    Lp mean estimates for an operator preserving inequalities between polynomials

    If P(z)P(z) be a polynomial of degree at most nn which does not vanish in ∣z∣<1|z| < 1, it was recently formulated by Shah and Liman \cite[\textit{Integral estimates for the family of BB-operators, Operators and Matrices,} \textbf{5}(2011), 79 - 87]{wl} that for every R≥1R\geq 1, p≥1p\geq 1, ∥B[P∘σ](z)∥p≤Rn∣Λn∣+∣λ0∣∥1+z∥p∥P(z)∥p,\left\|B[P\circ\sigma](z)\right\|_p \leq\frac{R^{n}|\Lambda_n|+|\lambda_{0}|}{\left\|1+z\right\|_p}\left\|P(z)\right\|_p, where BB is a Bn \mathcal{B}_{n}-operator with parameters λ0,λ1,λ2\lambda_{0}, \lambda_{1}, \lambda_{2} in the sense of Rahman \cite{qir}, σ(z)=Rz\sigma(z)=Rz and Λn=λ0+λ1n22+λ2n3(n−1)8\Lambda_n=\lambda_{0}+\lambda_{1}\frac{n^{2}}{2} +\lambda_{2}\frac{n^{3}(n-1)}{8}. Unfortunately the proof of this result is not correct. In this paper, we present a more general sharp LpL_p-inequalities for Bn\mathcal{B}_{n}-operators which not only provide a correct proof of the above inequality as a special case but also extend them for 0≤p<1 0 \leq p <1 as well.Comment: 16 Page

    Using Insights from Psychology and Language to Improve How People Reason with Description Logics

    Inspired by insights from theories of human reasoning and language, we propose additions to the Manchester OWL Syntax to improve comprehensibility. These additions cover: functional and inverse functional properties, negated conjunction, the definition of exceptions, and existential and universal restrictions. By means of an empirical study, we demonstrate the effectiveness of a number of these additions, in particular: the use of solely to clarify the uniqueness of the object in a functional property; the replacement of and with intersection in conjunction, which was particularly beneficial in negated conjunction; the use of except as a substitute for and not; and the replacement of some with including and only with noneOrOnly, which helped in certain situations to clarify the nature of these restrictions

    A Rare Case of Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome Accompanying Late Postpartum Eclampsia or Hypertensive Encephalopathy-A Clinical Dilemma

    Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome (PRES) refers to a clinic-radiologic diagnosis. Clinically it is characterized by non specific symptoms such as headache, confusion, visual disturbances and seizures. The radiological findings in PRES are thought to be due to vasogenic oedema, predominantly in the posterior cerebral hemispheres, and are reversible with appropriate management. We report a case of reversible encephalopathy diagnosed by MRI scan occurring in atypical areas like the caudate and lentiform nuclei of the brain following an uneventful lower segment caesarean section in a normotensive patient, who was successfully treated with antihypertensives, anticonvulsants and supportive treatment. The differential diagnosis of convulsions in the post-partum period is discussed

    Chromosome assignment of two cloned DNA probes hybridizing predominantly to human sex chromosomes

    In situ hybridization experiments were carried out with two clones, YACG 35 and 2.8, which had been selected from two genomic libraries strongly enriched for the human Y chromosome. Besides the human Y chromosome, both sequences strongly hybridized to the human X chromosome, with few minor binding sites on autosomes. In particular, on the X chromosome DNA from clone YACG 35 hybridized to the centromeric region and the distal part of the short arm (Xp2.2). On the Y chromosome, the sequence was assigned to one site situated in the border region between Yq1.1 and Yq1.2. DNA from clone 2.8 also hybridized to the centromeric region of the X and the distal part of the short arm (Xq2.2). On the Y, however, two binding sites were observed (Yp1.1 and Yq1.2). The findings indicate that sex chromosomal sequences may be localized in homologous regions (as suggested from meiotic pairing) but also at ectopic sites

    Response of the Bay of Bengal to Gopalpur and Paradip super cyclones during 15-31 October 1999

