Impermeability effects in three-dimensional vesicles
We analyse the effects that the impermeability constraint induces on the
equilibrium shapes of a three-dimensional vesicle hosting a rigid inclusion. A
given alteration of the inclusion and/or vesicle parameters leads to shape
modifications of different orders of magnitude, when applied to permeable or
impermeable vesicles. Moreover, the enclosed-volume constraint wrecks the
uniqueness of stationary equilibrium shapes, and gives rise to pear-shaped or

ROCK-1 mediates diabetes-induced retinal pigment epithelial and endothelial cell blebbing: Contribution to diabetic retinopathy.
In diabetic retinopathy, the exact mechanisms leading to retinal capillary closure and to retinal barriers breakdown remain imperfectly understood. Rho-associated kinase (ROCK), an effector of the small GTPase Rho, involved in cytoskeleton dynamic regulation and cell polarity is activated by hyperglycemia. In one year-old Goto Kakizaki (GK) type 2 diabetic rats retina, ROCK-1 activation was assessed by its cellular distribution and by phosphorylation of its substrates, MYPT1 and MLC. In both GK rat and in human type 2 diabetic retinas, ROCK-1 is activated and associated with non-apoptotic membrane blebbing in retinal vessels and in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) that respectively form the inner and the outer barriers. Activation of ROCK-1 induces focal vascular constrictions, endoluminal blebbing and subsequent retinal hypoxia. In RPE cells, actin cytoskeleton remodeling and membrane blebs in RPE cells contributes to outer barrier breakdown. Intraocular injection of fasudil, significantly reduces both retinal hypoxia and RPE barrier breakdown. Diabetes-induced cell blebbing may contribute to ischemic maculopathy and represent an intervention target
Rare B decays and Tevatron top-pair asymmetry
The recent Tevatron result on the top quark forward-backward asymmetry, which
deviates from its standard model prediction by 3.4, has prompted many
authors to build new models to account for this anomaly. Among the various
proposals, we find that those mechanisms which produce via - or
-channel can have a strong correlation to the rare B decays. We demonstrate
this link by studying a model with a new charged gauge boson, . In terms of
the current measurements on decays, we conclude that the branching
ratio for is affected most by the new effects.
Furthermore, using the world average branching ratio for the exclusive B decays
at level, we discuss the allowed values for the new parameters.
Finally, we point out that the influence of the new physics effects on the

Implications of a High-Mass Diphoton Resonance for Heavy Quark Searches
Heavy vector-like quarks coupled to a scalar will induce a coupling of
this scalar to gluons and possibly (if electrically charged) photons. The decay
of the heavy quark into , with being a Standard Model quark, provides,
if kinematically allowed, new channels for heavy quark searches. Inspired by
naturalness considerations, we consider the case of a vector-like partner of
the top quark. For illustration, we show that a singlet partner can be searched
for at the 13TeV LHC through its decay into a scalar resonance in the
final states, especially if the diphoton branching ratio of
the scalar is further enhanced by the contribution of non coloured
particles. We then show that conventional heavy quark searches are also
sensitive to this new decay mode, when decays hadronically, by slightly
tightening the current selection cuts. Finally, we comment about the
possibility of disentangling, by scrutinising appropriate kinematic

