High-temperature electric stator
Thermal vacuum tests are conducted on high-temperature stator without a rotor. Electrical characteristics remained satisfactory during tests, insulation improved slightly, and conductor resistance remained constant. The assembly included a bore seal for hermetically sealing the stator from the rotor cavity
Influence of Ileo-Caecal Cannulation and Oxytetracycline on Ileo-Caecal and Rectal Coliform Populations in Pigs
The effect of surgery (insertion of an ileo-caecal cannula) and a subsequent parenteral treatment with oxytetracycline on the ileo-caecal and rectal coliform populations in 7 Swedish Yorkshire castrates were studied. Samples were collected during surgery as well as 3, 7, 14 and 20 days post surgery. The diversity of the enteric coliform flora was initially high both in the ileo-caecal ostium and in rectum. No alteration in the diversity of the enteric coliform flora was observed following surgery and treatment with oxytetracycline. As the insertion of ileo-caecal cannulas did not affect the intestinal coliform flora this study gives support to the use of this technique to mirror processes in the small intestine of pigs. Further, the diversity of the enteric coliform flora was unaffected by the parenteral treatment with oxytetracycline
Cytosolic persistence of mouse brain CYP1A1 in chronic heme deficiency
Previous work has demonstrated that the function of extrahepatic cytochrome P450 CYP1A1 is dependent on the availability of heme. CYP1A1 is involved in the activation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons. In the present study we used a transgenic mouse model with chronic impairment of heme synthesis - female porphobilinogen deaminase-deficient (PBGD-/-) mice - to investigate the effects of limited heme in untreated and β-naphthoflavone (β-NF)-treated animals on the function of CYP1A1 in brain. The heme content of PBGD-/- mice was diminished in the liver and brain compared to wild types. In the liver, partial heme deficiency led to less potent induction of CYP1A1 mRNA after β-NF treatment. In the brain, CYP1A1 protein was detected not only at the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), but also in the cytosol of PBGD-/- mice. Furthermore, 7-deethylation of ethoxyresorufin, an indicator of CYP1A1 metabolic activity, could be restored by heme in cytosol of PBGD-/- mouse brain. Independent of the genotype, we found only one cyp1a1 gene product, indicating that the cytosolic appearance of CYP1A1 most likely did not originate from mutant alleles. We conclude that heme deficiency in the brain leads to incomplete heme saturation of CYP1A1, which causes its improper incorporation into the ER membrane and persistence in the cytosol. Water-ice driven activity on Main-Belt Comet P/2010 A2 (LINEAR) ?
The dust ejecta of Main-Belt Comet P/2010 A2 (LINEAR) have been observed with
several telescopes at the at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos on La
Palma, Spain. Application of an inverse dust tail Monte Carlo method to the
images of the dust ejecta from the object indicates that a sustained, likely
water-ice driven, activity over some eight months is the mechanism responsible
for the formation of the observed tail. The total amount of dust released is
estimated to be 5E7 kg, which represents about 0.3% of the nucleus mass. While
the event could have been triggered by a collision, this cannot be decided from

Photoemission studies of high temperature superconductors
Photoemission studies have been performed on all classes of high temperature superconductors except the Tl‐related compounds. Particular attention was paid to the surface cleanliness. Comparison with band calculation shows that the one‐electron picture cannot adequately explain the electronic structure of this type of materials. Most important, Cu satellites were observed both in the valence band and the Cu 2p core level for all the samples studied, signaling the importance of the d‐d correlation effects. the Cu 3d character of these satellites in the valence band was verified using resonance photoemission. The results have been interpreted in terms of a cluster model derived from the two band Anderson Hamiltonian, which in the past has been used successfully to describe the electronic structure of highly correlated systems. No clear satellite structure was observed in the O 1s core spectrum, which is consistent with the band‐like nature of the oxygen states. Examples of changes in the electronic structure, which could be related to Tc, (such as substituting Y by Pr in the Y‐Ba‐Cu‐O system and altering the number of Cu‐O layers in the Bi‐Ca‐Sr‐Cu‐O system), are also discussed.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/87348/2/330_1.pd
Spatiotemporal Response of Crystals in X-ray Bragg Diffraction
The spatiotemporal response of crystals in x-ray Bragg diffraction resulting
from excitation by an ultra-short, laterally confined x-ray pulse is studied
theoretically. The theory presents an extension of the analysis in symmetric
reflection geometry [1] to the generic case, which includes Bragg diffraction
both in reflection (Bragg) and transmission (Laue) asymmetric scattering
geometries. The spatiotemporal response is presented as a product of a
crystal-intrinsic plane wave spatiotemporal response function and an envelope
function defined by the crystal-independent transverse profile of the incident
beam and the scattering geometry. The diffracted wavefields exhibit amplitude
modulation perpendicular to the propagation direction due to both angular
dispersion and the dispersion due to Bragg's law. The characteristic measure of
the spatiotemporal response is expressed in terms of a few parameters: the
extinction length, crystal thickness, Bragg angle, asymmetry angle, and the
speed of light. Applications to self-seeding of hard x-ray free electron lasers
are discussed, with particular emphasis on the relative advantages of using
either the Bragg or Laue scattering geometries. Intensity front inclination in
asymmetric diffraction can be used to make snapshots of ultra-fast processes
with femtosecond resolution
Challenges in the delivery of e-government through kiosks
Kiosks are increasingly being heralded as a technology through which governments, government departments and local authorities or municipalities can engage with citizens. In particular, they have attractions in their potential to bridge the digital divide. There is some evidence to suggest that the citizen uptake of kiosks and indeed other channels for e-government, such as web sites, is slow, although studies on the use of kiosks for health information provision offer some interesting perspectives on user behaviour with kiosk technology. This article argues that the delivery of e-government through kiosks presents a number of strategic challenges, which will need to be negotiated over the next few years in order that kiosk applications are successful in enhancing accessibility to and engagement with e-government. The article suggests that this involves consideration of: the applications to be delivered through a kiosk; one stop shop service and knowledge architectures; mechanisms for citizen identification; and, the integration of kiosks within the total interface between public bodies and their communities. The article concludes by outlining development and research agendas in each of these areas.</p
