Let MM be a triangulable compact manifold. We prove that, among closed subgroups of \homeo_{0}(M) (the identity component of the group of homeomorphisms of MM), the subgroup consisting of volume preserving elements is maximal

Numerical Solution of a parabolic system with blowup of the solution

In this paper, the author proposes a numerical method to solve a parabolic system of two quasilinear equations of nonlinear heat conduction with sources. The solution of this system may blow up in finite time. It is proved that the numerical solution also may blow up in finite time and an estimate of this time is obtained. The convergence of the scheme is obtained for particular values of the parameters.Comment: 22 page

A mathematical model for Tsunami generation using a conservative velocity-pressure hyperbolic system

By using the Hugoniot curve in detonics as a Riemann invariant of a velocity-pressure model, we get a conservative hyperbolic system similar to the Euler equations. The only differences are the larger value of the adiabatic constant (= 8.678 instead of 1.4 for gas dynamics) and the mass density replaced by a strain density depending on the pressure. The model is not homogeneous since it involves a gravity and a friction term. After the seismic wave reaches up the bottom of the ocean, one gets a pressure wave propagating toward the surface, which is made of a frontal shock wave followed by a regular decreasing profile. Since this regular profile propagates faster than the frontal shock waves, the amplitude of the pressure wave is strongly reduced when reaching the surface. Only in the case of a strong earth tremor the residual pressure wave is still sufficient to generate a water elevation with a sufficient wavelengths enable to propagate as a SaintVenant water wave and to become a tsunami when reaching the shore. We describe the construction of the model and the computation of the wave profile and discuss about the formation or not of a wave

Antiproton modulation in the Heliosphere and AMS-02 antiproton over proton ratio prediction

We implemented a quasi time-dependent 2D stochastic model of solar modulation describing the transport of cosmic rays (CR) in the heliosphere. Our code can modulate the Local Interstellar Spectrum (LIS) of a generic charged particle (light cosmic ions and electrons), calculating the spectrum at 1AU. Several measurements of CR antiparticles have been performed. Here we focused our attention on the CR antiproton component and the antiproton over proton ratio. We show that our model, using the same heliospheric parameters for both particles, fit the observed anti-p/p ratio. We show a good agreement with BESS-97 and PAMELA data and make a prediction for the AMS-02 experiment

Ethicists differ widely in their views on the field of investigation of ethics as a science. These differences underpinning various theories regarding the true nature of ethics, seriously inhibit collaboration between adherents of different stances in this respect. Consequently meaningful progress in the development of ethical sciences can largely be attributed to divergent views on the essence (the meaning kernel or modal nucleus) of the ethical mode of human existence. In this article an attempt is made at identifying the true meaning nucleus of the ethical aspect of reality. To achieve this, the meaning of the concept meaning nucleus as well as the characteristics of meaning nuclei as such and the way in which they should be formulated, are investigated. Finally some prevailing ideas on the nature of the ethical mode of human existence are judged against the findings of this investigation

One of the initial problems which not only ethics as an emerging science has to cope with, but also special sciences like education which have to employ ethical perspectives, is the lack of a unanimous scientific interpretation of the concepts ethics, mores and morals. A direct consequence of this state of affairs is that ethicists differ widely in respect of their views regarding the field of investigation of ethics as a science. What it really amounts to is that different ‘ethicists' are largely operating in dissimilar scientific fields. It stands to reason (hat it is hard to conduct a meaningful scientific discourse about ethical matters in this way and that the results of a great deal of research in ethics will be extremely confusing - not only to ethicists, but, amongst others, to educationists, parents, students and pupils as well, especially with regard to present day problems in respect of sexual relationships, drug abuse, protest art, political turmoil in educational (and other) matters, etc. In this article an account is given of some currcnt interpretations of the concepts ethics, mores and morals and an attempt is made at indicating possibilities which can be explored in the quest for solutions to this dilemma