Searches for Long Lived Neutral Particles
An intriguing possibility for TeV scale physics is the existence of neutral
long lived particles (LOLIPs) that subsequently decay into SM states. Such
particles are many cases indistinguishable from missing transverse energy (MET)
at colliders. We propose new methods to search for these particles using
neutrino telescopes. We study their detection prospects, assuming production
either at the LHC or through dark matter (DM) annihilations in the Sun and the
Earth. We find that the sensitivity for LOLIPs produced at the LHC is limited
by luminosity and detection energy thresholds. On the other hand, in the case
of DM annihilation into LOLIPs, the sensitivity of neutrino telescopes is
promising and may extend beyond the reach of upcoming direct detection
experiments. In the context of low scale hidden sectors weakly coupled to the
SM, such indirect searches allow to probe couplings as small as 10^-15.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figure
Malaria mortality in Africa and Asia: evidence from INDEPTH health and demographic surveillance system sites.
BACKGROUND: Malaria continues to be a major cause of infectious disease mortality in tropical regions. However, deaths from malaria are most often not individually documented, and as a result overall understanding of malaria epidemiology is inadequate. INDEPTH Network members maintain population surveillance in Health and Demographic Surveillance System sites across Africa and Asia, in which individual deaths are followed up with verbal autopsies. OBJECTIVE: To present patterns of malaria mortality determined by verbal autopsy from INDEPTH sites across Africa and Asia, comparing these findings with other relevant information on malaria in the same regions. DESIGN: From a database covering 111,910 deaths over 12,204,043 person-years in 22 sites, in which verbal autopsy data were handled according to the WHO 2012 standard and processed using the InterVA-4 model, over 6,000 deaths were attributed to malaria. The overall period covered was 1992-2012, but two-thirds of the observations related to 2006-2012. These deaths were analysed by site, time period, age group and sex to investigate epidemiological differences in malaria mortality. RESULTS: Rates of malaria mortality varied by 1:10,000 across the sites, with generally low rates in Asia (one site recording no malaria deaths over 0.5 million person-years) and some of the highest rates in West Africa (Nouna, Burkina Faso: 2.47 per 1,000 person-years). Childhood malaria mortality rates were strongly correlated with Malaria Atlas Project estimates of Plasmodium falciparum parasite rates for the same locations. Adult malaria mortality rates, while lower than corresponding childhood rates, were strongly correlated with childhood rates at the site level. CONCLUSIONS: The wide variations observed in malaria mortality, which were nevertheless consistent with various other estimates, suggest that population-based registration of deaths using verbal autopsy is a useful approach to understanding the details of malaria epidemiology
The Leptonic Higgs as a Messenger of Dark Matter
We propose that the leptonic cosmic ray signals seen by PAMELA and ATIC
result from the annihilation or decay of dark matter particles via states of a
leptonic Higgs doublet to leptons, linking cosmic ray signals of dark
matter to LHC signals of the Higgs sector. The states of the leptonic Higgs
doublet are lighter than about 200 GeV, yielding large and
event rates at the LHC. Simple models are
given for the dark matter particle and its interactions with the leptonic
Higgs, for cosmic ray signals arising from both annihilations and decays in the
galactic halo. For the case of annihilations, cosmic photon and neutrino

Neutral Gauge Boson Contributions to the Dimuon Charge Asymmetry in B Decays
Recently, the D0 Collaboration measured the CP-violating like-sign dimuon
charge asymmetry in neutral B decays, finding a 3.2sigma difference from the
standard-model (SM) prediction. A non-SM charge asymmetry a_sl^s suggests a
new-physics (NP) contribution to Bs-Bsbar mixing. In this case, in order to
explain the measured value of a_sl^s within its 1sigma range, NP must be
present in Gamma_12^s, the absorptive part of the mixing. In this paper, we
examine whether such an explanation is possible in models with flavor-changing
Z (ZFCNC) or Z' (Z'FCNC) gauge bosons. The models must also reproduce the
measured values of the indirect CP asymmetry S_psi-phi in Bs -> J/psi phi, and
Delta Gamma_s, the Bs-Bsbar width difference. We find that the ZFCNC model
cannot reproduce the present measured values of S_psi-phi and a_sl^s within
their 1sigma ranges. On the other hand, in the Z'FCNC model, the values of all

Warped Radion Dark Matter
Warped scenarios offer an appealing solution to the hierarchy problem. We
consider a non-trivial deformation of the basic Randall-Sundrum framework that
has a KK-parity symmetry. This leads to a stable particle beyond the Standard
Model, that is generically expected to be the first KK-parity odd excitation of
the radion field. We consider the viability of the KK-radion as a DM candidate
in the context of thermal and non-thermal production in the early universe. In
the thermal case, the KK-radion can account for the observed DM density when
the radion decay constant is in the natural multi-TeV range. We also explore
the effects of coannihilations with the first KK excitation of the RH top, as
well as the effects of radion-Higgs mixing, which imply mixing between the
KK-radion and a KK-Higgs (both being KK-parity odd). The non-thermal scenario,
with a high radion decay constant, can also lead to a viable scenario provided
the reheat temperature and the radion decay constant take appropriate values,
although the reheat temperature should not be much higher than the TeV scale.
Direct detection is found to be feasible if the DM has a small (KK-parity odd)
Higgs admixture. Indirect detection via a photon signal from the galactic
center is an interesting possibility, while the positron and neutrino fluxes
from KK-radion annihilations are expected to be rather small. Colliders can
probe characteristic aspects of the DM sector of warped scenarios with
KK-parity, such as the degeneracy between the radion and the KK-radion (DM)

A Simplest A4 Model for Tri-Bimaximal Neutrino Mixing
We present a see-saw model for Tri-Bimaximal mixing which is based on a
very economical flavour symmetry and field content and still possesses all the
good features of models. In particular the charged lepton mass
hierarchies are determined by the flavour symmetry itself
without invoking a Froggatt-Nielsen U(1) symmetry. Tri-Bimaximal mixing is
exact in leading order while all the mixing angles receive corrections of the
same order in next-to-the-leading approximation. As a consequence the predicted
value of is within the sensitivity of the experiments which will
take data in the near future. The light neutrino spectrum, typical of
see-saw models, with its phenomenological implications, also including
