Nature of the constant factor in the relation between radial breathing mode frequency and tube diameter for single-wall carbon nanotubes
Resonance Raman scattering is used to determine the radial breathing mode (RBM) frequency (ωRBM) dependence on tube diameter (dt) for single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). We establish experimentally the ωRBM=227.0/dt as the fundamental relation for pristine SWNTs. All the other RBM values found in the literature can be explained by an upshift in frequency due mostly to van der Waals interaction between SWNTs and environment
Description of Atmospheric Conditions at the Pierre Auger Observatory Using Meteorological Measurements and Models
Atmospheric conditions at the site of a cosmic ray observatory must be known
well for reconstructing observed extensive air showers, especially when
measured using the fluorescence technique. For the Pierre Auger Observatory, a
sophisticated network of atmospheric monitoring devices has been conceived.
Part of this monitoring was a weather balloon program to measure atmospheric
state variables above the Observatory. To use the data in reconstructions of
air showers, monthly models have been constructed. Scheduled balloon launches
were abandoned and replaced with launches triggered by high-energetic air
showers as part of a rapid monitoring system. Currently, the balloon launch
program is halted and atmospheric data from numerical weather prediction models
are used. A description of the balloon measurements, the monthly models as well
as the data from the numerical weather prediction are presented
HST Observations of the Host Galaxies of BL Lacertae Objects
Six BL Lac objects from the complete 1 Jy radio-selected sample of 34 objects
were observed in Cycle 5 with the HST WFPC2 camera to an equivalent limiting
flux of mu_I~26 mag/arcsec^2. Here we report results for the second half of
this sample, as well as new results for the first three objects, discussed
previously by Falomo et al. (1997). In addition, we have analyzed in the same
way HST images of three X-ray-selected BL Lacs observed by Jannuzi et al.
(1997). The ensemble of 9 BL Lac objects spans the redshift range from z=0.19
to ~1. Host galaxies are clearly detected in seven cases, while the other two,
at z~0.258 (redshift highly uncertain) and z=0.997, are not resolved. The HST
images constitute a homogeneous data set with unprecedented morphological
information between a few tenths of an arcsecond and several arcseconds from
the nucleus, allowing us in 6 of the 7 detected host galaxies to rule out
definitively a pure disk light profile. The host galaxies are luminous
ellipticals with an average absolute magnitude of M_I~-24.6 mag (with
dispersion 0.7 mag), more than a magnitude brighter than L* and comparable to
brightest cluster galaxies. The morphologies are generally smooth and have
small ellipticities (epsilon<0.2). Given such roundness, there is no obvious
alignment with the more linear radio structures. In the six cases for which we
have HST WFPC2 images in two filters, the derived color profiles show no strong
spatial gradients and are as expected for K-corrected passively evolving
elliptical galaxies. The host galaxies of the radio-selected and X-ray-selected
BL Lacs for this very limited sample are comparable in both morphology and

Observing Ultra High Energy Cosmic Particles from Space: SEUSO, the Super Extreme Universe Space Observatory Mission
The experimental search for ultra high energy cosmic messengers, from eV to beyond eV, at the very end of the known energy
spectrum, constitutes an extraordinary opportunity to explore a largely unknown
aspect of our universe. Key scientific goals are the identification of the
sources of ultra high energy particles, the measurement of their spectra and
the study of galactic and local intergalactic magnetic fields. Ultra high
energy particles might, also, carry evidence of unknown physics or of exotic
particles relics of the early universe. To meet this challenge a significant
increase in the integrated exposure is required. This implies a new class of
experiments with larger acceptances and good understanding of the systematic
uncertainties. Space based observatories can reach the instantaneous aperture
and the integrated exposure necessary to systematically explore the ultra high
energy universe. In this paper, after briefly summarising the science case of
the mission, we describe the scientific goals and requirements of the SEUSO
concept. We then introduce the SEUSO observational approach and describe the
main instrument and mission features. We conclude discussing the expected
performance of the mission
Dynamics of the Globular Cluster System Associated with M87 (NGC 4486). II. Analysis
We present a dynamical analysis of the globular cluster system associated
with M87 (= NGC 4486), the cD galaxy near the dynamical center of the Virgo
cluster. The analysis utilizes a new spectroscopic and photometric database
which is described in a companion paper (Hanes et al. 2001). Using a sample of
278 globular clusters with measured radial velocities and metallicities, and
new surface density profiles based on wide-field Washington photometry, we
study the dynamics of the M87 globular cluster system both globally --- for the
entire cluster sample --- and separately --- for the metal-rich and metal-poor
globular cluster samples. This constitutes the largest sample of radial
velocities for pure Population II tracers yet assembled for any galaxy. We
discuss the implications of our findings for models for the formation of giant
elliptical galaxies, globular cluster systems, and the Virgo cluster.

The Air Microwave Yield (AMY) experiment - A laboratory measurement of the microwave emission from extensive air showers
The AMY experiment aims to measure the microwave bremsstrahlung radiation
(MBR) emitted by air-showers secondary electrons accelerating in collisions
with neutral molecules of the atmosphere. The measurements are performed using
a beam of 510 MeV electrons at the Beam Test Facility (BTF) of Frascati INFN
National Laboratories. The goal of the AMY experiment is to measure in
laboratory conditions the yield and the spectrum of the GHz emission in the
frequency range between 1 and 20 GHz. The final purpose is to characterise the
process to be used in a next generation detectors of ultra-high energy cosmic
rays. A description of the experimental setup and the first results are

