?â This question has been extensively documented in the quality management literature; and will be tackled in this research though a critical literature review on the area. âTQM versus Six-Sigmaâ debate, which has also been a fundamental challenge in this research filed, is addressed by a thematic and chronological review on the peer papers. To evaluate this challenge in practice, a primary research in heavy duty machinery production industry have been conducted using a case-study on, J C Bamford Excavators Ltd (JCB), the largest European construction machinery producer. The result highlights that TQM is a natural foundation to build up Six-Sigma upon; and not surprisingly the quality yield in a TQM approach complemented by Six-sigma is far higher and more stable than when TQM with no Six-Sigma focus is being put in place; thus presenting the overall finding that TQM and Six Sigma are compliments, not substitutes. The study will be concluded with an overview on quality management approaches in the heavy duty manufacturing industry to highlight the way forward for the industry
