One and two dimensional tunnel junction arrays in weak Coulomb blockade regime-absolute accuracy in thermometry
We have investigated one and two dimensional (1D and 2D) arrays of tunnel
junctions in partial Coulomb blockade regime. The absolute accuracy of the
Coulomb blockade thermometer is influenced by the external impedance of the
array, which is not the same in the different topologies of 1D and 2D arrays.
We demonstrate, both by experiment and by theoretical calculations in simple
geometries, that the 1D structures are better in this respect. Yet in both 1D
and 2D, the influence of the environment can be made arbitrarily small by

Electrometry using the quantum Hall effect in a bilayer 2D electron system
We discuss the development of a sensitive electrometer that utilizes a
two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in the quantum Hall regime. As a
demonstration, we measure the evolution of the Landau levels in a second,
nearby 2DEG as the applied perpendicular magnetic field is changed, and extract
an effective mass for electrons in GaAs that agrees within experimental error

Origin of the hysteresis in bilayer 2D systems in the quantum Hall regime
The hysteresis observed in the magnetoresistance of bilayer 2D systems in the
quantum Hall regime is generally attributed to the long time constant for
charge transfer between the 2D systems due to the very low conductivity of the
quantum Hall bulk states. We report electrometry measurements of a bilayer 2D
system that demonstrate that the hysteresis is instead due to non-equilibrium
induced current. This finding is consistent with magnetometry and electrometry
measurements of single 2D systems, and has important ramifications for

Sexual Function, Fertility and Quality of Life after Modern Treatment of Anorectal Malformations
Purpose: Sexual dysfunction and impaired quality of life due to fecal incontinence are common after classic operations for anorectal malformations. We hypothesized that modern repairs may result in improved outcomes. Materials and Methods: Following ethical approval for this single institution cross-sectional study, all patients 16 years or older treated for rectourethral, vestibular or perineal fistula from 1983 onward were sent detailed postal questionnaires on sexual function and quality of life. Each respondent was age and gender matched to 3 controls randomly selected from the general population. Penoscrotal/gynecologic abnormalities were obtained from the records. Results: A total of 41 patients (62%) with a median age of 22 years participated in the study. Of the patients 20 were males with rectourethral fistula (prostatic in 60%), 10 were females with vestibular/perineal fistula and 11 were males with low malformations. Although experience of sexual relationships and orgasmic function were reported in comparable proportions to controls, age at coital debut was significantly delayed in all groups of patients (p Conclusions: While erectile and orgasmic function appear preserved after sagittal repair, further evaluation of fertility issues in males with rectourethral fistula is indicated. The ATF6-Met [67] Val substitution is associated with increased plasma cholesterol levels
Objective— Activating transcription factor 6 (ATF6) is a sensor of the endoplasmic reticulum stress response and regulates expression of several key lipogenic genes. We used a 2-stage design to investigate whether ATF6 polymorphisms are associated with lipids in subjects at increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Methods and Results— In stage 1, 13 tag-SNPs were tested for association in Dutch samples ascertained for familial combined hyperlipidemia (FCHL) or increased risk for CVD (CVR). In stage 2, we further investigated the SNP with the strongest association from stage 1, a Methionine/Valine substitution at amino-acid 67, in Finnish FCHL families and in subjects with CVR from METSIM, a Finnish population-based cohort. The combined analysis of both stages reached region-wide significance (P=9x10–4), but this association was not seen in the entire METSIM cohort. Our functional analysis demonstrated that Valine at position 67 augments ATF6 protein and its targets Grp78 and Grp94 as well as increases luciferase expression through Grp78 promoter. Conclusions— A common nonsynonymous variant in ATF6 increases ATF6 protein levels and is associated with cholesterol levels in subjects at increased risk for CVD, but this association was not seen in a population-based cohort. Further replication is needed to confirm the role of this variant in lipids. We report the association of the ATF6-methionine [67]valine amino-acid substitution with plasma cholesterol levels. Association analyses in 2674 subjects and functional data suggest that the ATF6 gene may influence cholesterol levels in subjects at increased risk to develop cardiovascular disease
MTDATA and the prediction of phase equilibria in oxide systems : 30 years of industrial collaboration
This paper gives an introduction to MTDATA, Phase Equilibrium Software from the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), and describes the latest advances in the development of a comprehensive database of thermodynamic parameters to underpin calculations of phase equilibria in large oxide, sulfide, and fluoride systems of industrial interest. The database, MTOX, has been developed over a period of thirty years based upon modeling work at NPL and funded by industrial partners in a project co-ordinated by Mineral Industry Research Organisation. Applications drawn from the fields of modern copper scrap smelting, high-temperature behavior of basic oxygen steelmaking slags, flash smelting of nickel, electric furnace smelting of ilmenite, and production of pure TiO2via a low-temperature molten salt route are discussed along with calculations to assess the impact of impurities on the uncertainty of fixed points used to realize the SI unit of temperature, the kelvin
Insulin resistance in type 1 diabetes: what is ‘double diabetes’ and what are the risks?
In this review, we explore the concept of ‘double diabetes’, a combination of type 1 diabetes with features of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. After considering whether double diabetes is a useful concept, we discuss potential mechanisms of increased insulin resistance in type 1 diabetes before examining the extent to which double diabetes might increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). We then go on to consider the proposal that weight gain from intensive insulin regimens may be associated with increased CV risk factors in some patients with type 1 diabetes, and explore the complex relationships between weight gain, insulin resistance, glycaemic control and CV outcome. Important comparisons and contrasts between type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes are highlighted in terms of hepatic fat, fat partitioning and lipid profile, and how these may differ between type 1 diabetic patients with and without double diabetes. In so doing, we hope this work will stimulate much-needed research in this area and an improvement in clinical practice

Interrelationships Between the Kinetics of VLDL Subspecies and HDL Catabolism in Abdominal Obesity: A Multicenter Tracer Kinetic Study
Context: Low plasma high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol is a major abnormality in abdominal obesity. This relates due to accelerated HDL catabolism, but the underlying mechanism requires further elucidation. The relationships between HDL catabolism and other variables that may be modified in abdominal obesity, such as very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) subspecies (VLDL1, VLDL2) kinetics, liver fat, or visceral adiposity, remain to be investigated. Objectives: Our aim was to study the associations between HDL apolipoprotein (apo)-A-I fractional catabolic rate (FCR) and the kinetics of VLDL subspecies and estimates of liver and visceral and sc fat. Design: We carried out a multicenter in vivo kinetic study using stable isotopes (deuterated leucine and glycerol) in 62 individuals with abdominal obesity. Results: In a multivariate analysis, among the morphological and biological parameters that may predict apoA-I FCR, liver fat (beta = .400, P = .003), and VLDL1-apoB (beta = .307, P = .020) were independently associated with apoA-I FCR. In a multivariate analysis, among the kinetic parameters, VLDL1-triglycerides (TGs) indirect FCR (beta = .357, P = .001), VLDL1-TG production rate (beta = 0.213, P = .048), and apoA-II FCR (beta = .667, P < .0001) were independently associated with apoA-I FCR. After adjustment for VLDL1-TG production rate, liver fat was no more correlated with apoA-I FCR. No association between apoA-I FCR and visceral fat was observed. Conclusions: We show that VLDL1 is an important independent determinant of apoA-I FCR and more precisely that apoA-I FCR is independently associated with both catabolism and the production of VLDL1-TG. In addition, we show an association between liver fat and apoA-I FCR that is mostly mediated by VLDL1-TG production. These data indicate that, in abdominal obesity, dysfunctional VLDL1 metabolism is an important modulator of HDL apoA-I catabolism
