    Unobtrusive and pervasive video-based eye-gaze tracking

    Eye-gaze tracking has long been considered a desktop technology that finds its use inside the traditional office setting, where the operating conditions may be controlled. Nonetheless, recent advancements in mobile technology and a growing interest in capturing natural human behaviour have motivated an emerging interest in tracking eye movements within unconstrained real-life conditions, referred to as pervasive eye-gaze tracking. This critical review focuses on emerging passive and unobtrusive video-based eye-gaze tracking methods in recent literature, with the aim to identify different research avenues that are being followed in response to the challenges of pervasive eye-gaze tracking. Different eye-gaze tracking approaches are discussed in order to bring out their strengths and weaknesses, and to identify any limitations, within the context of pervasive eye-gaze tracking, that have yet to be considered by the computer vision community.peer-reviewe

    Kinetically Constrained Models

    In this chapter we summarize recent developments in the study of kinetically constrained models (KCMs) as models for glass formers. After recalling the definition of the KCMs which we cover we study the possible occurrence of ergodicity breaking transitions and discuss in some detail how, before any such transition occurs, relaxation timescales depend on the relevant control parameter (density or temperature). Then we turn to the main issue: the prediction of KCMs for dynamical heterogeneities. We focus in particular on multipoint correlation functions and susceptibilities, and decoupling in the transport coefficients.     The tunneling conductance between a superconducting STM tip and an out-of-equilibrium carbon nanotube

    We calculate the current and differential conductance for the junction between a superconducting (SC) STM tip and a Luttinger liquid (LL). For an infinite single-channel LL, the SC coherence peaks are preserved in the tunneling conductance for interactions weaker than a critical value, while for strong interactions (g <0.38), they disappear and are replaced by cusp-like features. For a finite-size wire in contact with non-interacting leads, we find however that the peaks are restored even for extremely strong interactions. In the presence of a source-drain voltage the peaks/cusps split, and the split is equal to the voltage. At zero temperature, even very strong interactions do not smear the two peaks into a broader one; this implies that the recent experiments of Y.-F. Chen et. al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 036804 (2009)) do not rule out the existence of strong interactions in carbon nanotubes.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

    Isolation of pigment cell specific genes in the sea urchin embryo by differential macroarray screening

    New secondary mesenchyme specific genes, expressed exclusively in pigment cells, were isolated from sea urchin embryos using a differential screening of a macroarray cDNA library. The comparison was performed between mRNA populations of embryos having an expansion of the endo-mesodermal territory and embryos blocked in secondary mesenchyme specification. To be able to isolate transcripts with a prevalence down to five copies per cell, a subtractive hybridization procedure was employed. About 400 putative positive clones were identified and sequenced from the 5' end. Gene expression analysis was carried out on a subset of 66 clones with real time quantitative PCR and 40 clones were positive. This group of clones contained sequences highly similar to: the transcription factor glial cells missing (gcm); the polyketide synthase gene cluster (pks-gc); three different members of the flavin-containing monooxygenase gene family (fmo); and a sulfotransferase gene (sult). Using whole mount in situ hybridization, it was shown that these genes are specifically expressed in pigment cells. A functional analysis of the S. purpuratus pks and of one S. purpuratus fmo was carried out using antisense technology and it was shown that their expression is necessary for the biosynthesis of the sea urchin pigment echinochrome. The results suggest that S. purpuratus pks, fmo and sult could belong to a differentiation gene battery of pigment cells

    Measuring Fractional Charge in Carbon Nanotubes

    The Luttinger model of the one-dimensional Fermi gas is the cornerstone of modern understanding of interacting electrons in one dimension. In fact, the enormous class of systems whose universal behavior is adiabatically connected to it are now deemed Luttinger liquids. Recently, it has been shown that metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes are almost perfectly described by the Luttinger Hamiltonian. Indeed, strongly non-Fermi liquid behavior has been observed in a variety of DC transport experiments, in very good agreement with theoretical predictions. Here, we describe how fractional quasiparticle charge, a fundamental property of Luttinger liquids, can be observed in impurity-induced shot noise.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure

    Charge accumulation on a Luttinger liquid

    The average charge Q on a quantum wire, modeled as a single-channel Luttinger liquid, connected to metallic leads and coupled to a gate is studied theoretically. We find that the behavior of the charge as the gate voltage V_G varies depends strongly on experimentally adjustable parameters (length, contact transmission, temperature,...). When the intrinsic backscattering at the contacts is weak (i.e. the conductance is close to 2e^2/h at high temperature), we predict that this behavior should be described by a universal function. For short such wires, the charge increases roughly linearly with V_G, with small oscillations due to quantum interference between electrons scattered at the contacts. For longer wires at low temperature, Coulomb blockade behavior sets in, and the charge increases in steps. In both limits Q/VG\partial Q/\partial V_G, which should characterize the linear response conductance, exhibits periodic peaks in V_G. We show that due to Coulomb interactions the period in the former limit is twice that of the latter, and describe the evolution of the peaks through this crossover. The study can be generalized to multi-channel Luttinger liquids, and may explain qualitatively the recent observation by Liang et al (Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 126801) of a four-electron periodicity for electron addition in single-walled carbon nanotubes.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure

    Is arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy a paediatric problem too?

    Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) is a heart muscle disease that is often familial, characterized by arrhythmias of right ventricular origin, due to transmural fatty or fibrofatty replacement of atrophic myocardium. ARVC is usually diagnosed in the clinical setting between 20 and 40 years of age. The disease is seldom recognised in infancy or under the age of 10, probably because the clinical expression of the disease is normally postponed to youth and adulthood. This review focuses its attention to the pediatric age, defined as the period of life raging from birth to 18 years. During this span of life, ARVC is not so rare as previously supposed and can be identified by applying the same diagnostic criteria proposed for the adult. Ventricular arrhythmias range from isolated ventricular arrhythmias to sustained ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation. Children and adolescents with ARVC must be carefully evaluated and followed-up especially when a family positive history is present, taking into account the high probability during this life-period that asymptomatic affected patients become symptomatic or that arrhythmias worsen during follow-up. The recent identification of the first defective gene opens new avenues for the early identification of affected subjects even when asymptomatic.peer-reviewe

    Chagas' disease is an intracellular parasitic infection owed to a protozoarium, the Trypanosoma cruzi1, affecting a large population in Latinamerica. Within the region 15 to 16 million people are infected2. The worldwide pandemia, due to the infection of the HIV 1 virus, also affects Latinamerican countries. The number of patients with this condition in Central and South Americas amounts to 1.6 million persons3,4. Therefore, both illnesses overlap in a broad geographical area and may coincide in the same patient. The HIV infection, which causes the AIDS syndrome, impairs the immunological system and predisposes to the appearance of opportunistic infections, which may have been hosted unnoticed by the patient until then. Therefore, Chagas' disease, which is a dormant infection in most patients5, may reactivate if the immunological surveillance wanes off as the consequence of the viral insult. Along the last years we6,7 and others8-10 found patients afflicted by AIDS, who developed brain lesions yielded by the Trypanosoma cruzi. The present communication describes three further patients with this condition; one of them is unique because his clinical, radiological and immunological findings differ from those previously reported in the literature.Fil: Sica, Roberto E.
