Examining the Connections within the Startup Ecosystem: A Case Study of St. Louis
This paper documents the resurgence of entrepreneurial activity in St. Louis by reporting on the collaboration and local learning within the startup community. This activity is happening both between entrepreneurs and between organizations that provide support, such as mentoring and funding, to entrepreneurs. As these connections deepen, the strength of the entrepreneurial ecosystem grows. Another finding from the research is that activity-based events, where entrepreneurs have the chance to use and practice the skills needed to grow their businesses, are most useful. St. Louis provides a multitude of these activities, such as Startup Weekend, 1 Million Cups, Code Until Dawn, StartLouis, and GlobalHack. Some of these are St. Louis specific, but others have nationwide or global operations, providing important implications for other cities

Effect of Corner Strength Enhancement on Shear Behaviour of Stainless Steel Lipped Channel Sections
During the cold-forming process of manufacturing, stainless steel sheets undergo plastic deformations, in particularly around corner regions of press braked sections. These plastic deformations lead to significant changes in material properties of stainless steel compared to its flat sheet properties. Consequently, yield strength and ultimate strength increments can be envisaged and this process is termed as cold working. Stainless steel exhibits significant level of strain hardening under plastic deformations. This is the main reason for these strength enhancements. In the structural design process of stainless steel sections, these strength increments are required to be considered to harness the benefits arising from it. Therefore, previous research proposed predictive models for these strength enhancements. In this context, the effect of corner strength enhancement on press-braked stainless steel lipped channel sections under shear was examined in this paper. 120 finite element models were developed. Different corner radii and section thicknesses were taken into account. Results highlighted that the effect of cold working on the shear capacity of stainless steel lipped channel sections is more significant in compact sections compared to slender sections where up to 9% increment was observed. Further analysis was conducted using 40 finite element models to highlight the inelastic reserve capacity available in compact stainless steel lipped channel sections in shear. From the results, it was concluded that when web slenderness is less than 0.25 more than 40% shear capacity increment can be achieved due to strain-hardening of stainless steel
Consumer perceptions of co-branding alliances: Organizational dissimilarity signals and brand fit
This study explores how consumers evaluate co-branding alliances between dissimilar partner firms. Customers are well aware that different firms are behind a co-branded product and observe the partner firms’ characteristics. Drawing on signaling theory, we assert that consumers use organizational characteristics as signals in their assessment of brand fit and for their purchasing decisions. Some organizational signals are beyond the control of the co-branding partners or at least they cannot alter them on short notice. We use a quasi-experimental design and test how co-branding partner dissimilarity affects brand fit perception. The results show that co-branding partner dissimilarity in terms of firm size, industry scope, and country-of-origin image negatively affects brand fit perception. Firm age dissimilarity does not exert significant influence. Because brand fit generally fosters a benevolent consumer attitude towards a co-branding alliance, the findings suggest that high partner dissimilarity may reduce overall co-branding alliance performance

The impact of early emergency department allied health intervention on admission rates in older people: a non-randomized clinical study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This study sought to determine whether early allied health intervention by a dedicated Emergency Department (ED) based team, occurring before or in parallel with medical assessment, reduces hospital admission rates amongst older patients presenting with one of ten index problems.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A prospective non-randomized trial in patients aged sixty five and over, conducted in two Australian hospital EDs. Intervention group patients, receiving early comprehensive allied health input, were compared to patients that received no allied health assessment. Propensity score matching was used to compare the two groups due to the non-randomized nature of the study. The primary outcome was admission to an inpatient hospital bed from the ED.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of five thousand two hundred and sixty five patients in the trial, 3165 were in the intervention group. The admission rate in the intervention group was 72.0% compared to 74.4% in the control group. Using propensity score probabilities of being assigned to either group in a conditional logistic regression model, this difference was of borderline statistical significance (<it>p </it>= 0.046, OR 0.88 (0.76-1.00)). On subgroup analysis the admission rate in patients with musculoskeletal symptoms and angina pectoris was less for those who received allied health intervention versus those who did not. This difference was significant.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Early allied health intervention in the ED has a significant but modest impact on admission rates in older patients. The effect appears to be limited to a small number of common presenting problems.</p
The Cytosolic Domain of Fis1 Binds and Reversibly Clusters Lipid Vesicles
Every lipid membrane fission event involves the association of two apposing bilayers, mediated by proteins that can promote membrane curvature, fusion and fission. We tested the hypothesis that Fis1, a tail-anchored protein involved in mitochondrial and peroxisomal fission, promotes changes in membrane structure. We found that the cytosolic domain of Fis1 alone binds lipid vesicles, which is enhanced upon protonation and increasing concentrations of anionic phospholipids. Fluorescence and circular dichroism data indicate that the cytosolic domain undergoes a membrane-induced conformational change that buries two tryptophan side chains upon membrane binding. Light scattering and electron microscopy data show that membrane binding promotes lipid vesicle clustering. Remarkably, this vesicle clustering is reversible and vesicles largely retain their original shape and size. This raises the possibility that the Fis1 cytosolic domain might act in membrane fission by promoting a reversible membrane association, a necessary step in membrane fission

Angel investor's selection criteria: a comparative institutional perspective
Despite the important role of angel investors as critical financial providers for new ventures, little is known regarding how institutions make their investment decisions. While angels make decisions based on selection criteria during the first stage, they are also embedded within and affected by different institutional settings and as a result weight these criteria differently than other investors. We compare angel investors' selection criteria in China and Denmark using the comparative institutional perspective. We use a policy capturing approach and hierarchy linear modeling, revealing that since Chinese angels are embedded within relationship-based institutional settings they tend to reply more on strong ties such as family and friends in management team, as well as weighting risks less compared to Danish angels operating within more rule-based institutional contexts
