Transportation of water-based slurry in an open furrow, launder or stream
The transport of large boulders in a furrow from a mining area to a nearby pond was considered. The furrow is filled with a mixture of water and soil particles flowing down to the pond at a very high velocity. Due to operating constraints, the slope of the furrow is reduced progressively. A formula is derived, relating the slope of the furrow and the composition of the fluid to the maximum size and shape of the transported boulders. The characteristics of the boulders carried all
the way down to the pond may then be determined
Triaxial nuclear models and the outer crust of nonaccreting cold neutron stars
The properties and composition of the outer crust of nonaccreting cold
neutron stars are studied by applying the model of Baym, Pethick, and
Sutherland (BPS) and taking into account for the first time triaxial
deformations of nuclei. Two theoretical nuclear models, Hartree-Fock plus
pairing in the BCS approximation (HF-BCS) with Skyrme SLy6 parametrization and
Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov (HFB) with Gogny D1S force, are used to calculate the
nuclear masses. The two theoretical calculations are compared concerning their
neutron drip line, binding energies, magic neutron numbers, and the sequence of
nuclei in the outer crust of nonaccreting cold neutron stars, with special
emphasis on the effect of triaxial deformations. The BPS model is extended by
the higher-order corrections for the atomic binding, screening, exchange and
zero-point energies. The influence of the higher-order corrections on the
sequence of the outer crust is investigated.Comment: 7 page
Quantitative ultraviolet measurements on wetted thin-layer chromatography plates using a charge-coupled device camera
This paper presents the first study of the UV imaging of spots on thin-layer chromatographic plates whilst still wet with solvent. Imaging of spots of benzophenone during and after development was carried out using a charge-coupled device camera. Limits of detection were found to be 5 ng on a wetted plate and 3 ng for a dry plate and the relationship between peak area and sample loading was found to be linear in the low nanograrn range over an order of magnitude for both wet and dry modes with r(2) values > 0.99. It was found that UV measurements on wet glass-backed plates suffer from low sensitivity; however, the use of aluminium-backed plates gave increased sensitivity. The apparent absorption coefficient (epsilon(app)) of 10AU m(2) g(-1) at 254 nm is consistent with reflection of the light from the aluminium surface with a double pass through the sorbent layer, and suggests that use of aluminium-backed plates should enable monitoring of separations by UV absorbance during TLC development. Stability of bubble nuclei through Shell-Effects
We investigate the shell structure of bubble nuclei in simple
phenomenological shell models and study their binding energy as a function of
the radii and of the number of neutron and protons using Strutinsky's method.
Shell effects come about, on the one hand, by the high degeneracy of levels
with large angular momentum and, on the other, by the big energy gaps between
states with a different number of radial nodes. Shell energies down to -40 MeV
are shown to occur for certain magic nuclei. Estimates demonstrate that the
calculated shell effects for certain magic numbers of constituents are probably
large enough to produce stability against fission, alpha-, and beta-decay. No

Stratified charge rotary aircraft engine technology enablement program
The multifuel stratified charge rotary engine is discussed. A single rotor, 0.7L/40 cu in displacement, research rig engine was tested. The research rig engine was designed for operation at high speeds and pressures, combustion chamber peak pressure providing margin for speed and load excursions above the design requirement for a high is advanced aircraft engine. It is indicated that the single rotor research rig engine is capable of meeting the established design requirements of 120 kW, 8,000 RPM, 1,379 KPA BMEP. The research rig engine, when fully developed, will be a valuable tool for investigating, advanced and highly advanced technology components, and provide an understanding of the stratified charge rotary engine combustion process

Entanglement, Holography and Causal Diamonds
We argue that the degrees of freedom in a d-dimensional CFT can be
re-organized in an insightful way by studying observables on the moduli space
of causal diamonds (or equivalently, the space of pairs of timelike separated
points). This 2d-dimensional space naturally captures some of the fundamental
nonlocality and causal structure inherent in the entanglement of CFT states.
For any primary CFT operator, we construct an observable on this space, which
is defined by smearing the associated one-point function over causal diamonds.
Known examples of such quantities are the entanglement entropy of vacuum
excitations and its higher spin generalizations. We show that in holographic
CFTs, these observables are given by suitably defined integrals of dual bulk
fields over the corresponding Ryu-Takayanagi minimal surfaces. Furthermore, we
explain connections to the operator product expansion and the first law of
entanglement entropy from this unifying point of view. We demonstrate that for
small perturbations of the vacuum, our observables obey linear two-derivative
equations of motion on the space of causal diamonds. In two dimensions, the
latter is given by a product of two copies of a two-dimensional de Sitter
space. For a class of universal states, we show that the entanglement entropy
and its spin-three generalization obey nonlinear equations of motion with local
interactions on this moduli space, which can be identified with Liouville and
Toda equations, respectively. This suggests the possibility of extending the
definition of our new observables beyond the linear level more generally and in
such a way that they give rise to new dynamically interacting theories on the
moduli space of causal diamonds. Various challenges one has to face in order to

Fault detection and accommodation testing on an F100 engine in an F-15 airplane
The fault detection and accommodation (FDA) methodology for digital engine-control systems may range from simple comparisons of redundant parameters to the more complex and sophisticated observer models of the entire engine system. Evaluations of the various FDA schemes are done using analytical methods, simulation, and limited-altitude-facility testing. Flight testing of the FDA logic has been minimal because of the difficulty of inducing realistic faults in flight. A flight program was conducted to evaluate the fault detection and accommodation capability of a digital electronic engine control in an F-15 aircraft. The objective of the flight program was to induce selected faults and evaluate the resulting actions of the digital engine controller. Comparisons were made between the flight results and predictions. Several anomalies were found in flight and during the ground test. Simulation results showed that the inducement of dual pressure failures was not feasible since the FDA logic was not designed to accommodate these types of failures

The present article serves as an erratum to our paper of the same title,
which was presented and published in the KDD 2014 conference. In that article,
we claimed falsely that the objective function defined in Section 1.4 is
non-monotone submodular. We are deeply indebted to Debmalya Mandal, Jean
Pouget-Abadie and Yaron Singer for bringing to our attention a counter-example
to that claim.
Subsequent to becoming aware of the counter-example, we have shown that the
objective function is in fact NP-hard to approximate to within a factor of
for any .
In an attempt to fix the record, the present article combines the problem
motivation, models, and experimental results sections from the original
incorrect article with the new hardness result. We would like readers to only
