Creative innovations for the sustainable city: Widening the range of the possible

Europe is first and foremost urban. In the 1990s, cities emerge stronger on the European scene; they wish to become attractive to people and capital. Winning the battle of sustainability is central to this effort, and presupposes a thorough understanding of this frequently used term, with environmental, economic, social and cultural dimensions. The European Foundation's project on innovations conducive to the sustainable city, which this paper analyses, involved an examination of innovative projects in cities of all European Union states. Projects highlighting the environmental dimensions of sustainability include the local movements for environmental plans, charters and Agendas 21, the development of co-generation and heating schemes, innovative types of resource (including waste) management, and actions to limit the use of the private car and enhance public transport. Projects focusing on socio-economic sustainability aim at improving the employment outlook, housing situation and safety conditions of cities. Planning interventions target bringing harmony to cities, improving the mix of uses and functions (in contrast to rigid zoning) linking the city with its periphery and enhancing public spaces as centres of citizenship and democracy

Investigating Economic Growth Impact On Poverty Reduction In East Java: Does Spatial Matter?

Many studies on growth impact on poverty reduction have been conducted in Indonesia using variouseconomic sectors and regional data. However, none of those studies have incorporated on even test thepresence of spatial effects. This study is conducted using spatial analysis method to measure the impactof districts growth on poverty reduction in East Java. The estimation of growth elasticity of poverty isbased on Ravallion's model (2001) by considering the presence of growth and poverty clusters identifiedby ESDA (Explanatory Spatial Data Analysis). The model is run to 37 districts of East Java on 2003and 2007 by incorporating the presence of spatial effect. This is conducted by using spatial econometricprocedure to test and model the presence of spatial effect. The spatial model is established by insertingspatial lag of district growth as independent variable. The estimation result finds that growth impact onpoverty in East Java is geographically different. There are clusters of region which have high growthelasticity of poverty and there also clusters of regions with low and no impact of growth to povertyreduction. The significant impact of district growth spatial lag to poverty reduction in every clusterimplies that poverty reduction program/policy needs to be coordinated among district governments inEast Java. This is more important for districts that share borders.Key words: growth, poverty, district, spatial analysi

Kata Kunci :ASI eksklusif, faktor yang mempengaruhi pemberian AS

Collectibility Analysis for Small and Medium Enterprise – Bank BUKOPIN Case

In Indonesia, small and medium enterprises (SME) have experienced 68% growth in 2008 and47% growth in 2007. The simple structure made it able to respond quickly to changingeconomic conditions and meet local customers' needs, growing sometimes into large andpowerful corporations or failing within a short time of the firm's inception. Unfortunately, lack of access to finance has been cited as an important problem for SMEs, being theconstraint in the creation, development or diversification of their economic activities. Lendinginstitution such as banks conduct an intensive assessment (usually called credit scoring) tofind out the creditworthiness of applicants in order to mitigate the risk. This paper,“Collectability Analysis in Small and Medium Enterprise”, is purposed for creatingappropriate credit scoring model to support the judgmental analysis approach in small andmedium enterprise, finding out how generic and plafond-specific variables affect thecollectability of the debtors from different plafond level (< Rp. 500 Million and > Rp. 500Million), and providing early detector for the bank to predict about future loan performanceof its debtors, thus the bank can be more careful in selecting qualified debtors

Prediction of extreme events in the OFC model on a small world network

We investigate the predictability of extreme events in a dissipative Olami-Feder-Christensen model on a small world topology. Due to the mechanism of self-organized criticality, it is impossible to predict the magnitude of the next event knowing previous ones, if the system has an infinite size. However, by exploiting the finite size effects, we show that probabilistic predictions of the occurrence of extreme events in the next time step are possible in a finite system. In particular, the finiteness of the system unavoidably leads to repulsive temporal correlations of extreme events. The predictability of those is higher for larger magnitudes and for larger complex network sizes. Finally, we show that our prediction analysis is also robust by remarkably reducing the accessible number of events used to construct the optimal predictor.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
