Simulation of a Hybrid Optical/Radio/Acoustic Extension to IceCube for EeV Neutrino Detection
Astrophysical neutrinos at EeV energies promise to be an interesting
source for astrophysics and particle physics. Detecting the predicted
cosmogenic (``GZK'') neutrinos at 10 - 10 eV would test models of
cosmic ray production at these energies and probe particle physics at 100
TeV center-of-mass energy. While IceCube could detect 1 GZK event per
year, it is necessary to detect 10 or more events per year in order to study
temporal, angular, and spectral distributions. The IceCube observatory may be
able to achieve such event rates with an extension including optical, radio,
and acoustic receivers. We present results from simulating such a hybrid

Lithium in field Am and normal A-F-type stars
Preliminary abundances of lithium and a few other elements have been obtained
for 31 field Am stars with good Hipparcos parallaxes, as well as for 36 normal
A and F stars. Radial and projected rotational velocities were determined as
well. We examine the Li abundance as a function of the stellar parameters: for
normal stars, it is clearly bimodal for Teff < 7500 K, while Am-Fm stars are
all somewhat Li-deficient in this range. The most Li-deficient stars - either
Am or normal - tend to be at least slightly evolved, but the reverse is not

An integrative clustering approach combining particle swarm optimization and formal concept analysis
Length-dependent anisotropic scaling of spindle shape
Spindle length varies dramatically across species and during early development to segregate chromosomes optimally. Both intrinsic factors, such as regulatory molecules, and extrinsic factors, such as cytoplasmic volume, determine spindle length scaling. However, the properties that govern spindle shape and whether these features can be modulated remain unknown. Here, we analyzed quantitatively how the molecular players which regulate microtubule dynamics control the kinetics of spindle formation and shape. We find that, in absence of Clasp1 and Clasp2, spindle assembly is biphasic due to unopposed inward pulling forces from the kinetochore-fibers and that kinetochore-fibers also alter spindle geometry. We demonstrate that spindle shape scaling is independent of the nature of the molecules that regulate dynamic microtubule properties, but is dependent on the steady-state metaphase spindle length. The shape of the spindle scales anisotropically with increasing length. Our results suggest that intrinsic mechanisms control the shape of the spindle to ensure the efficient capture and alignment of chromosomes independently of spindle length
Molecular relaxation effects in hydrogen chloride photoacoustic detection
A photoacoustic (PA) sensor has been developed to monitor hydrogen chloride at sub-ppm level in the 1740-nm region. The system was designed to control the process in the novel low-water-peak optical fiber manufacturing process. Relaxation effects in hydrogen chloride PA detection in oxygen-helium and nitrogen-helium gas mixtures are presented, showing that the generation of the PA signal is strongly affected by the ratio of these substances. Ammonia trace measurements at ppb level based on near-IR photoacoustic spectroscopy
A photoacoustic sensor using a laser diode emitting near 1532nm in combination with an erbium-doped fibre amplifier has been developed for ammonia trace gas analysis at atmospheric pressure. NH3 concentration measurements down to 6ppb and a noise-equivalent detection limit below 3ppb in dry air are demonstrated. Two wavelength-modulation schemes with 1f and 2f detection using a lock-in amplifier were investigated and compared to maximise the signal-to-noise ratio. A quantitative analysis of CO2 and H2O interference with NH3 is presented. Typical concentrations present in ambient air of 400ppm CO2 and 1.15% H2O (50% relative humidity at 20°C) result in a NH3 equivalent concentration of 36ppb and 100ppb, respectivel
Atomic structure and vibrational properties of icosahedral BC boron carbide
The atomic structure of icosahedral BC boron carbide is determined by
comparing existing infra-red absorption and Raman diffusion measurements with
the predictions of accurate {\it ab initio} lattice-dynamical calculations
performed for different structural models. This allows us to unambiguously
determine the location of the carbon atom within the boron icosahedron, a task
presently beyond X-ray and neutron diffraction ability. By examining the inter-
and intra-icosahedral contributions to the stiffness we show that, contrary to

New limits for neutrinoless tau decays
Neutrinoless 3-prong tau lepton decays into a charged lepton and either two charged particles or one neutral meson have been searched for using 4.79fb^(-1) of data collected with the CLEO II detector at Cornell Electron Storage Ring. This analysis represents an update of a previous study and the addition of six decay channels. In all channels the numbers of events found are compatible with background estimates and branching fraction upper limits are set for 28 different decay modes. These limits are either more stringent than those set previously or represent the first attempt to find these decays
Entropies, volumes, and Einstein metrics
We survey the definitions and some important properties of several asymptotic
invariants of smooth manifolds, and discuss some open questions related to
them. We prove that the (non-)vanishing of the minimal volume is a
differentiable property, which is not invariant under homeomorphisms. We also
formulate an obstruction to the existence of Einstein metrics on four-manifolds
involving the volume entropy. This generalizes both the Gromov--Hitchin--Thorpe
