A fluid dynamics video is linked to this article, which have been submitted
to the Gallery of Fluid Motion as part of the 65th American Physical Society
meeting of the Division of Fluid Dynamics, held in San Diego, California, USA,
over 17-20 November 2012. The video serves to visualize flows generated in a
rectangular enclosure that are subjected to both mechanical and thermal forcing
through a common horizontal boundary. This system exhibits features consistent
with either horizontal convection or lid-driven cavity flows depending on the
ratio between thermal and mechanical stirring, and three different cases are

Neurons characterization in the cerebral ganglia of the green-lipped mussel, Perna canaliculus, using antibodies raised against neuropeptides and neurotransmitters involved in gastropod egg-laying behaviour and bivalve reproduction and spawning
Immunohistochemical techniques were used to characterise central neurons in the cerebral ganglia of both male and female Perna canaliculus. We used mollusc antibodies raised against neuropeptides and neurotransmitters known to control reproduction and spawning. Anti-ELH and anti-APGWamide showed very strong immunoreactivity in small type of neurons. Anti-5-HT and anti-DA immunoreactivity was mostly in large type of neurons. The labelled neurons are consistent with descriptions of neurosecretory cells implicated in the control of reproduction and spawning on the basis of earlier histological staining techniques used in this species. The use of selective immunological markers for peptides and amines appears to be a promising tool for further characterisation of neurosecretory cells, and to isolate and characterise neuropeptides and other biologically active materials involved in the control of reproduction in Perna canaliculus
Wireless Emergency Alerts: Trust Model Technical Report
Trust is a key factor in the effectiveness of the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) service. Alert originators (AOs) must trust WEA to deliver alerts to the public in an accurate and timely manner. Members of the public must also trust the WEA service before they will act on the alerts that they receive. This research aimed to develop a trust model to enable the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to maximize the effectiveness of WEA and provide guidance for AOs that would support them in using WEA in a manner that maximizes public safety. The research method included Bayesian belief networks to model trust in WEA because they enable reasoning about and modeling of uncertainty. The research approach was to build models that could predict the levels of AO trust and public trust in specific scenarios, validate these models using data collected from AOs and the public, and execute simulations on these models for numerous scenarios to identify recommendations to AOs and FEMA for actions to take that increase trust and actions to avoid that decrease trust. This report describes the process used to develop and validate the trust models and the resulting structure and functionality of the models
Not in my back yard! Sports stadia location and the property market
In recent years sports stadia have been built in the UK, not only for their intended sporting purpose but with the twin aim of stimulating economic and physical regeneration. However, proposals to locate stadia in urban areas often prompt a negative reaction from local communities, fearing a decline in property prices. This paper will use a case study of the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff and the City of Manchester Stadium to illustrate that in contrast to this widely held belief, sports stadia can actually enhance the value of residential property. Furthermore, it will argue that stadia also contribute indirectly to property value through the creation of pride, confidence and enhanced image of an area.</p
Termination Casts: A Flexible Approach to Termination with General Recursion
This paper proposes a type-and-effect system called Teqt, which distinguishes
terminating terms and total functions from possibly diverging terms and partial
functions, for a lambda calculus with general recursion and equality types. The
central idea is to include a primitive type-form "Terminates t", expressing
that term t is terminating; and then allow terms t to be coerced from possibly
diverging to total, using a proof of Terminates t. We call such coercions
termination casts, and show how to implement terminating recursion using them.
For the meta-theory of the system, we describe a translation from Teqt to a
logical theory of termination for general recursive, simply typed functions.
Every typing judgment of Teqt is translated to a theorem expressing the

Perturbative matching of staggered four-fermion operators with hypercubic fat links
We calculate the one-loop matching coefficients between continuum and lattice
four-fermion operators for lattice operators constructed using staggered
fermions and improved by the use of fattened links. In particular, we consider
hypercubic fat links and SU(3) projected Fat-7 links, and their mean-field
improved versions. We calculate only current-current diagrams, so that our
results apply for operators whose flavor structure does not allow
``eye-diagrams''. We present general formulae, based on two independent
approaches, and give numerical results for the cases in which the operators
have the taste (staggered flavor) of the pseudo-Goldstone pion. We find that
the one-loop corrections are reduced down to the 10-20% level, resolving the
problem of large perturbative corrections for staggered fermion calculations of

A Demonstration of LISA Laser Communication
Over the past few years questions have been raised concerning the use of
laser communications links between sciencecraft to transmit phase information
crucial to the reduction of laser frequency noise in the LISA science
measurement. The concern is that applying medium frequency phase modulations to
the laser carrier could compromise the phase stability of the LISA fringe
signal. We have modified the table-top interferometer presented in a previous
article by applying phase modulations to the laser beams in order to evaluate
the effects of such modulations on the LISA science fringe signal. We have
demonstrated that the phase resolution of the science signal is not degraded by

Spatial evolution of a quasi-two-dimensional Kármán vortex street subjected to a strong uniform magnetic field
Corporate governance compliance and disclosure in the banking sector: using data from Japan
Using regression model this study investigates which characteristics of a bank is associated with the extent of corporate governance disclosure in Japan. The findings suggest that on average 8 banks out of a sample of 46 disclose optimal corporate governance information. The regression model results reveal in general that non-executive directors, cross-ownership, capital adequacy ratio and type of auditors are associated with the extent of corporate governance disclosure. Of these four variables, non-executive directors have a more significant impact on the extent of disclosure contrary to total assets and audit firms of banks in the context of Japan. The findings of this paper are relevant for corporate regulators, professional associations and developers of corporate governance code when designing or updating corporate governance code
