Almost Split Morphisms, Preprojective Algebras and Multiplication Maps of Maximal Rank
With a grading previously introduced by the second-named author, the
multiplication maps in the preprojective algebra satisfy a maximal rank
property that is similar to the maximal rank property proven by Hochster and
Laksov for the multiplication maps in the commutative polynomial ring. The
result follows from a more general theorem about the maximal rank property of a
minimal almost split morphism, which also yields a quadratic inequality for the
dimensions of indecomposable modules involved
Phonons in intrinsic Josephson systems with parallel magnetic field
Subgap resonances in the I-V curves of layered superconductors are explained
by the coupling between Josephson oscillations and phonons with dispersion in
c-direction. In the presence of a magnetic field applied parallel to the layers
additional structures due to fluxon motion appear. Their coupling with phonons
is investigated theoretically and a shift of the phonon resonances in strong
magnetic fields is predicted.Comment: Invited Paper to the "2nd International Symposium on Intrinsic

Development of a preprototype sabatier CO2 reduction subsystem
A preoprototype Sabatier CO2 Reduction Subsystem was successfully designed, fabricated and tested. The lightweight, quick starting reactor utilizes a highly active and physically durable methanation catalyst composed of ruthenium on alumina. The use of this improved catalyst permits a single straight through plug flow design with an average lean component H2/CO2 conversion efficiency of over 99% over a range of H2/CO2 molar ratios of 1.8 to 5 while operating with flows equivalent to a crew size of one person steadystate to 3 persons cyclical (equivalent to 5 persons steady state). The reactor requires no heater operation after start-up even during simulated 55 minute lightside/39 minute darkside orbital operation over the above range of molar ratios and crew loadings. The subsystem's operation and performance is controlled by a microprocessor and displayed on a nineteen inch multi-colored cathode ray tube
Subgap structures in the current-voltage characteristic of the intrinsic Josephson effect due to phonons
A modified RSJ-model for the coupling of intrinsic Josephson oscillations and
c-axis phonons in the high-T_c superconductors Tl_2Ba_2Ca_2Cu_3O_{10+\delta}
and Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+\delta} is deveoped. This provides a very good
explanation for recently reported subgap structures in the I-V-characteristic
of the c-axis transport. It turns out that the voltages of these structures
coincide with the eigenfrequencies of longitudinal optical phonons, providing a
new measurement technique for this quantity. The significantly enhanced
microwave emission at the subgap structures in both the GHz and THz region is
discussed.Comment: correction of minor misprints, revtex, 3 pages, two postscript

Intrinsic Tunneling in Cuprates and Manganites
The most anisotropic high temperature superconductors like Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8, as
well as the recently discovered layered manganite La1.4Sr1.6Mn2O7 are layered
metallic systems where the interlayer current transport occurs via sequential
tunneling of charge carriers. As a consequence, in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 adjacent CuO2
double layers form an intrinsic Josephson tunnel junction while in in
La1.4Sr1.6Mn2O7 tunneling of spin polarized charge carriers between adjacent
MnO2 layers leads to an intrinsic spin valve effect. We present and discuss
interlayer transport experiments for both systems. To perform the experiments
small sized mesa structures were patterned on top of single crystals of the
above materials defining stacks of a small number of intrinsic Josephson
junctions and intrinsic spin valves, respectively.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figure
Semifluxons in Superconductivity and Cold Atomic Gases
Josephson junctions and junction arrays are well studied devices in
superconductivity. With external magnetic fields one can modulate the phase in
a long junction and create traveling, solitonic waves of magnetic flux, called
fluxons. Today, it is also possible to device two different types of junctions:
depending on the sign of the critical current density, they are called 0- or
pi-junction. In turn, a 0-pi junction is formed by joining two of such
junctions. As a result, one obtains a pinned Josephson vortex of fractional
magnetic flux, at the 0-pi boundary. Here, we analyze this arrangement of
superconducting junctions in the context of an atomic bosonic quantum gas,
where two-state atoms in a double well trap are coupled in an analogous
fashion. There, an all-optical 0-pi Josephson junction is created by the phase
of a complex valued Rabi-frequency and we a derive a discrete four-mode model
for this situation, which qualitatively resembles a semifluxon.Comment: 15 pages (Latex), 6 color figures (eps
Coupling between phonons and intrinsic Josephson oscillations in cuprate superconductors
The recently reported subgap structures observed in the current-voltage
characteristic of intrinsic Josephson junctions in the high-T_c superconductors
Tl_2Ba_2Ca_2Cu_3O_{10+\delta} and Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+\delta} are explained by
the coupling between c-axis phonons and Josephson oscillations. A model is
developed where c-axis lattice vibrations between adjacent superconducting
multilayers are excited by the Josephson oscillations in a resistive junction.
The voltages of the lowest structures correspond well to the frequencies of
longitudinal c-axis phonons with large oscillator strength in the two
materials, providing a new measurement technique for this quantity.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, revtex, aps, epsf, psfig. submitted to Physical
