    IMA for space : status and considerations

    International audienceThis article aims at giving an overview the current status and potential perspectives, including the open points, for space applications of the Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) concept defined and developed by the aeronautic industry. At first, a status will be made on the current of the on-board data-handling system for the spaceapplications, in particular the way CNES pushed the concept of platform and the way it has been spread by industry for non-CNES programs (under ESA contract, commercial market, international cooperation) : from SPOT earth observation to telecom satellites including scientific missions based on PROTEUS and MYRIADE platforms will be described. Then it will demonstrated to which extend the IMA concept is not yet directly applicable in the context of the space domain : technical (constraints/limitations on rad-hard processors, limited volume of embedded applications, mission-criticality of all on-board applications...), organisational constraints (ESA, national agencies and the various industry actors) and specific other space domain (market and associated investment budgets) will be detailed

    User quality of experience of mulsemedia applications

    User Quality of Experience (QoE) is of fundamental importance in multimedia applications and has been extensively studied for decades. However, user QoE in the context of the emerging multiple-sensorial media (mulsemedia) services, which involve different media components than the traditional multimedia applications, have not been comprehensively studied. This article presents the results of subjective tests which have investigated user perception of mulsemedia content. In particular, the impact of intensity of certain mulsemedia components including haptic and airflow on user-perceived experience are studied. Results demonstrate that by making use of mulsemedia the overall user enjoyment levels increased by up to 77%

    Exploring jasmonates in the hormonal network of drought and salinity responses

    Present and future food security is a critical issue compounded by the consequences of climate change on agriculture. Stress perception and signal transduction in plants causes changes in gene or protein expression which lead to metabolic and physiological responses. Phytohormones play a central role in the integration of different upstream signals into different adaptive outputs such as changes in the activity of ion-channels, protein modifications, protein degradation, and gene expression. Phytohormone biosynthesis and signaling, and recently also phytohormone crosstalk have been investigated intensively, but the function of jasmonates under abiotic stress is still only partially understood. Although most aspects of jasmonate biosynthesis, crosstalk and signal transduction appear to be similar for biotic and abiotic stress, novel aspects have emerged that seem to be unique for the abiotic stress response. Here, we review the knowledge on the role of jasmonates under drought and salinity. The crosstalk of jasmonate biosynthesis and signal transduction pathways with those of abscisic acid (ABA) is particularly taken into account due to the well-established, central role of ABA under abiotic stress. Likewise, the accumulating evidence of crosstalk of jasmonate signaling with other phytohormones is considered as important element of an integrated phytohormonal response. Finally, protein post-translational modification, which can also occur without de novo transcription, is treated with respect to its implications for phytohormone biosynthesis, signaling and crosstalk. To breed climate- resilient crop varieties, integrated understanding of the molecular processes is required to modulate and tailor particular nodes of the network to positively affect stress tolerance. © 2015 Riemann, Dhakarey, Hazman, Miro, Kohli and Nick

    Human-robot cooperation for robust surface treatment using non-conventional sliding mode control

    © 2018 ISA This work presents a human-robot closely collaborative solution to cooperatively perform surface treatment tasks such as polishing, grinding, deburring, etc. The method considers two force sensors attached to the manipulator end-effector and tool: one sensor is used to properly accomplish the surface treatment task, while the second one is used by the operator to guide the robot tool. The proposed scheme is based on task priority and adaptive non-conventional sliding mode control. The applicability of the proposed approach is substantiated by experimental results using a redundant 7R manipulator: the Sawyer cobot

    Record statistics for biased random walks, with an application to financial data

    We consider the occurrence of record-breaking events in random walks with asymmetric jump distributions. The statistics of records in symmetric random walks was previously analyzed by Majumdar and Ziff and is well understood. Unlike the case of symmetric jump distributions, in the asymmetric case the statistics of records depends on the choice of the jump distribution. We compute the record rate Pn(c)P_n(c), defined as the probability for the nnth value to be larger than all previous values, for a Gaussian jump distribution with standard deviation σ\sigma that is shifted by a constant drift cc. For small drift, in the sense of c/σ≪n−1/2c/\sigma \ll n^{-1/2}, the correction to Pn(c)P_n(c) grows proportional to arctan(n)(\sqrt{n}) and saturates at the value c2σ\frac{c}{\sqrt{2} \sigma}. For large nn the record rate approaches a constant, which is approximately given by 1−(σ/2πc)exp(−c2/2σ2)1-(\sigma/\sqrt{2\pi}c)\textrm{exp}(-c^2/2\sigma^2) for c/σ≫1c/\sigma \gg 1. These asymptotic results carry over to other continuous jump distributions with finite variance. As an application, we compare our analytical results to the record statistics of 366 daily stock prices from the Standard & Poors 500 index. The biased random walk accounts quantitatively for the increase in the number of upper records due to the overall trend in the stock prices, and after detrending the number of upper records is in good agreement with the symmetric random walk. However the number of lower records in the detrended data is significantly reduced by a mechanism that remains to be identified.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure

