    Spectroscopy of a Globular Cluster in the Local Group dIrr NGC 6822

    We present low-resolution Keck spectroscopy for the globular cluster H VIII in the Local Group dIrr galaxy NGC 6822. We find the metallicity of the cluster to be [Fe/H]= -1.58 +/- 0.28 and the age of the cluster to be 3-4 Gyr, slightly older than but consistent with previous age estimates. H VIII seems to be more metal-poor than most intermediate-age globular clusters in the Local Group, and appears most similar to the anomalous Small Magellanic Cloud clusters Lindsay 113 and NGC 339.Comment: 5 pages, including 3 figures.     Pit latrines and their impacts on groundwater quality: a systematic review.

    BackgroundPit latrines are one of the most common human excreta disposal systems in low-income countries, and their use is on the rise as countries aim to meet the sanitation-related target of the Millennium Development Goals. There is concern, however, that discharges of chemical and microbial contaminants from pit latrines to groundwater may negatively affect human health.ObjectivesOur goals were to a) calculate global pit latrine coverage, b) systematically review empirical studies of the impacts of pit latrines on groundwater quality, c) evaluate latrine siting standards, and d) identify knowledge gaps regarding the potential for and consequences of groundwater contamination by latrines.MethodsWe used existing survey and population data to calculate global pit latrine coverage. We reviewed the scientific literature on the occurrence of contaminants originating from pit latrines and considered the factors affecting transport of these contaminants. Data were extracted from peer-reviewed articles, books, and reports identified using Web of ScienceSM, PubMed, Google, and document reference lists.DiscussionWe estimated that approximately 1.77 billion people use pit latrines as their primary means of sanitation. Studies of pit latrines and groundwater are limited and have generally focused on only a few indicator contaminants. Although groundwater contamination is frequently observed downstream of latrines, contaminant transport distances, recommendations based on empirical studies, and siting guidelines are variable and not well aligned with one another.ConclusionsIn order to improve environmental and human health, future research should examine a larger set of contextual variables, improve measurement approaches, and develop better criteria for siting pit latrines

    Dynamical parameter estimation using realistic photodetection

    We investigate the effect of imperfections in realistic detectors upon the problem of quantum state and parameter estimation by continuous monitoring of an open quantum system. Specifically, we have reexamined the system of a two-level atom with an unknown Rabi frequency introduced by Gambetta and Wiseman [Phys. Rev. A 64, 042105 (2001)]. We consider only direct photodetection and use the realistic quantum trajectory theory reported by Warszawski, Wiseman, and Mabuchi [Phys. Rev. A 65, 023802 (2002)]. The most significant effect comes from a finite bandwidth, corresponding to an uncertainty in the response time of the photodiode. Unless the bandwidth is significantly greater than the Rabi frequency, the observer's ability to obtain information about the unknown Rabi frequency, and about the state of the atom, is severely compromised. This result has implications for quantum control in the presence of unknown parameters for realistic detectors, and even for ideal detectors, as it implies that most of the information in the measurement record is contained in the precise timing of the detections.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

    The Giant Branches of Open and Globular Clusters in the Infrared as Metallicity Indicators: A Comparison with Theory

    We apply the giant branch slope-[Fe/H] relation derived by Kuchinski et al. [AJ, 109, 1131 (1995)] to a sample of open clusters. We find that the slope of the giant branch in K vs. (J-K) color-magnitude diagrams correlates with [Fe/H] for open clusters as it does for metal-rich globular clusters but that the open cluster data are systematically shifted to less negative values of giant branch slope, at constant [Fe/H]. We use isochrone models to examine the theoretical basis for this relationship and find that for a given value of [Fe/H], the slope of the relationship remains constant with decreasing population age but the relation shifts to less negative values of giant branch slope with decreasing age. Both of these theoretical predictions agree with the trends found in the data. Finally, we derive new coefficients for the giant branch slope-[Fe/H] relation for specific members of 3 populations, metal-rich globular clusters, bulge stars and open clusters.Comment: 16 pages including 3 figures (AASTEX), AJ Accepted, also available at http://www.astronomy.ohio-state.edu/~martini/pubs.htm
