    Persistent-Current Experiments on Superfluid 3He-B and 3He-A

    Get PDF
We have investigated persistent flow of superfluid 3He with an ac gyroscope filled with 20-ÎŒm powder. In 3He-B, currents circulate undiminished for 48 h at least; this implies a viscosity 12 orders of magnitude lower than in the normal fluid. In 3He-A, the current does not persist. The observed critical velocity in 3He-B at P12 bars there are two regimes in the B phase: For example, at 29.3 bars the ultimate critical velocities are 5.4 and 7.8 mm/s, respectively.Peer reviewe

Magnetic Vortices in Rotating Superfluid 3He-B

    Get PDF
Rotating superfluid 3He-B is found to possess a new contribution to the NMR frequency shift, which changes sign on reversal of either the angular velocity of rotation or the magnetic field. For p=29.3 bars this gyromagnetic effect shows a discontinuity in magnitude at the first-order phase-transition temperature T/Tc=0.6, at which a change in the vortex-core structure takes place. These observations support the conclusion that the vortex core possesses a spontaneous intrinsic magnetization.Peer reviewe

Exact solution of the Zeeman effect in single-electron systems

Contrary to popular belief, the Zeeman effect can be treated exactly in single-electron systems, for arbitrary magnetic field strengths, as long as the term quadratic in the magnetic field can be ignored. These formulas were actually derived already around 1927 by Darwin, using the classical picture of angular momentum, and presented in their proper quantum-mechanical form in 1933 by Bethe, although without any proof. The expressions have since been more or less lost from the literature; instead, the conventional treatment nowadays is to present only the approximations for weak and strong fields, respectively. However, in fusion research and other plasma physics applications, the magnetic fields applied to control the shape and position of the plasma span the entire region from weak to strong fields, and there is a need for a unified treatment. In this paper we present the detailed quantum-mechanical derivation of the exact eigenenergies and eigenstates of hydrogen-like atoms and ions in a static magnetic field. Notably, these formulas are not much more complicated than the better-known approximations. Moreover, the derivation allows the value of the electron spin gyromagnetic ratio gsg_s to be different from 2. For completeness, we then review the details of dipole transitions between two hydrogenic levels, and calculate the corresponding Zeeman spectrum. The various approximations made in the derivation are also discussed in details.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures. Submitted to Physica Script

Phase Diagram of the First-Order Vortex-Core Transition in Superfluid 3He-B

The phase diagram of quantized vortices in 3He-B has been obtained with two techniques. Our NMR measurements show that magnetization displays a pressure-dependent first-order phase change at TV(P). Our gyroscopic experiments reveal a transition curve TG(P) which marks an abrupt change in the critical velocity. Both curves show a weak magnetic field dependence, run similarly in the (P, T) plane, and seem to mark the same vortex-core transition.Peer reviewe

Perinatal asphyxia: CNS development and deficits with delayed onset

    Get PDF
Perinatal asphyxia constitutes a prototype of obstetric complications occurring when pulmonary oxygenation is delayed or interrupted. The primary insult relates to the duration of the period lacking oxygenation, leading to death if not re-established. Re-oxygenation leads to a secondary insult, related to a cascade of biochemical events required for restoring proper function. Perinatal asphyxia interferes with neonatal development, resulting in long-term deficits associated to mental and neurological diseases with delayed clinical onset, by mechanisms not yet clarified. In the experimental scenario, the effects observed long after perinatal asphyxia have been explained by over expression of sentinel proteins, such as poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1), competing for NAD+ during re-oxygenation, leading to the idea that sentinel protein inhibition constitutes a suitable therapeutic strategy. Asphyxia induces transcriptional activation of proinflammatory factors, in tandem with PARP-1 overactivation, and pharmacologically induced PARP-1 inhibition also down-regulates the expression of proinflammatory cytokines. Nicotinamide has been proposed as a suitable PARP-1 inhibitor. Its effect has been studied in an experimental model of global hypoxia in rats. In that model, the insult is induced by immersing rat foetuses into a water bath for various periods of time. Following asphyxia, the pups are delivered, treated, and nursed by surrogate dams, pending further experiments. Nicotinamide rapidly distributes into the brain following systemic administration, reaching steady state concentrations sufficient to inhibit PARP-1 activity for several hours, preventing several of the long-term consequences of perinatal asphyxia, supporting the idea that it constitutes a lead for exploring compounds with similar or better pharmacological profiles

The ground state of the carbon atom in strong magnetic fields

The ground and a few excited states of the carbon atom in external uniform magnetic fields are calculated by means of our 2D mesh Hartree-Fock method for field strengths ranging from zero up to 2.35 10^9 T. With increasing field strength the ground state undergoes six transitions involving seven different electronic configurations which belong to three groups with different spin projections S_z=-1,-2,-3. For weak fields the ground state configuration arises from the field-free 1s^2 2s^2 2p_0 2p_{-1}, S_z=-1 configuration. With increasing field strength the ground state involves the four S_z=-2 configurations 1s^22s2p_0 2p_{-1}2p_{+1}, 1s^22s2p_0 2p_{-1}3d_{-2}, 1s^22p_0 2p_{-1}3d_{-2}4f_{-3} and 1s^22p_{-1}3d_{-2}4f_{-3}5g_{-4}, followed by the two fully spin polarized S_z=-3 configurations 1s2p_02p_{-1}3d_{-2}4f_{-3}5g_{-4} and 1s2p_{-1}3d_{-2}4f_{-3}5g_{-4}6h_{-5}. The last configuration forms the ground state of the carbon atom in the high field regime \gamma>18.664. The above series of ground state configurations is extracted from the results of numerical calculations for more than twenty electronic configurations selected due to some general energetical arguments.Comment: 6 figures, acc. Vortices in Rotating Superfluid He3

    Get PDF
For about a century now, physicists have been working hard to extend the temperature range accessible to experimental investigations closer and closer to absolute zero. This endeavor has been amply rewarded by new and fundamentally important discoveries. Completely novel continuous vortices in He3‐A and spontaneously magnetized singular vortices in He3‐B are just two of the many interesting peculiarities of rotating superfluid He3.Peer reviewe

Pathophysiology of L-dopa-induced motor and non-motor complications in Parkinson's disease

    Get PDF
Involuntary movements, or dyskinesia, represent a debilitating complication of levodopa (L-dopa) therapy for Parkinson's disease (PD). L-dopa-induced dyskinesia (LID) are ultimately experienced by the vast majority of patients. In addition, psychiatric conditions often manifested as compulsive behaviours, are emerging as a serious problem in the management of L-dopa therapy. The present review attempts to provide an overview of our current understanding of dyskinesia and other L-dopa-induced dysfunctions, a field that dramatically evolved in the past twenty years. In view of the extensive literature on LID, there appeared a critical need to re-frame the concepts, to highlight the most suitable models, to review the central nervous system (CNS) circuitry that may be involved, and to propose a pathophysiological framework was timely and necessary. An updated review to clarify our understanding of LID and other L-dopa-related side effects was therefore timely and necessary. This review should help in the development of novel therapeutic strategies aimed at preventing the generation of dyskinetic symptoms
