Drifting instabilities of cavity solitons in vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers with frequency selective feedback

In this paper we study the formation and dynamics of self-propelled cavity solitons (CSs) in a model for vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) subjected to external frequency selective feedback (FSF), and build their bifurcation diagram for the case where carrier dynamics is eliminated. For low pump currents, we find that they emerge from the modulational instability point of the trivial solution, where traveling waves with a critical wavenumber are formed. For large currents, the branch of self-propelled solitons merges with the branch of resting solitons via a pitchfork bifurcation. We also show that a feedback phase variation of 2\pi can transform a CS (whether resting or moving) into a different one associated to an adjacent longitudinal external cavity mode. Finally, we investigate the influence of the carrier dynamics, relevant for VCSELs. We find and analyze qualitative changes in the stability properties of resting CSs when increasing the carrier relaxation time. In addition to a drifting instability of resting CSs, a new kind of instability appears for certain ranges of carrier lifetime, leading to a swinging motion of the CS center position. Furthermore, for carrier relaxation times typical of VCSELs the system can display multistability of CSs.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figure

Morphogenetic diagnostics of soil formation on tailing dumps of coal quarries in Siberia

    Get PDF
Morphological diagnostics of soil-forming processes in the young soils of technogenic landscapes are considered. Comprehensive multilevel studies of soils developed on the tailings of coal mines of different age in a wide range of climatic conditions in Siberia are performed. The processes of the mineral substrate transformation predominate at the initial stages of soil formation. Then, with the development of the soil profiles, the processes of the organic matter transformation begin to play the major role, and the organoprofiles of the soils specific to the particular climatic zone are formed. Micro- and submicroscopic studies allow us to judge the character of major soil processes and to identify the features attesting to the activity of some associated processes

Thermo-optic characterization of Yb:CaGdAlO4 laser crystal

Principal thermo-optic coefficients (TOCs), dno/dT and dne/dT, are measured for Yb:CaGdAlO4 crystal, for the first time, to our knowledge. At the wavelength of ~1 μm, they equal –7.6 and –8.6 (Ч10-6 K-1), accordingly. Thermal coefficients of the optical path (TCOP) are determined for this crystal for the principal crystal cuts (a-cut and c-cut) and light polarizations (π or σ). Thermo-optic dispersion formulas are evaluated for both TOC and TCOP coefficients. Optical power of thermal lens is measured for diode-pumped a-cut Yb:CaGdAlO4; it is also calculated on the basis of measured material parameters. Thermal conductivity of CaGdAlO4 crystal is measured versus Yb concentration. The results indicate that a-cut Yb:CaGdAlO4 can provide really "athermal" behavior