Share Price Analysis for Selected Companies based on Human Resource Practices

This paper investigates the links between human resources, finance and investments. These departments should work towards the same goal of producing profitability for the organisation and a high level performance. Without this, the organisation does not benefit from the skills in both teams. To highlight the link, finance and investment related measures linked to the price of 12 top ranking and 12 bottom ranking companies from the 2017 Workforce 100 list are evaluated to determine if differences exist in their share price performance. The selected companies are evaluated against selected benchmarks, NASDAQ Composite index as well as the NYSE Composite Index, to analyse their financial performance on a very high level. The analysis includes visual display of the logged share prices of the selected companies included in the study followed by year percentage change comparison and P/E ratio comparison to determine any fundamental differences. The top 12 ranking listed companies showed a higher year percentage change in 2017 based on share prices as well as a higher P/E ratio

The findings of a nutrition and health survey in Site B, a squatter area in Khayelitsha close to Cape Town, are reported.. Of the children under 6 years, 16,8% were found to be under weight for age, 23,5% were stunted and 2,5% wasted, indicating a serious nutritional crisis in this community. Children with a low-birth-weight had a 3 times greater risk of being under weight for age and a 2 times greater risk of being stunted than children with birth-weights greater than 2500 g. Of the children born outside Cape Town, 21,9% were under weight for age compared with 13,5% of children born in Cape Town. Of the pre-school children, 4,2% had completed or were on antituberculosis treatment compared with 2% of the children in the age group 6 - 18 years and 3,2% of adults. Sixty per cent of the pre-school children with tuberculosis were under weight for age. Half the adult population was fully employed, and 22% of households had no wage earners. Assuming literacy after 4 years of schooling, 76% of th.e adults were literate, but only 2,5% had completed Standard 10. Women were generally better qualified than men

Estimating the optimal growth-maximising public debt threshold for Zimbabwe

    Get PDF
This paper attempts to estimate an optimal growth-maximising public debt threshold for Zimbabwe. The public debt threshold is estimated by assessing the relationship between public debt and economic growth. The analysis is undertaken to determine the tipping point beyond which increases in public debt adversely affect economic growth. The paper contributes to the debate on the link between public debt and growth by testing the presence of a Laffer-curve type relationship, where the contribution of public debt to growth is theorised to be positive at lower levels and negative at higher levels of public debt. The analysis confi rms the existence of an inverted U-shaped relationship between public debt and economic growth in Zimbabwe. The optimal growth-maximising public debt threshold was estimated at a public debt-to-GDP ratio of between 45 and 50 per cent. The policy implication of the analysis is the need to ensure that public debt management policies are in line with the growth-maximising public debt threshold. This will ensure sustained economic growth and employment rates, which are key tenets for sustainable economic development.Key words: public debt threshold, growth maximising, Laffer curv

The unity of the church of Christ is a spiritual reality, which finds its origin in the triune God. Although unity is a spiritual reality given by God himself, a comprehensive, visible expression of this essential unity must be achieved. The family of Dutch Reformed Churches in South Africa is currently struggling to achieve visible unity. In this study, two research questions were posed. Firstly, what is members of the family of Dutch Reformed Churches\' attitude towards church unification? Secondly, are there statistically significant differences among members of the family of Dutch Reformed of Churches\' attitude towards church unification when home language, level of education and monthly income are taken into account? A total of 223 respondents were included, which consisted of 104 (46,6%) Dutch Reformed Church members, 72 (32,3%) DRC in Africa members and 47 (21,1%) Uniting Reformed Church members. The Attitude towards Church Unification Questionnaire was utilized. Statistical analysis concluded that members of the Dutch Reformed Churches in all the different denominations have a positive attitude towards church unification. The variable found to have the greatest influence on the attitude of church members was home language. Monthly household income was also significant at the 5% level, while level of education did not have a statistically significant influence on people\'s attitude towards church unification.
