Sustained benefit at two years of primary femoral-popliteal stenting compared with balloon angioplasty with optional stenting
Acoustic observations of vertical and horizontal swimming velocities of a diel migrator
A strong sound scattering layer which underwent diel vertical migration was observed over 176 days using a bottom-mounted 600 kHz ADCP at a depth of approximately 285 m on the upper continental slope. Average observed descent times of the scatterers were within 12 minutes of sunrise and average ascent times were within 13 minutes of sunset. Average ascent speeds progressively increased away from the bed and approached 6 cm/s. Average descent speeds similarly reached a maximum of ∼6 cm/s. Horizontal velocities of the scatterers during vertical migration were found to be smaller than ambient velocities (by up to 3 cm/s), and it is inferred that the migrators were swimming horizontally against the flow. Horizontal velocities of the scatterers during time intervals when the layer was near the seafloor were found to be southwest (up to 3 cm/s), and onshelf (up to 1.7 cm/s) relative to the flow above the layer. Swimming velocities were independent of alongshelf flow direction, counter to the hypothesis that the scatterers sought to maintain their position by swimming against the flow
Connecting continuum poroelasticity with discrete synthetic vascular trees for modeling liver tissue
Computational simulations have the potential to assist in liver resection
surgeries by facilitating surgical planning, optimizing resection strategies,
and predicting postoperative outcomes. The modeling of liver tissue across
multiple length scales constitutes a significant challenge, primarily due to
the multiphysics coupling of mechanical response and perfusion within the
complex multiscale vascularization of the organ. In this paper, we present a
modeling framework that connects continuum poroelasticity and discrete vascular
tree structures to model liver tissue across disparate levels of the perfusion
hierarchy. The connection is achieved through a series of modeling decisions,
which include source terms in the pressure equation to model inflow from the
supplying tree, pressure boundary conditions to model outflow into the draining
tree, and contact conditions to model surrounding tissue. We investigate the
numerical behaviour of our framework and apply it to a patient-specific
full-scale liver problem that demonstrates its potential to help assess
surgical liver resection procedure
Maximum-likelihood absorption tomography
Maximum-likelihood methods are applied to the problem of absorption
tomography. The reconstruction is done with the help of an iterative algorithm.
We show how the statistics of the illuminating beam can be incorporated into
the reconstruction. The proposed reconstruction method can be considered as a
useful alternative in the extreme cases where the standard ill-posed

Association of smoking and nicotine dependence with pre-diabetes in young and healthy adults.
INTRODUCTION: Several studies have shown an increased risk of type 2 diabetes among smokers. Therefore, the aim of this analysis was to assess the relationship between smoking, cumulative smoking exposure and nicotine dependence with pre-diabetes.
METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of healthy adults aged 25-41 in the Principality of Liechtenstein. Individuals with known diabetes, Body Mass Index (BMI) >35 kg/m² and prevalent cardiovascular disease were excluded. Smoking behaviour was assessed by self-report. Pre-diabetes was defined as glycosylated haemoglobin between 5.7% and 6.4%. Multivariable logistic regression models were done.
RESULTS: Of the 2142 participants (median age 37 years), 499 (23.3%) had pre-diabetes. There were 1,168 (55%) never smokers, 503 (23%) past smokers and 471 (22%) current smokers, with a prevalence of pre-diabetes of 21.2%, 20.9% and 31.2%, respectively (p <0.0001). In multivariable regression models, current smokers had an odds ratio (OR) of pre-diabetes of 1.82 (95% confidential interval (CI) 1.39; 2.38, p <0.0001). Individuals with a smoking exposure of <5, 5-10 and >10 pack-years had an OR (95% CI) for pre-diabetes of 1.34 (0.90; 2.00), 1.80 (1.07; 3.01) and 2.51 (1.80; 3.59) (p linear trend <0.0001) compared with never smokers. A Fagerström score of 2, 3-5 and >5 among current smokers was associated with an OR (95% CI) for pre-diabetes of 1.27 (0.89; 1.82), 2.15 (1.48; 3.13) and 3.35 (1.73; 6.48) (p linear trend <0.0001).
DISCUSSION: Smoking is strongly associated with pre-diabetes in young adults with a low burden of smoking exposure. Nicotine dependence could be a potential mechanism of this relationship
Genotype-specific Concordance of Chlamydia trachomatis Genital Infection within Heterosexual Partnerships
Background
Sexual transmission rates of Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) cannot be measured directly; however, the study of concordance of Ct infection in sexual partnerships (dyads) can help to illuminate factors influencing Ct transmission.
Methods
Heterosexual men and women with Ct infection and their sex partners were enrolled and partner-specific coital and behavioral data collected for the prior 30 days. Microbiological data included Ct culture, nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT), quantitative Ct polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), and ompA genotyping. We measured Ct concordance in dyads, and factors (correlates) associated with concordance.
Results
121 women and 125 men formed 128 dyads. Overall, 72.9% of male partners of NAAT-positive women and 68.6% of female partners of NAAT-positive men were Ct-infected. Concordance was more common in dyads with culture-positive members (78.6% of male partners, 77% of female partners). Partners of women and men who were NAAT-positive only had lower concordance (33.3%, 46.4%, respectively). Women in concordant dyads had significantly higher median endocervical qPCR values (3,032) compared with CT-infected women in discordant dyads (1,013 IFU DNA equivalents per ml), p<0.01. Among 54 Ct-concordant dyads with ompA genotype data for both members, 96.2% had identical genotypes.
Conclusions
Higher organism load appears associated with concordance among women. Same-genotype chlamydial concordance was high in sexual partnerships. No behavioral factors were sufficiently discriminating to guide partner services activities. Findings may help model coitus-specific transmission probabilities
Crystal structures of self-assembled nanotubes from flexible macrocycles by weak interactions

The assembly is driven by the propensity of the macrocycles to create nearly flat structures displaying a void space within them and the cooperativity of weak directional interactions such as dipole–dipole interactions and CH***Ohydrogen bonds and non-directional interactions such as van der Waals contacts.
