Simulated CII observations for SPICA/SAFARI
We investigate the case of CII 158 micron observations for SPICA/SAFARI using
a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulation of the diffuse
interstellar medium (ISM) and the Meudon PDR code. The MHD simulation consists
of two converging flows of warm gas (10,000 K) within a cubic box 50 pc in
length. The interplay of thermal instability, magnetic field and self-gravity
leads to the formation of cold, dense clumps within a warm, turbulent
interclump medium. We sample several clumps along a line of sight through the
simulated cube and use them as input density profiles in the Meudon PDR code.
This allows us to derive intensity predictions for the CII 158 micron line and

Spectral analysis and abundances of the post-HB star HD 76431
HD76431 is a slow rotating post-HB star that shows an underabundance of
helium by 0.5 dex relative to the solar value. These observational facts
suggest that atomic diffusion could be active in its atmosphere. We have used
the MMT and Bok spectra to estimate the atmospheric parameters of the target
star using the model atmospheres and synthetic spectra calculated with TLUSTY
and SYNSPEC. The derived values of the effective temperature, surface gravity,
helium abundance are consistent with those obtained by Ramspeck et al. (2001b).
It appears that NLTE effect are not important for HD76431. We have used Stokes
I spectra from ESPaDOnS at CFHT to perform an abundance analysis and a search
for observational evidence of vertical stratification of the abundance of
certain elements. The results of our abundance analysis are in good agreement
with previously published data with respect to average abundances. Our
numerical simulations show that carbon and nitrogen reveal signatures of
vertical abundance stratification in the atmosphere of HD76431. It appears that
the carbon abundance increases toward the deeper atmospheric layers. Nitrogen
also shows a similar behaviour, but in deeper atmospheric layers we obtain a
significant dispersion for the estimates of its abundance. To our knowledge,
this is the first demonstration of vertical abundance stratification of metals
in a post-HB star and up to now it is the hottest star to show such
stratification features. We also report the detection of two SiIII and one
TiIII emission lines in the spectra of HD76431 that were not detected in

Longitudinal and Transverse Zeeman Ladders in the Ising-Like Chain Antiferromagnet BaCo2V2O8
We explore the spin dynamics emerging from the N\'eel phase of the chain
compound antiferromagnet BaCo2V2O8. Our inelastic neutron scattering study
reveals unconventional discrete spin excitations, so called Zeeman ladders,
understood in terms of spinon confinement, due to the interchain attractive
linear potential. These excitations consist in two interlaced series of modes,
respectively with transverse and longitudinal polarization. The latter have no
classical counterpart and are related to the zero-point fluctuations that
weaken the ordered moment in weakly coupled quantum chains. Our analysis
reveals that BaCo2V2O8, with moderate Ising anisotropy and sizable interchain
interactions, remarkably fulfills the conditions necessary for the observation

High-resolution spectropolarimetric observations of hot subdwarfs
We report on high-resolution spectropolarimetric observations of the hot
subdwarf stars HD 76431 and Feige 66, using the ESPaDOnS echelle
spectropolarimeter at CFHT. We compute cross-correlation Stokes I and V line
profiles to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio. We then average all available
cross-correlation profiles of each star to further decrease the noise level.
Although both targets were previously reported to host kilo-gauss magnetic
fields, we do not derive any evidence of large-scale photospheric fields from
our sets of observations, in spite of tight error bars on the longitudinal
field of the order of 60 gauss for HD 76431 and 200 gauss for Feige 66. A new
analysis of FORS1 observations of HD 76431, which provided the basis for the
original claim of field detection, confirms the absence of any detectable
Zeeman signature, with an error bar of about 100 gauss on the longitudinal

Low temperature structural effects in the (TMTSF)PF and AsF Bechgaard salts
We present a detailed low-temperature investigation of the statics and
dynamics of the anions and methyl groups in the organic conductors
(TMTSF)PF and (TMTSF)AsF (TMTSF :
tetramethyl-tetraselenafulvalene). The 4 K neutron scattering structure
refinement of the fully deuterated (TMTSF)PF-D12 salt allows locating
precisely the methyl groups at 4 K. This structure is compared to the one of
the fully hydrogenated (TMTSF)PF-H12 salt previously determined at the
same temperature. Surprisingly it is found that deuteration corresponds to the
application of a negative pressure of 5 x 10 MPa to the H12 salt. Accurate
measurements of the Bragg intensity show anomalous thermal variations at low
temperature both in the deuterated PF and AsF salts. Two different
thermal behaviors have been distinguished. Low-Bragg-angle measurements reflect
the presence of low-frequency modes at characteristic energies {\theta} =
8.3 K and {\theta} = 6.7 K for the PF-D12 and AsF-D12 salts,
respectively. These modes correspond to the low-temperature methyl group
motion. Large-Bragg-angle measurements evidence an unexpected structural change
around 55 K which probably corresponds to the linkage of the anions to the
methyl groups via the formation of F...D-CD2 bonds observed in the 4 K
structural refinement. Finally we show that the thermal expansion coefficient
of (TMTSF)PF is dominated by the librational motion of the PF
units. We quantitatively analyze the low-temperature variation of the lattice
expansion via the contribution of Einstein oscillators, which allows us to
determine for the first time the characteristic frequency of the PF6
librations: {\theta} = 50 K and {\theta} = 76 K for the PF-D12 and
PF-H12 salts, respectively
Near-field interaction between domain walls in adjacent Permalloy nanowires
The magnetostatic interaction between two oppositely charged transverse
domain walls (DWs)in adjacent Permalloy nanowires is experimentally
demonstrated. The dependence of the pinning strength on wire separation is
investigated for distances between 13 and 125 nm, and depinning fields up to 93
Oe are measured. The results can be described fully by considering the
interaction between the full complex distribution of magnetic charge within
rigid, isolated DWs. This suggests the DW internal structure is not appreciably
disturbed by the pinning potential, and that they remain rigid although the
pinning strength is significant. This work demonstrates the possibility of
non-contact DW trapping without DW perturbation and full continuous flexibility
of the pinning potential type and strength. The consequence of the interaction

Higher-order Kerr terms allow ionization-free filamentation in gases
We show that higher-order nonlinear indices (, , , )
provide the main defocusing contribution to self-channeling of ultrashort laser
pulses in air and Argon at 800 nm, in contrast with the previously accepted
mechanism of filamentation where plasma was considered as the dominant
defocusing process. Their consideration allows to reproduce experimentally
