Excess science accommodation capabilities and excess performance capabilities assessment for Mars Geoscience and Climatology Orbiter: Extended study

Evidence that widespread star formation may be underway in G0.253+016, "The Brick"
Image cubes of differential column density as a function of dust temperature
are constructed for Galactic Centre molecular cloud G0.253+0.016 ("The Brick")
using the recently described PPMAP procedure. The input data consist of
continuum images from the Herschel Space Telescope in the wavelength range
70-500 m, supplemented by previously published interferometric data at 1.3
mm wavelength. While the bulk of the dust in the molecular cloud is consistent
with being heated externally by the local interstellar radiation field, our
image cube shows the presence, near one edge of the cloud, of a filamentary
structure whose temperature profile suggests internal heating. The structure
appears as a cool ( K) tadpole-like feature, pc in length, in
which is embedded a thin spine of much hotter ( 40-50 K) material. We
interpret these findings in terms of a cool filament whose hot central region
is undergoing gravitational collapse and fragmentation to form a line of
protostars. If confirmed, this would represent the first evidence of widespread

Communications network design and costing model technical manual
This computer model provides the capability for analyzing long-haul trunking networks comprising a set of user-defined cities, traffic conditions, and tariff rates. Networks may consist of all terrestrial connectivity, all satellite connectivity, or a combination of terrestrial and satellite connectivity. Network solutions provide the least-cost routes between all cities, the least-cost network routing configuration, and terrestrial and satellite service cost totals. The CNDC model allows analyses involving three specific FCC-approved tariffs, which are uniquely structured and representative of most existing service connectivity and pricing philosophies. User-defined tariffs that can be variations of these three tariffs are accepted as input to the model and allow considerable flexibility in network problem specification. The resulting model extends the domain of network analysis from traditional fixed link cost (distance-sensitive) problems to more complex problems involving combinations of distance and traffic-sensitive tariffs

Effective one-component description of two-component Bose-Einstein condensate dynamics
We investigate dynamics in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates in the
context of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations and derive results for the
evolution of the total density fluctuations. Using these results, we show how,
in many cases of interest, the dynamics can be accurately described with an
effective one-component Gross-Pitaevskii equation for one of the components,
with the trap and interaction coefficients determined by the relative
differences in the scattering lengths. We discuss the model in various regimes,
where it predicts breathing excitations, and the formation of vector solitons.
An effective nonlinear evolution is predicted for some cases of current
experimental interest. We then apply the model to construct quasi-stationary

FORTEST: Formal methods and testing
Formal methods have traditionally been used for specification and development of software. However there are potential benefits for the testing stage as well. The panel session associated with this paper explores the usefulness
or otherwise of formal methods in various contexts for improving software testing. A number of different possibilities for the use of formal methods are explored and questions raised. The contributors are all members of the UK FORTEST Network on formal methods and testing. Although
the authors generally believe that formal methods
are useful in aiding the testing process, this paper is intended to provoke discussion. Dissenters are encouraged to put their views to the panel or individually to the authors
Collective excitations of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates
We apply linear-response analysis of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation to obtain
the excitation frequencies of a Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a
time-averaged orbiting potential trap. Our calculated values are in excellent

H-NMR spin-echo measurements of the static and dynamic spin properties in -(BETS)FeCl
H-NMR spin-echo measurements of the spin-echo decay with a
decay rate 1/ and the frequency shift under applied
magnetic field = 9 T along the a-axis over a temperature
range 2.0180 K are reported for a single crystal of the organic conductor
-(BETS)FeCl. It provides the spin dynamic and static
properties in the paramagnetic metal (PM) and antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI)
states as well as across the PMAFI phase transition. A large slow beat
structure in the spin-echo decay is observed with a typical beat frequency of
7 kHz and it varies across the spectrum. Its origin is attributed to
the HH dipole interactions rather than to the much larger
dipolar field contribution from the Fe electrons (spin = 5/2). A
simple phenomenological model provides an excellent fit to the data. The
dominant H-NMR frequency shift comes from the dipolar field from the 3d
Fe ions, and the Fe Fe exchange interactions ()
( includes the dd exchange interactions through the electrons)
have a substantial effect to the local field at the proton sites expecially at
low temperatures. A good fit is obtained with = - 1.7 K. The data of
the spin-echo decay rate 1/ indicates that there is a significant change
in the slow fluctuations of the local magnetic field at the H-sites on
traversing the PM to AFI phase. This evidence supports earlier reports that the
PMAFI phase transition in -(BETS)FeCl is driven

An Ecological Study of the Lagoons Surrounding the John F. Kennedy Space Center, Brevard County, Florida
The studies reported here are the result of a three year effort to define the major biological, microbiological, chemical and geological characteristics of the water of the Indian River lagoon around the Kennedy Space Center and to determine the movements of those waters within and between the various basins. This work was the result of a jointly funded agreement between the Florida Institute of Technology and John F. Kennedy Space Center, NASA under NASA Grant NGR 10-015-008, dated April 11, 1972. This cost sharing grant was renewed for each of two successive years. Sampling operations were terminated August 31, 1975
