    Finding Mobile Applications in Cellular Device-to-Device Communications: Hash Function and Bloom Filter-Based Approach

    The rapid growth of mobile computing technology and wireless communication have significantly increased the mobile users worldwide. We propose a code-based discovery protocol for cellular device-to-device (D2D) communications. To realize proximity based services such as mobile social networks and mobile marketing using D2D communications, each device should first discover nearby devices, which have mobile applications of interest, by using a discovery protocol. The proposed discovery protocol makes use of a short discovery code that contains compressed information of mobile applications in a device. A discovery code is generated by using either a hash function or a Bloom filter. When a device receives a discovery code broadcast by another device, the device can approximately find out the mobile applications in the other device. The proposed protocol is capable of quickly discovering massive number of devices while consuming a relatively small amount of radio resources. We analyze the performance of the proposed protocol under the random direction mobility model and a real mobility trace. By simulations, we show that the analytical results well match the simulation results and that the proposed protocol greatly outperforms a simple non-filtering protoco

    Ayurveda recognizes oral cavity as one of the nine openings of physical body and also stressed that these openings are full of blemishes with their secretions throughout day and night, hence it suggests cleaning these openings frequently and regularly. Oral cavity being the chief entrance of the main gateway, as it were to the body, should be kept healthy from the attack of enemies of health. Ayurveda prescribes Dinacharya modalities like brushing the tooth (Dantadhavana), gargling (Kavala and Gandoosha) to keep up the health of the oral cavity, prevention and treatment of diseases of the oral cavity. Researchers have shown that all kinds of chewing sticks (Dantadhavanakashta) and gargling especially with sesame oil (oil pulling) described in Ayurveda texts have anti- plaque and antimicrobial activity thus promote oral hygiene. Use of safe, quality products and practice must be ensured, based on available evidence and traditional medicine has to be acknowledged as part of primary health care. It is also required to ensure patient safety by upgrading the skills and knowledge of the traditional medicine providers. Scientific validation of the Ayurveda oral health practices given above could justify their incorporation in to modern oral health care. Publicity of these techniques using appropriate media would benefit the general population by giving more confidence in ancient practices, thus preventing the decay and loss. The preparation of standard protocol for implementation of these modalities in the community is need of the hour

    Reasons for Seeking HIV-test: Evidence from a Private Hospital in Rural Andhra Pradesh, India

    This study sought to describe the development of HIV counselling and testing services in a rural private hospital and to explore the factors associated with reasons for seeking HIV testing and sexual behaviours among adults seeking testing in the rural hospital. Data for this study were drawn from a voluntary counselling and testing clinic in a private hospital in rural Andhra Pradesh state in southern India. In total, 5,601 rural residents sought HIV counselling and testing and took part in a behavioural risk-assessment survey during October 2003–June 2005. The prevalence of HIV was 1.1%. Among the two reported reasons for test-seeking—based on past sexual behaviour and based on being sick at the time of testing—men, individuals reporting risk behaviours, such as those having multiple pre- and postmarital sexual partners, individuals whose recent partner was a sex worker, and those who reported using alcohol before sex, were more likely to seek testing based on their past sexual behaviour. Men also were more likely to seek testing because they were sick. The findings from this large sample in rural India suggest that providing HIV-prevention and care services as part of an ongoing system of healthcare-delivery may benefit rural residents who otherwise may not have access to these services. The implications of involving the private sector in HIV-related service-delivery and in conducting research in rural areas are discussed. It is argued that services that are gaining prominence in urban areas, such as addressing male heterosexual behaviours and assessing the role of alcohol-use, are equally relevant areas of intervention in rural India

    MDL 17,043 therapy in severe congestive heart failure: Characterization of the early and late hemodynamic, pharmacokinetic, hormonal and clinical response

