    CSR, tax and development

    This article explores and critically examines the connections between tax and development on the one hand and tax and corporate social responsibility (CSR) on the other. It does so because, while there is increasing recognition of the importance of taxation to efforts to resource the state and to finance ways of tackling poverty, there is a surprising lack of attention to tax avoidance and evasion as a CSR issue for transnational corporations operating in the South, even among those companies that pride themselves on being CSR leaders. We review evidence of these trends, provide an empirical analysis of how leading firms deal with tax in their corporate reporting and make the case for including taxation as a new frontier in progressive CSR

    The impact of Chinese import penetration on the South African manufacturing sector

    This article uses a Chenery-type decomposition and econometric estimation to evaluate the impact of Chinese trade on production and employment in South African manufacturing from 1992 to 2010. The results suggest that increased import penetration from China caused South African manufacturing output to be 5 per cent lower in 2010 than it otherwise would have been. The estimated reduction of total employment in manufacturing as a result of trade with China is larger – in 2010 about 8 per cent – because the declines in output were concentrated on labour-intensive industries and because the increase in imports raised labour productivity within industries

    Visualizing Robot Intent for Object Handovers with Augmented Reality

    Humans are very skillful in communicating their intent for when and where a handover would occur. On the other hand, even the state-of-the-art robotic implementations for handovers display a general lack of communication skills. We propose visualizing the internal state and intent of robots for Human-to-Robot Handovers using Augmented Reality. Specifically, we visualize 3D models of the object and the robotic gripper to communicate the robot's estimation of where the object is and the pose that the robot intends to grasp the object. We conduct a user study with 16 participants, in which each participant handed over a cube-shaped object to the robot 12 times. Results show that visualizing robot intent using augmented reality substantially improves the subjective experience of the users for handovers and decreases the time to transfer the object. Results also indicate that the benefits of augmented reality are still present even when the robot makes errors in localizing the object.Comment: 6 pages, 4 Figures, 2 Table

    Diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis following SARS-Co V-2 vaccination

    The largest world-wide vaccination rollout ever is currently underway to tackle the covid-19 pandemic. We report a case of diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis (SSc) in a 70-year-old male with rapidly progressive skin thickening which developed two weeks after receiving the first dose of the ChAdOx1 nCOV-19 vaccine. As the onset of SSc skin was in close temporal proximity to the administration of the first dose vaccine with no other triggers, we suspected a possible adverse reaction to the ChAdOx1 nCOV-19 vaccine. We hypothesise that the recombinant adenoviral vector encoding the spike protein antigen of SARS-CoV-2 triggered an unexpected immune activation resulting in an atypical presentation of late-onset SSc, within the well-recognised ANA positive, ENA negative subgroup of patients.We review the possible mechanisms underlying autoimmunity when provoked by vaccination and other published rheumatological phenomenon occurring shortly after COVID vaccination

    Constitutive regulation of mitochondrial morphology by Aurora A kinase depends on a predicted cryptic targeting sequence at the N-terminus.

    Aurora A kinase (AURKA) is a major regulator of mitosis and an important driver of cancer progression. The roles of AURKA outside of mitosis, and how these might contribute to cancer progression, are not well understood. Here, we show that a fraction of cytoplasmic AURKA is associated with mitochondria, co-fractionating in cell extracts and interacting with mitochondrial proteins by reciprocal co-immunoprecipitation. We have also found that the dynamics of the mitochondrial network are sensitive to AURKA inhibition, depletion or overexpression. This can account for the different mitochondrial morphologies observed in RPE-1 and U2OS cell lines, which show very different levels of expression of AURKA. We identify the mitochondrial fraction of AURKA as influencing mitochondrial morphology, because an N-terminally truncated version of the kinase that does not localize to mitochondria does not affect the mitochondrial network. We identify a cryptic mitochondrial targeting sequence in the AURKA N-terminus and discuss how alternative conformations of the protein may influence its cytoplasmic fate.MRC CRU