Molecular basis for effects of carcinogenic heavy metals on inducible gene expression.
Certain forms of the heavy metals arsenic and chromium are considered human carcinogens, although they are believed to act through very different mechanisms. Chromium(VI) is believed to act as a classic and mutagenic agent, and DNA/chromatin appears to be the principal target for its effects. In contrast, arsenic(III) is considered nongenotoxic, but is able to target specific cellular proteins, principally through sulfhydryl interactions. We had previously shown that various genotoxic chemical carcinogens, including chromium (VI), preferentially altered expression of several inducible genes but had little or no effect on constitutive gene expression. We were therefore interested in whether these carcinogenic heavy metals might target specific but distinct sites within cells, leading to alterations in gene expression that might contribute to the carcinogenic process. Arsenic(III) and chromium(VI) each significantly altered both basal and hormone-inducible expression of a model inducible gene, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK), at nonovertly toxic doses in the chick embryo in vivo and rat hepatoma H411E cells in culture. We have recently developed two parallel cell culture approaches for examining the molecular basis for these effects. First, we are examining the effects of heavy metals on expression and activation of specific transcription factors known to be involved in regulation of susceptible inducible genes, and have recently observed significant but different effects of arsenic(III) and chromium(VI) on nuclear transcription factor binding. Second, we have developed cell lines with stably integrated PEPCK promoter-luciferase reporter gene constructs to examine effects of heavy metals on promoter function, and have also recently seen profound effects induced by both chromium(VI) and arsenic(III) in this system. These model systems should enable us to be able to identify the critical cis (DNA) and trans (protein) cellular targets of heavy metal exposure leading to alterations in expression of specific susceptible genes. It is anticipated that such information will provide valuable insight into the mechanistic basis for these effects as well as provide sensitive molecular biomarkers for evaluating human exposure
Measuring the Polarization of a Rapidly Precessing Deuteron Beam
This paper describes a time-marking system that enables a measurement of the
in-plane (horizontal) polarization of a 0.97-GeV/c deuteron beam circulating in
the Cooler Synchrotron (COSY) at the Forschungszentrum J\"ulich. The clock time
of each polarimeter event is used to unfold the 120-kHz spin precession and
assign events to bins according to the direction of the horizontal
polarization. After accumulation for one or more seconds, the down-up
scattering asymmetry can be calculated for each direction and matched to a
sinusoidal function whose magnitude is proportional to the horizontal
polarization. This requires prior knowledge of the spin tune or polarization
precession rate. An initial estimate is refined by re-sorting the events as the
spin tune is adjusted across a narrow range and searching for the maximum
polarization magnitude. The result is biased toward polarization values that
are too large, in part because of statistical fluctuations but also because
sinusoidal fits to even random data will produce sizeable magnitudes when the
phase is left free to vary. An analysis procedure is described that matches the
time dependence of the horizontal polarization to templates based on
emittance-driven polarization loss while correcting for the positive bias. This
information will be used to study ways to extend the horizontal polarization
lifetime by correcting spin tune spread using ring sextupole fields and thereby
to support the feasibility of searching for an intrinsic electric dipole moment
using polarized beams in a storage ring. This paper is a combined effort of the

The HST Survey of BL Lacertae Objects. II. Host Galaxies
We have used the HST WFPC2 camera to survey 132 BL Lac objects comprising
seven complete radio-, X-ray-, and optically-selected samples. We obtained
useful images for 110 targets spanning the redshift range 0 < z < 1.3. In two
thirds of the BL Lac images, host galaxies are detected, including nearly all
for z < 0.5 (58 of 63). The highest redshift host galaxy detected is in a BL
Lac object at z=0.664. In 58 of the 72 resolved host galaxies, a de Vaucouleurs
profile is significantly preferred, at >99% confidence, over a pure exponential
disk; the two fits are comparable in the remaining 14 cases. These results
limit the number of disk systems to at most 8% of BL Lacs (at 99% confidence),
and are consistent with all BL~Lac host galaxies being ellipticals. The
detected host galaxies are luminous ellipticals with a median absolute
K-corrected magnitude of M_R= -23.7 +- 0.6 mag, at least one magnitude brighter
than M* and comparable to brightest cluster galaxies. The galaxy morphologies
are generally smooth and undisturbed, with small or negligible ellipticities
(<0.2). There is no correlation between host galaxy and observed nuclear
magnitude or estimated jet power corrected for beaming. If black hole mass is
correlated linearly with bulge mass in general, this implies a large range in
Eddington ratio. Present data strongly support the unification picture with FR
I galaxies constituting the bulk of the parent population of BL Lac objects.Comment: Accepted for publication on ApJ. 38 pages, 8 figure
The HST Survey of BL Lacertae Objects. I. Surface Brightness Profiles, Magnitudes, and Radii of Host Galaxies
We report on a large HST imaging survey of BL Lac objects, at spatial
resolution ~10 times better than previous ground-based surveys. We focus on
data reduction and analysis, describing the procedures used to model the host
galaxy surface brightness radial profiles. A total of 69 host galaxies were
resolved out of 110 objects observed, including almost all sources at z < 0.5.
We classify them morphologically by fitting with either an exponential disk or
a de~Vaucouleurs profile; when one fit is preferred over the other, in 58 of 69
cases, it is invariably the elliptical morphology. This is a very strong result
given the large number of BL Lac objects, the unprecedented spatial resolution,
and the homogeneity of the data set. With the present reclassification of the
host galaxy of 1418+546 as an elliptical, there remain no undisputed examples
of a disk galaxy hosting a BL Lac nucleus. This implies that, at 99%
confidence, fewer than 7% of BL Lacs can be in disk galaxies. The apparent
magnitude of the host galaxies varies with distance as expected if the absolute
magnitudes are approximately the same, with a spread of +-1 mag, out to
redshift z < 0.5. At larger redshifts, only 6 of 23 BL Lacs are resolved so the
present data do not constrain possible luminosity evolution of the host
galaxies. The collective Hubble diagram for BL Lac host galaxies and radio
