    Gravitational Chern-Simons and the adiabatic limit

    We compute the gravitational Chern-Simons term explicitly for an adiabatic family of metrics using standard methods in general relativity. We use the fact that our base three-manifold is a quasi-regular K-contact manifold heavily in this computation. Our key observation is that this geometric assumption corresponds exactly to a Kaluza-Klein Ansatz for the metric tensor on our three manifold, which allows us to translate our problem into the language of general relativity. Similar computations have been performed in a paper of Guralnik, Iorio, Jackiw and Pi (2003), although not in the adiabatic context.Comment: 17 page

    A sub-product construction of Poincare-Einstein metrics

    Given any two Einstein (pseudo-)metrics, with scalar curvatures suitably related, we give an explicit construction of a Poincar\'e-Einstein (pseudo-)metric with conformal infinity the conformal class of the product of the initial metrics. We show that these metrics are equivalent to ambient metrics for the given conformal structure. The ambient metrics have holonomy that agrees with the conformal holonomy. In the generic case the ambient metric arises directly as a product of the metric cones over the original Einstein spaces. In general the conformal infinity of the Poincare metrics we construct is not Einstein, and so this describes a class of non-conformally Einstein metrics for which the (Fefferman-Graham) obstruction tensor vanishes.Comment: 23 pages Minor correction to section 5.     Ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)N epilayers versus antiferromagnetic GaMn3_3N clusters

    Mn-doped wurtzite GaN epilayers have been grown by nitrogen plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. Correlated SIMS, structural and magnetic measurements show that the incorporation of Mn strongly depends on the conditions of the growth. Hysteresis loops which persist at high temperature do not appear to be correlated to the presence of Mn. Samples with up to 2% Mn are purely substitutional Ga1x_{1-x}Mnx_xN epilayers, and exhibit paramagnetic properties. At higher Mn contents, precipitates are formed which are identified as GaMn3_3N clusters by x-ray diffraction and absorption: this induces a decrease of the paramagnetic magnetisation. Samples co-doped with enough Mg exhibit a new feature: a ferromagnetic component is observed up to Tc175T_c\sim175 K, which cannot be related to superparamagnetism of unresolved magnetic precipitates.Comment: Revised versio

    Toric self-dual Einstein metrics as quotients

    We use the quaternion Kahler reduction technique to study old and new self-dual Einstein metrics of negative scalar curvature with at least a two-dimensional isometry group, and relate the quotient construction to the hyperbolic eigenfunction Ansatz. We focus in particular on the (semi-)quaternion Kahler quotients of (semi-)quaternion Kahler hyperboloids, analysing the completeness and topology, and relating them to the self-dual Einstein Hermitian metrics of Apostolov-Gauduchon and Bryant.Comment: 30 page

    Remarks on evolution of space-times in 3+1 and 4+1 dimensions

    A large class of vacuum space-times is constructed in dimension 4+1 from hyperboloidal initial data sets which are not small perturbations of empty space data. These space-times are future geodesically complete, smooth up to their future null infinity, and extend as vacuum space-times through their Cauchy horizon.     FAME : A new beamline for X-ray absorption investigations of very-diluted systems of environmental, material and biological interests

    International audienceFAME is the French Absorption spectroscopy beamline in Material and Environmental sciences at the ESRF (France), operational since September 2002. Technically speaking, the source is a 0.85 T bending magnet and the main optical element is a two-crystals monochromator using either Si(111) or Si(220) monocrystals so that the available energy ranges from 4 to 40 keV. The first crystal is liquid nitrogen cooled in order to avoid a thermal bump and thus preserve the energy resolution. The second crystal is dynamically bent during the energy scan in order to focus the beam in the horizontal plane. Two bendable mirrors are located before and after the monochromator, for beam-collimation (to optimize the energy resolution) and vertical focalization, respectively. During scans, the beam on the sample is kept constant in position and size (around 150 × 200 μm2, V × H). The high flux on the sample combined with the sensitivity of our 30-elements fluorescence detector allow to decrease the detection limit down to 10 ppm or around less than a monolayer.     Solving loop equations by Hitchin systems via holography in large-N QCD_4

    For (planar) closed self-avoiding loops we construct a "holographic" map from the loop equations of large-N QCD_4 to an effective action defined over infinite rank Hitchin bundles. The effective action is constructed densely embedding Hitchin systems into the functional integral of a partially quenched or twisted Eguchi-Kawai model, by means of the resolution of identity into the gauge orbits of the microcanonical ensemble and by changing variables from the moduli fields of Hitchin systems to the moduli of the corresponding holomorphic de Rham local systems. The key point is that the contour integral that occurs in the loop equations for the de Rham local systems can be reduced to the computation of a residue in a certain regularization. The outcome is that, for self-avoiding loops, the original loop equations are implied by the critical equation of an effective action computed in terms of the localisation determinant and of the Jacobian of the change of variables to the de Rham local systems. We check, at lowest order in powers of the moduli fields, that the localisation determinant reproduces exactly the first coefficient of the beta function.Comment: 65 pages, late

Les publications et le cours de Langevin au Collège de France sont évoqués.The first attempts by Langevin to produce and to receive ultrasonic waves are described, with the help of recently discovered documents.
