    Active Site Design in a Chemzyme: Development of a Highly Asymmetric and Remarkably Temperature-Independent Catalyst for the Imino Aldol Reaction**

    The asymmetric aldol reaction of an enolate or enolate equivalent with an imine is a reaction of established synthetic importance for the synthesis of chiral amines in general and bamino esters in particular. [1] The development of chiral catalysts for this reaction has proven to be a difficult task and had eluded all attempts until recently when Kobayashi and co-workers examined imines derived from o-aminophenol. [2±4] Their method involves the catalysis of the reactions of these imines and ketene acetals with a catalyst generated from zirconium(iv) tert-butoxide and two equivalents of (R)-6,6'-dibromoBINOL (BINOL 1,1'-binaphth-2-ol). Our interest in the synthesis of chiral amines led us to investigate the use of VAPOL-derived catalysts A comparison of catalysts prepared from BINOL, 6,6'-dibromoBINOL and VAPOL ligands on the asymmetric induction in the reaction of the phenyl-substituted imine 1 and acetal 2 is summarized in [2] The VAPOL catalyst could be prepared in either methylene chloride or toluene, but for solubility reasons, the BINOL catalysts were prepared in methylene chloride. The VAPOL and Br 2 BINOL catalysts were superior to the BINOL catalyst at À 45 8C. The asymmetric induction dropped for the Br 2 BINOL catalyst when the temperature was raised from À 45 8C to room temperature, but curiously, the asymmetric induction for the VAPOL catalyst was essentially unchanged over this same temperature range. Only a small drop-off is noted (85 % ee) when the temperature is raised to 41 8C and the substrate-to-catalyst ratio is raised to 200:1 (entry 5). Both the R enantiomers of BINOL and Br 2 BINOL ligands give the R enantiomer of the product 3, whereas with the VAPOL ligand, it is the S enantiomer that gives the R product. This reversal is not unexpected given the structures of the ligands where the zirconium is in the minor groove of the BINOL ligands and in the major groove of the VAPOL ligand. [2g] It is clear from the examination of space-filling CPK models that it is possible to bind two VAPOL ligands to one zirconium atom but only with a facial arrangement of the four oxygen atoms as is illustratred by structure 6 in Scheme 1. This is supported by 1 H NMR experiments on a catalyst generated from zirconium tetraisopropoxide and VAPOL in the presence of two equivalents of N-methyl imidiazole. A clean spectrum is only observed with two equivalents of VAPOL relative to zirconium and the spectrum is consistent with a single C 2 -symmetrical species were performed by using the TEXSAN [13] crystallographic software package.     Stories from the field:Women's networking as gender capital in entrepreneurial ecosystems

    Women are underrepresented in successful entrepreneurial ecosystems and the creation of women-only entrepreneurial networks has been a widespread policy response. We examine the entrepreneurial ecosystem construct and suggest that it, and the role networks play in entrepreneurial ecosystems, can be analysed in terms of Bourdieu's socio-analysis as field, habitus and capital. Specifically, we develop the notion of gender capital as the skill set associated with femininity or from simply being recognized as feminine. We apply this to the development of women's entrepreneurial networks as a gender capital enhancing initiative. Using data from qualitative interviews with network coordinators and women entrepreneurs we reflect on the extent to which formally established women-only networks generate gender capital for their members and improve their ability to participate in the entrepreneurial ecosystem. The paper concludes by drawing out the implications of our analysis for theory, entrepreneurial practice and economic development policy

    Karl E. Weick’s The Social Psychology of Organizing has been one of the most influential books in organization studies, providing the theoretical underpinnings of several research programs. Importantly, the book is widely credited with initiating the process turn in the field, leading to the ‘gerundizing’ of management and organization studies: the persistent effort to understand organizational phenomena as ongoing accomplishments. The emphasis of the book on organizing (rather than on organizations) and its links with sensemaking have made it the most influential treatise on organizational epistemology. In this introduction, we review Weick’s magnum opus, underline and assess its key themes, and suggest ways in which several of them may be taken forward

    Networks or structures? : organizing cultural routes around heritage values : case studies from Poland

    The most common way of managing cultural heritage recently takes form of cultural routes as they seem to offer a new model of participation in culture to their recipients; they are often a peculiar anchor point for inhabitants to let them understand their identity and form the future; they offer actual tours to enter into interaction with culture and history, to build together that creation of the heritage, which so is becoming not only a touristic product, but, first of all, the space for cultural, social and civic activity. Yet, so far, according to what we know, the research problem concerning the method of cultural route organization (points on the route) into solid structures or more of the networked nature, has not been deliberated. A question arises, what values are brought by routes and how to organize routes to be the carriers of the values important for communities, where routes are functioning. And, as a consequence, if, from the point of view of the values of local communities, organizing solid route structures or organizing more widely-spaced, network-based routes would bring effects and what those effects would be. Thus, the posed question is of course scientifically imprecise because a network is a type of structure but presents a given direction for the development of cultural route structures. Our objective here is to present a certain solidity and rigidity of structure with dynamic and smooth understanding of the network. The research presented in the article is based on 3 case studies. We have selected for this purpose the three largest cultural routes in Poland, organized to various degrees.     Self-authorship and creative industries workers’ career decision-making

    Career decision-making is arguably at its most complex within professions where work is precarious and career calling is strong. This article reports from a study that examined the career decision-making of creative industries workers, for whom career decisions can impact psychological well-being and identity just as much as they impact individuals’ work and career. The respondents were 693 creative industries workers who used a largely open-ended survey to create in-depth reflections on formative moments and career decision-making. Analysis involved the theoretical model of self-authorship, which provides a way of understanding how people employ their sense of self to make meaning of their experiences. The self-authorship process emerged as a complex, non-linear and consistent feature of career decision-making. Theoretical contributions include a non-linear view of self-authorship that exposes the authorship of visible and covert multiple selves prompted by both proactive and reactive identity work