    Response of the Bay of Bengal to two tropical cyclones, i.e. Gopalpur and Paradip super cyclones, during 15-31 October 1999, is studied using a stationary mooring buoy for marine meteorological observations. The National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT, Chennai) has deployed this buoy at 13°N, 87°E, by fixing various meteorological instruments and sensors to acquire sea surface temperature (SST), air temperature (Ta), wind speed (Ws), wind direction (Wd) and ocean currents (Cs) using remote sensing technique through INSAT-1D satellite at an interval of 3 h. The results of the analysis of the above parameters have shown clearly a response (SST difference between before and after formation) of about 0.7°C for the Gopalpur cyclone and 0.9°C for the Paradip cyclone. Ta has shown rapid variations following the rapid movement of cloud decks across the buoy during the cyclone period. The observed changes in the wind speed and direction are in concurrence with analysed mean sea level pressure oscillations. Finally, this study recommends more buoy-based marine meteorological observations over this region and the neighbouring areas, where the tropical cyclones generally occur and subsequently hit the Coromandal coast

    Antibacterial and antifungal evaluation of some chalcogen bearing ligands, their transition and nontransition metal complexes

    Eight chalcogen bearing compounds, 3-(4-fluorophenyl telluro) propylamine (1), 3-(phenyl telluro)propylammonium acetate salt (2), 3-(phenyl telluro)propylacetamide (3) and α-(phenylseleno) acetic acid (4) (1-4 are ligands), [Ph2Sn(Cl).1](NO3 ) (5), [Ph3Sn.1](BPh4 ) (6), [ZnCl2 .2] (7) and [CdCl2.2] (8) (5-8 are complexes of 1 and 2) were synthesised and screened for antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacterial strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus anthracis and the Gramnegative bacteria Escherchia coli. They were also tested for their antifungal activity against Candida tropicalis, Trichophyton rubrum and Asperegillus niger, by using the disk diffusion technique. Inhibition zones demonstrated that compounds 1–3 showed significant activity, due to the presence of N in the form of amine group however Compound 4 bearing an acidic group, shows higher activity against bacterial strains. Compounds 5–8 (having Sn, Zn and Cd in their framework) showed still higher activities, due to increase in the lipophilicity and easier penetration of the compounds into the outer cell wall of the microorganisms, which causes death due to cell membrane rupturing. Compounds 1–8 were most effective against E. coli (bacterial strains), as the cell wall of Gram-negative strains have thin outer lipid membrane, which is made up of lipopolysaccharides. These compounds showed slightly reduced antifungal activity, because the cell wall of fungi is made up of chitin, which is difficult to cross. It could be concluded, from the obtained results that the biological activity of compounds is essentially determined by the number and nature of the organic groups and central metal ion. The presence of NH2, COOH group as well as metal ion like Sn, Zn, Cd in the compounds leads to higher activity

    Salvageability of renal function following renal revascularisation in children with Takayasu’s arteritis-induced renal artery stenosis

    Background. Renal artery revascularisation procedures are usually carried out on children with renal artery stenosis from varied causes, including Takayasu’s   arteritis. Reports on the outcome of such procedures in children usually refer to the improvement in blood pressure, with only minimal mention of effects on renal  function.Objective. Salvageability renal function in children who underw ent renal  revascularisation for Takayasu’s arteritis-induced renal artery stenosis (TARAS) was the focus of this study.Methods. We undertook a retrospective analysis of children aged ≤16 years with angiographically confirmed TARAS who underwent renal artery revascularisation procedures between 1990 and 2010. Outcomes of renal function were studied over a period of 2 years and were defined as: (i) improvement: &gt;20% increase in estimated glomerular filtration rate (e-GFR) from presurgery value; (ii) stabilisation: e-GFR within 20% of presurgery value; and (iii) failure: &gt;20% deterioration in e-GFR from presurgery value. The GFR was estimated using the Schwartz formula.Results. Twenty children (9 males and 11 females, age range 2 - 14 years) had 27 renal artery revascularisation procedures. Thirteen of the patients (65.0%) had bilateral renal artery stenosis. The baseline mean e-GFR was 88.6 (standard deviation (SD) 25.4) mL/min/1.73 m2 and the mean duration of follow-up was 28.80 (SD 25.62) months. All the patients had stable or improved renal function until the 2-year follow-up, when the proportion decreased to 92.3% (12/13), as failure was recorded in one child. Bilateral revascularisation was found to be significantly associated with improvement in renal function in the early postoperative period  (p=0.04).Conclusion. Renal artery revascularisation procedures are successful in salvaging renal function in children with TARA