    MDL 17,043, an agent with both inotropic and vasodilator properties, was evaluated in the treatment of chronic severe heart failure. The early and late hemodynamic, hormonal, pharmacokinetic and clinical responses to oral MDL 17,043 were studied in 20 patients. MDL 17,043 acutely increased cardiac output from 3.6 ± 0.9 to 4.6 ± 1.0 liters/min ( + 28%, p < 0.001) and decreased mean pulmonary artery wedge pressure from 24 ± 8 to 13 ± 8 mm Hg (−46%, p < 0.001), mean right atrial pressure from 10 ± 5 to 4 ± 4 mm Hg (−60%, p < 0.001) and mean arterial pressure from 78 ± 9 to 70 ± 11 mm Hg (−10%, p < 0.001). Hemodynamic improvement was sustained for 8 hours. Plasma renin activity tended to increase (0.10 < p > 0.05), plasma norepinephrine tended to decrease (0.10 < p > 0.05) and arginine vasopressin did not show any directional change. Elimination half-life for MDL 17,043 was approximately 20 hours.Hemodynamic responsiveness was maintained in six patients undergoing restudy at 4 weeks. Initial subjective improvement in the 20 patients occurred in 90%, was present at 4 weeks in 50% and continued longer than 3 months in 25%. Side effects occurred in 75% and required cessation of treatment in 10%. Thirteen (93%) of 14 patients on long-term therapy died (median time after start of MDL 17,043 therapy 39 days). Deaths were sudden in 69%.It is concluded that oral MDL 17,043 produces early and late hemodynamic improvement in patients with severe heart failure. The clinical response suggests caution in its use and controlled trials to ascertain whether MDL 17,043 is safe and efficacious in chronic severe heart failure

    Nature of gene action for kernel yield and its component traits in maize (Zea mays L.)

    Towards understanding the nature of gene action for kernel yield and its components traits, a set of 45 F1 hybrids generated by adopting diallel mating design (Method IV and Model I) involving 10 inbred lines were tested across three seasons for their performance and combining ability. Combining ability analysis revealed that the mean sum of squares due to general and specific combining ability were significant indicating the contribution of both additive and non-additive gene action in controlling days to 50% flowering, days to 50% silking, anthesis-silking interval, days to maturity, plant height, SPAD chlorophyll meter reading, specific leaf area, cob length, cob girth, number of kernel rows per cob, number of kernels per row, 100 kernel weight, harvest index and kernel yield. Estimates of components of variances (σ2GCA and σ2SCA) and ratio of σ2GCA/σ2SCA indicated the predominance of non-additive gene action for all the characters studied. Among the inbred lines, BML 2, DFTY, Heypool and PDM 1474 were found to be the best general combiners across seasons for kernel yield and most of yield components as well as developmental characters. DFTY, Heypool, PDM 1452 and PAM 1474 were identified as good general combiners for earliness. Among the top 20 best performing hybrids, BML 15 × PDM 1452, BML 15 × PDM 1474 and BML 7 × DFTY were rated as promising hybrids based on their superior performance and sca effects for kernel yield and most of the yield components. These hybrids could be recommended for commercial cultivation after extensive testing in multilocation trials

    Panorama of neoplasms of upper GI tract: a 5 year research study

    Background: The diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) are the most common and leading cause of morbidity and mortality than the disorders of any other systems of the body. Gastrointestinal (GI) tract tumors are one of the most common cancers accounting for 11% of all cancers. Among these tumors, upper gastrointestinal tract malignancies are quite aggressive with a dismal prognosis. Malignant tumors are most common than benign. The most common carcinoma of the esophagus is Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Incidence of SCC is less than 5 per 100,000 populations in males and 1 per 100,000 populations in females. Gastric cancer was the second most common cancer in the World and 60% of them occurred in developing countries. The most common carcinoma of the Stomach is Adenocarcinoma.Aim &amp; Objectives: To study the spectrum of neoplastic lesions of the upper gastrointestinal tract by the examination of endoscopic biopsies and surgically resected specimens. To determine the degree of severity of the malignancies by assessing the depth of invasion, Lymph nodal &amp; Omental spread.Methods: The present study is both retrospective &amp; prospective study for a period of 5 years from January 2007 to December 2011. The sample size includes all the endoscopic biopsies &amp; surgically resected specimens of gastrointestinal tract received at Department of Pathology, S.V. Medical College, Tirupati. The study also obtained clearance from the ethical committee of the institution. The biopsy specimens thus obtained were fixed in 10% buffered neutral formalin. The sections were stained routinely with H &amp; E. Special stains and IHC done wherever necessary.Results: we have received 120 specimens regarding the upper gastrointestinal system. Among these 120 specimens, 71 specimens were endoscopic biopsies &amp; 49 specimens were surgically resected specimens. Out of 71 Endoscopic biopsies 28 biopsies were malignant among which 2 was esophagus and 26 were stomach. Out of 49 surgically resected specimens 1 was benign and 32 were malignant tumors. Out of 59 neoplasms of stomach there were single cases each of Sub mucosal Lipoma, Malignant lymphoma, GIST &amp; 56 cases of Adenocarcinoma &amp; its variants were noted.Conclusion: Most of the neoplasms are of stomach (97%). All the neoplasms are malignant except one benign lesion sub mucous lipoma of stomach. Most of the neoplasms of stomach were Adenocarcinoma (96.5%). Both tumors of esophagus were squamous cell carcinoma occurred after 50 years of age.
