The effects of mass transferin the liquid phase on the rate of aluminium evaporation from the Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy
In the present paper, the rate of aluminium evaporation from the Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy during smelting with the use of VIM method at 5 to 1 000 Pa and 1 973 to 2 023 K has been discussed. It has been observed that pressure reduction and temperature rise affect aluminium elimination from the alloy. Based on the determined values of overall mass transfer coefficients and mass transfer coefficients in the liquid phase, it has been found that the resistance related to aluminium mass transfer in the liquid phase is about 8 % of the overall process resistance
Dysphagia caused by a fibrovascular polyp: a case report
A 73-year old man presented with dysphagia for liquid and solid food. Barium contrast study of the esophagus and esophagoscopy demonstrated a fibrovascular polyp. This, almost 10 cm benign esophageal tumor, was removed surgically by a cervical esophagotomy. A fibrovascular polyp is a rare benign tumor of the esophagus, which, however, may give serious complications as asphyxia resulting from laryngeal obstruction leading to sudden death
Interplay between magnetic properties and Fermi surface nesting in iron pnictides
The wave-vector q and doping (x,y) dependences of the magnetic energy, iron
moment, and effective exchange interactions in LaFeAsO{1-x}F{x} and
Ba{1-2y}K{2y}Fe2As2 are studied by self-consistent LSDA calculations for
co-planar spin spirals. For the undoped compounds (x=0, y=0), the minimum of
the calculated total energy, E(q), is for q corresponding to stripe
antiferromagnetic order. Already at low levels of electron doping (x), this
minimum becomes flat in LaFeAsO{1-x}F{x} and for x>=5, it shifts to an
incommensurate q. In Ba{1-2y}K{2y}Fe2As2, stripe order remains stable for hole
doping up to y=0.3. These results are explained in terms of the band structure.
The magnetic interactions cannot be accurately described by a simple classical
Heisenberg model and the effective exchange interactions fitted to E(q) depend
strongly on doping. The doping dependence of the E(q) curves is compared with
that of the noninteracting magnetic susceptibility for which similar trends are

Electron-phonon renormalization of the absorption edge of the cuprous halides
Compared to most tetrahedral semiconductors, the temperature dependence of
the absorption edges of the cuprous halides (CuCl, CuBr, CuI) is very small.
CuCl and CuBr show a small increase of the gap with increasing
temperature, with a change in the slope of vs. at around 150 K: above
this temperature, the variation of with becomes even smaller. This
unusual behavior has been clarified for CuCl by measurements of the low
temperature gap vs. the isotopic masses of both constituents, yielding an
anomalous negative shift with increasing copper mass. Here we report the
isotope effects of Cu and Br on the gap of CuBr, and that of Cu on the gap of
CuI. The measured isotope effects allow us to understand the corresponding
temperature dependences, which we also report, to our knowledge for the first
time, in the case of CuI. These results enable us to develop a more
quantitative understanding of the phenomena mentioned for the three halides,
and to interpret other anomalies reported for the temperature dependence of the
absorption gap in copper and silver chalcogenides; similarities to the behavior

Uncemented and cemented primary total hip arthroplasty in the Swedish Hip Arthroplasty Register: Evaluation of 170,413 operations
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Since the introduction of total hip arthroplasty (THA) in Sweden, both components have most commonly been cemented. A decade ago the frequency of uncemented fixation started to increase, and this change in practice has continued. We therefore analyzed implant survival of cemented and uncemented THA, and whether the modes of failure differ between the two methods of fixation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients registered in the Swedish Hip Arthroplasty Register between 1992 and 2007 who received either totally cemented or totally uncemented THA were identified (n = 170,413). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis with revision of any component, and for any reason, as the endpoints was performed. Cox regression models were used to calculate risk ratios (RRs) for revision for various reasons, adjusted for sex, age, and primary diagnosis. RESULTS: Revision-free 10-year survival of uncemented THA was lower than that of cemented THA (85% vs. 94%, p < 0.001). No age or diagnosis groups benefited from the use of uncemented fixation. Cox regression analysis confirmed that uncemented THA had a higher risk of revision for any reason (RR = 1.5, 95% CI: 1.4-1.6) and for aseptic loosening (RR = 1.5, CI: 1.3-1.6). Uncemented cup components had a higher risk of cup revision due to aseptic loosening (RR = 1.8, CI: 1.6-2.0), whereas uncemented stem components had a lower risk of stem revision due to aseptic loosening (RR = 0.4, CI: 0.3-0.5) when compared to cemented components. Uncemented stems were more frequently revised due to periprosthetic fracture during the first 2 postoperative years than cemented stems (RR = 8, CI: 5-14). The 5 most common uncemented cups had no increased risk of revision for any reason when compared with the 5 most commonly used cemented cups (RR = 0.9, CI: 0.6-1.1). There was no significant difference in the risk of revision due to infection between cemented and uncemented THA. INTERPRETATION: Survival of uncemented THA is inferior to that of cemented THA, and this appears to be mainly related to poorer performance of uncemented cups. Uncemented stems perform better than cemented stems; however, unrecognized intraoperative femoral fractures may be an important reason for early failure of uncemented stems. Direct bandgap optical transitions in Si nanocrystals
The effect of quantum confinement on the direct bandgap of spherical Si
nanocrystals has been modelled theoretically. We conclude that the energy of
the direct bandgap at the -point decreases with size reduction: quantum
confinement enhances radiative recombination across the direct bandgap and
introduces its "red" shift for smaller grains. We postulate to identify the
frequently reported efficient blue emission (F-band) from Si nanocrystals with
this zero-phonon recombination. In a dedicated experiment, we confirm the "red"
shift of the F-band, supporting the proposed identification
Male gender, Charnley class C, and severity of bone defects predict the risk for aseptic loosening in the cup of ABG I hip arthroplasty
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We studied which factor could predict aseptic loosening in ABG I hip prosthesis with hydroxyapatite coating. Aseptic loosening and periprosthetic osteolysis are believed to be caused, at least in part, by increased polyethylene (PE) wear rate via particle disease. Based on it, increased PE wear rate should be associated with aseptic loosening regardless of the type of implant.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We analyzed data from 155 revisions of ABG I hip prostheses to examine the influence of patient, implant, surgery, and wear related factors on the rate of aseptic loosening at the site of the cup. This was calculated by stepwise logistic regression analysis. The stability of the implant and severity of bone defects were evaluated intraoperatively.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found that men (odds ratio, OR = 5.6; <it>p </it>= 0.004), patients with Charnley class C (OR = 6.71; <it>p </it>= 0.013), those having more severe acetabular bone defects (OR = 4 for each degree of severity; <it>p </it>= 0.002), and longer time to revision surgery (OR = 1.51 for each additional year; <it>p </it>= 0.012) had a greater chance of aseptic loosening of the cup. However, aseptic loosening was not directly predicted by polyethylene wear rate in our patients.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Severity of bone defects predicts the risk for aseptic loosening in ABG I cup. Factors potentially associated with the quality of bone bed and biomechanics of the hip might influence on the risk of aseptic loosening in this implant.</p