    Congenital vertebral malformations of the thoracolumbar area can have an important impact in the clinical evolution of French Bulldogs due to the instability it creates at the spinal level. The aim of this study is to show the differences between x-ray and CT scans in vertebral malformations of the French Bulldog. CT scans can offer a higher degree of certainty in the diagnosis of congenital vertebral malformations of the dogs. The VR model can offer a more thorough evaluation of the existing modifications of the vertebral body, allowing the examiner to circumvent the superposition effect than can be observed in the x-ray views and offering the chance to evaluate whether there is scoliosis or kyphosis present

    A Sliding Mode Control Architecture for Human-Manipulator Cooperative Surface Treatment Tasks

This paper presents a control architecture readily suitable for surface treatment tasks such as polishing, grinding, finishing or deburring as carried out by a human operator, with the added benefit of accuracy, recurrence and physical strength as administered by a robotic manipulator partner. The shared strategy effectively couples the human operator propioceptive abilities and fine skills through his interactions with the autonomous physical agent. The novel proposed control scheme is based on task prioritization and a non-conventional sliding mode control, which is considered to benefit from its inherent robustness and low computational cost. The system relies on two force sensors, one located between the last link of the robot and the surface treatment tool, and the other located in some place of the robot end-effector: the former is used to suitably accomplish the conditioning task, while the latter is used by the operator to manually guide the robotic tool. When the operator chooses to cease guiding the tool, the robot motion safely switches back to an automatic reference tracking. The paper presents the theories for the novel collaborative controller, whilst its effectiveness for robotic surface treatment is substantiated by experimental results using a redundant 7R manipulator and a mock-up conditioning tool

    Topology and excited state multiplicity as controlling factors in the carbazole-photosensitized CPD formation and repair

    Photosensitized thyminethymine (ThyThy) formation and repair can be mediated by carbazole (Cbz). The former occurs from the Cbz triplet excited state via energy transfer, while the latter takes place from the singlet excited state via electron transfer. Here, fundamental insight is provided into the role of the topology and excited state multiplicity, as factors governing the balance between both processes. This has been achieved upon designing and synthesizing different isomers of trifunctional systems containing one Cbz and two Thy units covalently linked to the rigid skeleton of the natural deoxycholic acid. The results shown here prove that the Cbz photosensitized dimerization is not counterbalanced by repair when the latter, instead of operating through-space, has to proceed through-bond. © 2022 The Authors.     Effect of systemic corticosteroid therapy for acute heart failure patients with elevated C-reactive protein

    The current study explores whether degree of inflammation, reflected by C-reactive protein (CRP) level, modifies the effect of intravenous (IV) corticosteroid administered in the emergency department (ED) on clinical outcomes in patients with acute heart failure (AHF).We selected patients diagnosed with AHF in the ED, with confirmed N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide > 300 pg/mL and CRP > 5 mg/L in the ED from the Epidemiology of Acute Heart Failure in the Emergency Departments (EAHFE) registry. In these 1109 patients, 121 were treated by corticosteroid. The corticosteroid therapy hazard ratio (HR) for 30 day all-cause mortality was 1.26 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.75-2.09, P = 0.38]. Although not statistically significant, HRs tended to decrease with increasing CRP level, with point estimates favouring corticosteroid at CRP levels above 20. In patients with CRP > 40 mg/L, with adjusted HRs of 0.56 (95% CI 0.20-1.55, P = 0.27) for 30 day all-cause mortality, 0.92 (95% CI 0.52-1.62, P = 0.78) for 30 day post-discharge ED revisit, hospitalization, or death, and adjusted odds ratio of 0.61 (95% CI 0.17-2.14, P = 0.44) for in-hospital all-cause mortality.The present analysis suggests that corticosteroids might have the potential to improve outcomes in AHF patients with inflammatory activation. Larger, prospective studies of anti-inflammatory therapy should be considered to assess potential benefit in patients with the highest degree of inflammation.© 2022 The Authors.
