Effective classroom practice: a mixed-method study of influences and outcomes: a research paper
This brief paper reports findings from a two-year research project, funded by the ESRC, which identified, described and analyzed variation in effective primary and secondary school teachers’ classroom practice. The study also explored these practices in relation to different school contexts and teachers’ professional life phases in order to draw out relevant implications for policy and practice
Characterization of 40-Gbit/s pulses generated using a lithium niobate modulator at 1550 nm using frequency resolved optical gating
The characteristics of 40-Gbit/s pulses generated by exploiting the nonlinear characteristics of a Mach-Zender Lithium Niobate modulator are presented. A high spectral resolution frequency resolved optical gating apparatus has been developed to allow for the complete characterization of the intensity and phase of these pulses. The use of these measurements to simplify the design and optimization of an 80-Gbit/s pulse source, based on this 40-Gbit/s source followed by a nonlinear fiber compressor and multiplexer, is also demonstrated
Optimization of optical data transmitters for 40-Gb/s lightwave systems using frequency resolved optical gating
The measurement technique of frequency resolved optical gating has been used to optimize the phase of a 40-GHz train of optical pulses generated using a continuous-wave laser gated with an external modulator. This technique will be vital for optimization of optical transmitters to be used in systems operating at 40 Gb/s and beyond, as standard measurement techniques will not suffice to optimize such high-speed systems
Observations of the Crab Nebula at energies 4.10(11)
Since the development of gamma-ray astronomical telescopes, the Crab Nebula has been a prime target for observations. From 100 to 1000 MeV, the pulsar PSR0531 is the dominant source with a light-curve similar to that seen at lower energies; there is also some evidence for longterm amplitude variations but none for emission from the Nebula itself. In the very high energy gamma-ray region there have been reported detections of pulsed emission with longterm time variations from minutes to months. Recently a pulsed flux has been reported that resisted over a long time interval. The detection of a flux from the Nebula at the 3 sigma level at energies of 3x1011eV was reported; there was no evidence of periodic emissions on any time scale during the three years of observations. A new measurement of very high energy gamma rays from the Crab Nebula is reported using the imaging system on the Whipple Observatory 10m reflector
Microscopic Surface Structure of Liquid Alkali Metals
We report an x-ray scattering study of the microscopic structure of the
surface of a liquid alkali metal. The bulk liquid structure factor of the
eutectic K67Na33 alloy is characteristic of an ideal mixture, and so shares the
properties of an elemental liquid alkali metal. Analysis of off-specular
diffuse scattering and specular x-ray reflectivity shows that the surface
roughness of the K-Na alloy follows simple capillary wave behavior with a
surface structure factor indicative of surface induced layering. Comparison of
thelow-angle tail of the K67Na33 surface structure factor with the one measured
for liquid Ga and In previously suggests that layering is less pronounced in
alkali metals. Controlled exposure of the liquid to H2 and O2 gas does not
affect the surface structure, indicating that oxide and hydride are not stable
at the liquid surface under these experimental conditions.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, published in Phys. Rev.
Evolutionary quantitative genetics of juvenile body size in a population of feral horses reveals sexually antagonistic selection

The final version is available from Springer via the DOI in this record.Inter-individual variation in juvenile body size can have important consequences for individual fitness, population dynamics, and adaptive evolution. In wild vertebrate populations, larger juvenile size is usually expected to be selected for. However, understanding how such selection may translate into adaptive evolution requires an understanding of the genetic underpinnings of early development and the factors modulating selection. In this study, we characterised the genetic basis of and selection pressures acting upon juvenile body size in a large insular population of feral horses on Sable Island, Canada, to gain insights into the evolution of juvenile body size in wild vertebrate populations. We used pedigree-based quantitative genetic ‘animal models’ to quantify the sources of phenotypic variation in withers-knee length, and assessed the influence of maternal age, sex, and temporal (birth year) and spatial environmental heterogeneity in modulating overwinter survival selection. We found that withers-knee length is moderately heritable and that there was a significant positive genetic correlation between males and females. There was no indication of directional selection in a pooled-sex analysis, but we did find evidence for significant sexually antagonistic selection, with a tendency for smaller body size to be favoured in males and larger body size to be favoured in females. These results suggest that juvenile body size has the potential to evolve in this population, and that selection on juvenile size may play an important role in modulating sex-specific contributions to population dynamics. A Connection between Star Formation in Nuclear Rings and their Host Galaxies
We present results from a photometric H-alpha survey of 22 nuclear rings,
aiming to provide insight into their star formation properties, including age
distribution, dynamical timescales, star formation rates, and galactic bar
influence. We find a clear relationship between the position angles and
ellipticities of the rings and those of their host galaxies, which indicates
the rings are in the same plane as the disk and circular. We use population
synthesis models to estimate ages of each H-alpha emitting HII region, which
range from 1 Myr to 10 Myrs throughout the rings. We find that approximately
half of the rings contain azimuthal age gradients that encompass at least 25%
of the ring, although there is no apparent relationship between the presence or
absence of age gradients and the morphology of the rings or their host
galaxies. NGC1343, NGC1530, and NGC4321 show clear bipolar age gradients, where
the youngest HII regions are located near the two contact points of the bar and
ring. We speculate in these cases that the gradients are related to an
increased mass inflow rate and/or an overall higher gas density in the ring,
which would allow for massive star formation to occur on short timescales,
after which the galactic rotation would transport the HII regions around the
ring as they age. Two-thirds of the barred galaxies show correlation between
the locations of the youngest HII region(s) in the ring and the location of the
