    Pair distribution function in a two-dimensional electron gas

    We calculate the pair distribution function, g(r)g(r), in a two-dimensional electron gas and derive a simple analytical expression for its value at the origin as a function of rsr_s. Our approach is based on solving the Schr\"{o}dinger equation for the two-electron wave function in an appropriate effective potential, leading to results that are in good agreement with Quantum Monte Carlo data and with the most recent numerical calculations of g(0)g(0).     Dynamic correlations in symmetric electron-electron and electron-hole bilayers

    The ground-state behavior of the symmetric electron-electron and electron-hole bilayers is studied by including dynamic correlation effects within the quantum version of Singwi, Tosi, Land, and Sjolander (qSTLS) theory. The static pair-correlation functions, the local-field correction factors, and the ground-state energy are calculated over a wide range of carrier density and layer spacing. The possibility of a phase transition into a density-modulated ground state is also investigated. Results for both the electron-electron and electron-hole bilayers are compared with those of recent diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) simulation studies. We find that the qSTLS results differ markedly from those of the conventional STLS approach and compare in the overall more favorably with the DMC predictions. An important result is that the qSTLS theory signals a phase transition from the liquid to the coupled Wigner crystal ground state, in both the electron-electron and electron-hole bilayers, below a critical density and in the close proximity of layers (d <~ r_sa_0^*), in qualitative agreement with the findings of the DMC simulations.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, 2 table

    A dot enzyme immunoassay for detection of IgM antibodies against phenolic glycolipid-1 in sera from leprosy patients

    A visual dipstick dot enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for diagnosis of leprosy is described. The assay is based on detection of IgM antibodies against phenolic glycolipid (PGL-I) in sera from leprosy patients. The antigen (PGL-1 or synthetic disaccharide of PGL-I) was dotted on a nitrocellulose pad stuck on a plastic strip (dipstick). Sera were used at a dilution of 1:200. Peroxidase coupled mouse anti-human IgM monoclonal antibodies were used as the conjugate. A positive test gave a blue dot against a white background. The test was highly specific for leprosy, and was quite sensitive for detection of bacilliferous (BL/LL) leprosy.     Low-Dose Antithymocyte Globulin Has No Disadvantages to Standard Higher Dose in Pediatric Kidney Transplant Recipients: Report from the Pediatric Nephrology Research Consortium

    Introduction Rabbit antithymocyte globulin (rATG) dosing strategies for induction in pediatric kidney transplantation vary between centers. It is not known whether a lower rATG induction dose provides safe and effective immunosuppression compared with a “standard” higher dose. Methods We performed a retrospective multicenter study of all isolated first-time kidney transplant recipients \u3c 21 years old who received rATG induction between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2014 at 9 pediatric centers. An a priori cutoff of a 4.5-mg/kg cumulative rATG dose was used to identify low (≀ 4.5 mg/kg) and standard (\u3e 4.5 mg/kg) exposure groups. Outcomes examined included 12 months posttransplant graft function (estimated glomerular filtration rate [eGFR]); the occurrence of acute rejection, donor-specific antibody (DSA), neutropenia, and viral infection (cytomegalovirus [CMV], Epstein-Barr virus [EBV], and BK virus); and 24-month outcomes of posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) occurrence and patient and graft survival. Results Two hundred thirty-five patients were included. Baseline features of the low and standard rATG dose groups were similar. By 12 months, the rATG dose group had no significant impact on the occurrence of neutropenia, positive DSA, or viral polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Graft function was similar. Acute rejection rates were similar at 17% (low dose) versus 19% (standard dose) (P = 0.13). By 24 months, graft survival (96.4% vs. 94.6%) and patient survival (100% vs. 99.3%) were similar between the low- and standard-dose groups (P = 0.54 and 0.46), whereas the occurrence of PTLD trended higher in the standard-dose group (0% vs. 2.6%, P = 0.07). Conclusion A low rATG induction dose ≀ 4.5 mg/kg provided safe and effective outcomes in this multicenter low immunologic risk pediatric cohort. Prospective studies are warranted to define the optimal rATG induction dose in pediatric kidney transplantation

    Correlation energy of a two-dimensional electron gas from static and dynamic exchange-correlation kernels

    We calculate the correlation energy of a two-dimensional homogeneous electron gas using several available approximations for the exchange-correlation kernel fxc(q,ω)f_{\rm xc}(q,\omega) entering the linear dielectric response of the system. As in the previous work of Lein {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 67}, 13431 (2000)] on the three-dimensional electron gas, we give attention to the relative roles of the wave number and frequency dependence of the kernel and analyze the correlation energy in terms of contributions from the (q,iω)(q, i\omega) plane. We find that consistency of the kernel with the electron-pair distribution function is important and in this case the nonlocality of the kernel in time is of minor importance, as far as the correlation energy is concerned. We also show that, and explain why, the popular Adiabatic Local Density Approximation performs much better in the two-dimensional case than in the three-dimensional one.Comment: 9 Pages, 4 Figure

    Dynamical Properties and Plasmon Dispersion of a Weakly Degenerate Correlated One-Component Plasma

    Classical Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations for a one-component plasma (OCP) are presented. Quantum effects are included in the form of the Kelbg potential. Results for the dynamical structure factor are compared with the Vlasov and RPA (random phase approximation) theories. The influence of the coupling parameter Γ\Gamma, degeneracy parameter ρΛ3\rho \Lambda^3 and the form of the pair interaction on the optical plasmon dispersion is investigated.     Co-expression of CD39 and CD103 identifies tumor-reactive CD8 T cells in human solid tumors.

    Identifying tumor antigen-specific T cells from cancer patients has important implications for immunotherapy diagnostics and therapeutics. Here, we show that CD103+CD39+ tumor-infiltrating CD8 T cells (CD8 TIL) are enriched for tumor-reactive cells both in primary and metastatic tumors. This CD8 TIL subset is found across six different malignancies and displays an exhausted tissue-resident memory phenotype. CD103+CD39+ CD8 TILs have a distinct T-cell receptor (TCR) repertoire, with T-cell clones expanded in the tumor but present at low frequencies in the periphery. CD103+CD39+ CD8 TILs also efficiently kill autologous tumor cells in a MHC-class I-dependent manner. Finally, higher frequencies of CD103+CD39+ CD8 TILs in patients with head and neck cancer are associated with better overall survival. Our data thus describe an approach for detecting tumor-reactive CD8 TILs that will help define mechanisms of existing immunotherapy treatments, and may lead to future adoptive T-cell cancer therapies
