Dialogue and hegemony : sociolinguistic analysis of 'Charlas' for critique and praxis
A theoretical framework for discourse analysis is presented focusing
on the themes of the formation of hegemony through dialogue and the development
of critique and praxis through informal interaction. Sociolinguistic inquiry in
traditional elementary and secondary classrooms has contributed to expanding
knowledge related to student capacity development and teacher preparation. A
similar discourse analytic approach may also be directed to adult learners in
traditional and community-based settings to increase understanding about the
phenomenon of adult adaptation to new community environments. The lessons of
immigrants and their learning facilitators of problem solving and adaptation to
new circumstances should be a value to educators, teacher educators and policy
makers seeking authentic participation, capacity growth and sustainable
development, particularly in the culturally hybridic Mediterranean region.peer-reviewe
Cultivating experiential knowledge : peer educators working disciplinary borders
Peer educators cultivate knowledge and practices for people to address their broad health needs. Confronting the process of disciplinary colonization, peer educators in occupational health enhance their experiential knowledge function by describing their approaches to facilitating learning dialogue with peers.peer-reviewe
Detection of Earth-like Planets Using Apodized Telescopes
The mission of NASA's Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF) is to find Earth-like
planets orbiting other stars and characterize the atmospheres of these planets
using spectroscopy. Because of the enormous brightness ratio between the star
and the reflected light from the planet, techniques must be found to reduce the
brightness of the star. The current favorite approach to doing this is with
interferometry: interfering the light from two or more separated telescopes
with a phase shift, nulling out the starlight. While this technique can,
in principle, achieve the required dynamic range, building a space
interferometer that has the necessary characteristics poses immense technical
difficulties. In this paper, we suggest a much simpler approach to achieving
the required dynamic range. By simply adjusting the transmissive shape of a
telescope aperture, the intensity in large regions around the stellar image can
be reduced nearly to zero. This approach could lead to construction of a TPF
using conventional technologies, requiring space optics on a much smaller scale
than the current TPF approach.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters, 9 pages, 6 figure
Safety, tolerability and efficacy of intradermal rabies immunization with DebioJect™.
In a single-center study, 66 healthy volunteers aged between 18 and 50years were randomized to be immunized against rabies with three different injection routes: intradermal with DebioJect™ (IDJ), standard intradermal with classical needle (IDS), also called Mantoux method, and intramuscular with classical needle (IM). "Vaccin rabique Pasteur®" and saline solution (NaCl 0.9%) were administered at D0, D7 and D28. Antigen doses for both intradermal routes were 1/5 of the dose for IM. Tolerability, safety and induced immunogenicity of IDJ were compared to IDS and IM routes. Pain was evaluated at needle insertion and at product injection for all vaccination visits. Solicited Adverse Event (SolAE) and local reactogenicity symptoms including pain, redness and pruritus were recorded daily following each vaccination visit. Adverse events (AE) were recorded over the whole duration of the study. Humoral immune response was measured by assessing the rabies virus neutralizing antibody (VNA) titers using Rapid Fluorescent Focus Inhibition Test (RFFIT). Results demonstrated that the DebioJect™ is a safe, reliable and efficient device. Significant decreases of pain at needle insertion and at vaccine injection were reported with IDJ compared to IDS and IM. All local reactogenicity symptoms (pain, redness and pruritus) after injection with either vaccine or saline solution, were similar for IDJ and IDS, except that IDJ injection induced more redness 30min after saline solution. No systemic SolAE was deemed related to DebioJect™ and classical needles. No AE was deemed related to DebioJect™. No Serious Adverse Event (SAE) was reported during the study. At the end of the study all participants were considered immunized against rabies and no significant difference in humoral response was observed between the 3 studied routes
Sinonasal mucosal melanoma: Molecular profile and therapeutic implications from a series of 32 cases
BACKGROUND:
Primary sinonasal mucosal melanomas are aggressive tumors with a poor clinical control by current treatments, raising the urgent need of novel strategies.
METHODS:
By fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), direct sequencing, and immunohistochemistry, we investigate the spectrum of molecular abnormalities in a cohort of 32 cases of primary sinonasal mucosal melanomas.
RESULTS:
We found that all primary sinonasal mucosal melanomas lack BRAF V600E mutation; in addition, they are characterized by somatic mutations of NRAS (22%) and KIT (12.5%), together with amplification of RREB1 (100%) and loss of MYB (76%). The large majority of cases showed KIT protein expression (96.9%). Among tumor suppressor genes, primary sinonasal mucosal melanomas showed loss of PTEN (48.1%) and p16/INK4a (55.2%). All tested cases showed expression of pAkt and pErk, suggesting a combined activation of PI3K/Akt and RAS-mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways.
CONCLUSIONS:
This molecular fingerprint strongly argues against the clinical efficacy of BRAF-inhibitors, but could candidate primary sinonasal mucosal melanomas to therapeutic strategies targeting RAS and KIT mutations or inhibiting PI3K-Akt-mTOR pathway
