The afterglow of gamma ray bursts II: the cases of GRB 970228 and GRB 970508
Highly radiative expansion of a relativistic shell is shown to explain all
observed features of the afterglows of the two bursts GRB 970228 and GRB
970508. In particular, in the first case the observed time-dependence t^-1.32
of the soft X--ray flux is easily reproduced. The same model, when the
surrounding matter density scales as a r^-2, explains the afterglow of GRB
970508}, which may at first sight appear at odds with that of GRB 970228. In
particular, it is shown that both the late peak in the optical luminosity and
the flat time-dependence of the X--ray luminosity are simultaneously explained
by nonuniformity of the surrounding matter, that the observed optical
time-delay is correctly reproduced for standard parameter values, and that the

Results of expert judgments on the faults and risks with Autosub3 and an analysis of its campaign to Pine Island Bay, Antarctica, 2009
Probabilistic risk assessment is a methodology that can be systematically applied to estimate the risk associated with the design and operation of complex systems. The National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, UK has developed a risk management process tailored to the operation of autonomous underwater vehicles. Central to the application of the risk management process is a probabilistic risk assessment. The risk management process was applied to estimate the risk associated with an Autosub3 science campaign in the Pine Island Glacier, Antarctica, and to support decision making. The campaign was successful. In this paper we present the Autosub3 risk model and we show how this model was used to assess the campaign risk
Fully Adaptive Newton-Galerkin Methods for Semilinear Elliptic Partial Differential Equations
In this paper we develop an adaptive procedure for the numerical solution of
general, semilinear elliptic problems with possible singular perturbations. Our
approach combines both a prediction-type adaptive Newton method and an adaptive
finite element discretization (based on a robust a posteriori error analysis),
thereby leading to a fully adaptive Newton-Galerkin scheme. Numerical
experiments underline the robustness and reliability of the proposed approach
for different examples
Synchronization in random networks with given expected degree sequences
Synchronization in random networks with given expected degree sequences is studied. We also investigate in details the synchronization in networks whose topology is described by classical random graphs, power-law random graphs and hybrid graphs when N goes to infinity. Equilibrium analysis of cellular neural networks
Cellular neural networks are dynamical systems, described by a large set of coupled nonlinear differential equations. The equilibrium point analysis is an important step for understanding the global dynamics and for providing design rules. We yield a set of sufficient conditions (and a simple algorithm for checking them) ensuring the existence of at least one stable equilibrium point. Such conditions give rise to simple constraints, that extend the class of CNN, for which the existence of a stable equilibrium point is rigorously proved. In addition, they are suitable for design and easy to check, because they are directly expressed in term of the template elements
Epidemiological Baseline of Influenza Virus in Wild Aquatic Birds in Hong Kong during the Pre-H5N1 Endemic Era
Influenza virus surveillance was conducted on wild ducks and shorebirds in Hong Kong at the Mai Po Nature Reserve to determine whether East Asian wild aquatic birds passing through or overwintering in Hong Kong are reservoirs of H5N1 influenza viruses and to establish an epidemiological baseline of influenza virus in wild aquatic birds during the pre-H5N1 endemic era. Three influenza viruses were isolated from 3178 faecal samples collected over three sampling periods from 1988 to 2001 during the southern and northern migration periods. The isolation rates and viruses were, respectively 0.08% (H10N5) in 1988 – 1990, 0.12% (H11N1) in 1998 and 0.09% (H3N8) in 1999 – 2001. Whereas tracheal and intestinal colon explants from representative shorebirds were susceptible to in vitro infection by the H10N5 virus, orally infected shorebirds were apparently not. Genetic analyses indicated that the nucleoprotein, matrix and nonstructural genes of the three viruses were related to those of aquatic bird viruses in Asia, but not to those of the human H5N1 virus. The present study provided epidemiological baseline information for future influenza virus surveillance in wild aquatic birds in southeast China
