    HexaLab is a WebGL application for real time visualization, exploration and assessment of hexahedral meshes. HexaLab can be used by simply opening www.hexalab.net. This visualization tool targets both users and scholars. Practitioners who employ hexmeshes for Finite Element Analysis, can readily check mesh quality and assess its usability for simulation. Researchers involved in mesh generation may use HexaLab to perform a detailed analysis of the mesh structure, isolating weak points and testing new solutions to improve on the state of the art and generate high quality images. To this end, we support a wide variety of visualization and volume inspection tools. The system also offers immediate access to a repository containing all the publicly available meshes produced with the most recent techniques for hex mesh generation. We believe HexaLab, providing a common tool for visualizing, assessing and distributing results, will push forward the recent strive for replicability in our scientific community. The system supports hexahedral models in the popular .mesh and .vtk ASCII formats. HexaLab aims also to easily present the results of recent papers on hex meshing by directly including them in its own repository when provided by the authors.     Search for NDE Methods to Characterize Thermal History and Mechanical Properties of Al-Li Alloys

    Aluminum-lithium alloys have attracted the interest of the aerospace industry for some time now since the use of such alloys would reduce the weight of an airframe by roughly ten percent. The production of these alloys, however, requires precise thermal and/or thermomechanical treatments to insure required material properties, such as the yield strength and ductility. On-line monitoring of the state of the material thus seems to be desirable for quality control of these materials. This paper presents results of an investigation of fieldable NDE methods capable of providing information on the state of the material. Eddy current measurements were found to be particularly sensitive to Li in solid solution. Furthermore, it appears that hardness measurements are sensitive to the volume fractions, and probably the morphology, of the various precipitates formed. The results obtained so far (see also [1]) as well as by other authors on different aluminum alloys [2–4], this work will continue with additional results to be reported in future publications

    A survey on hospitalised community-acquired pneumonia in Italy.

    Background and aim. Community Acquired Pneumonia (CAP) remains a major cause of disease and death. We evaluated the levels of care, the outcome and the characteristics of hospitalised patients with CAP in a primary hospital in Italy. We also investigated the value of both the Pneumonia Severity Index (PSI) and the modified Appropriateness Evaluation Protocol (AEP) for recognising both the outcome and the unnecessary admissions and stay of hospitalised patients with CAP. Methods. A retrospective review of all the charts of adult patients with CAP at Manerbio, Brescia, Italy between January 2001 and December 2002 was performed. Results. We evaluated 148 patients; their mean age (±SD) was 70 (±17) years; 34% were female. Most patients (87%) had at least a concomitant co-morbid disease. The overall survival rate at 30 days was 88%. All but one death occurred in the high-risk group of patients according to the PSI. On the contrary, the death rate of patients with inappropriate hospital admission according to the AEP was high. Patients with high PSI score had a significantly longer hospital length of stay than the low-risk group. However, a substantial part of the hospital stay did not show any justification into the charts. Conclusions. The PSI, but not the AEP, upon hospital admission, was useful for evaluating the outcome of patients with CAP. The PSI score and the modified AEP can be useful for assessing the appropriateness of hospitalisation for patients with CAP. There is the need for a practical and validated tool to support physicians in their decision making regarding the early and safe discharge of hospitalised patients with CAP

    A Bacillus subtilis cell fraction (BCF) inducing calcium carbonate precipitation: biotechnological perspectives for monumental stone reinforcement

    Abstract Monumental stone decay is a consequence of the weathering action of physical, chemical and biological factors, which induce a progressive increase in porosity. To cope this degradation, bacterial calcium carbonate mineralization has been proposed as a tool for the conservation of monumental calcareous stones. The advantage of this kind of treatment is to obtain a mineral product similar to the stone substrate, mimicking the natural process responsible for stone formation. In this work, the possibility to induce CaCO3 mineralization by a bacteria-mediated system in absence of viable cells was investigated and tested on stone. Our results showed that Bacillus subtilis dead cells as wells as its bacterial cell wall fraction (BCF) can act as calcite crystallization nuclei in solution. BCF consolidating capability was further tested in laboratory on slab stones, and in situ on the Angera Church, a valuable 6th century monumental site. New crystals formation was observed inside pores and significant decrease in water absorption (up to 16.7%) in BCF treated samples. A little cohesion increase was observed in the treated area of the Angera Church, showing the potential of this application, even though further improvements are needed

    Pesticide exposure and gender discrepancy in breast cancer

    OBJECTIVE: It is biologically plausible that occupational and environmental pesticide exposure may contribute to breast cancer risk. Persistent chemical compounds, such as pesticides, tend to be lipophilic and are detected in human breast milk and adipose tissue. Therefore, the present systematic review ims to clarify the gender difference in breast cancer concerning pesticide exposure.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 70 studies satisfied the inclusion criteria and were included in the systematic review. RESULTS: From the studies analyzed, it was observed that exposure to pesticides could be a risk factor for breast cancer in women, in particular in young women and in women who experienced menarche at a young age. In contrast, no association was found for breast cancer in men. Female breast cancer is correlated with estrogen receptor-negative tumor characteristics. Breast cancer in men was no correlated with pesticide exposure. CONCLUSIONS: Breast cancer in women has been linked to estrogen receptor positivity, but this positivity appears to be inversely related to fertility. The estrogen-like effects of organochlorine pesticides could be the cause of the observed gender differences

    Differential cross sections for muonic atom scattering from hydrogenic molecules

    The differential cross sections for low-energy muonic hydrogen atom scattering from hydrogenic molecules are directly expressed by the corresponding amplitudes for muonic atom scattering from hydrogen-isotope nuclei. The energy and angular dependence of these three-body amplitudes is thus taken naturally into account in scattering from molecules, without involving any pseudopotentials. Effects of the internal motion of nuclei inside the target molecules are included for every initial rotational-vibrational state. These effects are very significant as the considered three-body amplitudes often vary strongly within the energy interval ≲0.1\lesssim{}0.1 eV. The differential cross sections, calculated using the presented method, have been successfully used for planning and interpreting many experiments in low-energy muon physics. Studies of μ−\mu^{-} nuclear capture in pμp\mu and the measurement of the Lamb shift in pμp\mu atoms created in H2_2 gaseous targets are recent examples.Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, submitted to Phys.     Angular distributions of scattered excited muonic hydrogen atoms

    Differential cross sections of the Coulomb deexcitation in the collisions of excited muonic hydrogen with the hydrogen atom have been studied for the first time. In the framework of the fully quantum-mechanical close-coupling approach both the differential cross sections for the nl→n′l′nl \to n'l' transitions and ll-averaged differential cross sections have been calculated for exotic atom in the initial states with the principle quantum number n=2−6n=2 - 6 at relative motion energies Ecm=0.01−15E_{\rm {cm}}=0.01 - 15 eV and at scattering angles θcm=0−180∘\theta_{\rm {cm}}=0 - 180^{\circ}. The vacuum polarization shifts of the nsns-states are taken into account. The calculated in the same approach differential cross sections of the elastic and Stark scattering are also presented. The main features of the calculated differential cross sections are discussed and a strong anisotropy of cross sections for the Coulomb deexcitation is predicted.Comment: 5 pages, 9 figure
