Measurement of the Branching Fractions for D^0 â Ï^-e^+v_e and D^0 â + K^-e^+V_e and Determination of âV_(cd)/V_(cs)â^2
Measurements of the exclusive branching fractions B(D^0âÏ^-e^+Îœ_e) and B(D^0âK^-e^+Îœ_e), using data collected at the Ï(3770) with the Mark III detector at the SLAC e^+e^- storage ring SPEAR, are used to determine the ratio of the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements âV_(cd)/V_(cs)â^2 =0.057_(-0.015)^(+0.038)±0.005
Search for the decay D^0âK^0e^+e^-
A search for the decay of the charmed meson D^0âK^0e^+e^- is presented, based on data collected at the Ï(3770) resonance with the Mark III detector at the SLAC storage ring SPEAR. No evidence for this process is found, resulting in an upper limit on the decay branching ratio of 1.7Ă10^(-3) at the 90% confidence level
Analysis of hadronic invariant mass spectrum in inclusive charmless semileptonic B decays
We make an analysis of the hadronic invariant mass spectrum in inclusive
charmless semileptonic B meson decays in a QCD-based approach. The decay width
is studied as a function of the invariant mass cut. We examine their
sensitivities to the parameters of the theory. The theoretical uncertainties in
the determination of from the hadronic invariant mass spectrum are
investigated. A strategy for improving the theoretical accuracy in the value of
is described.Comment: 13 pages, 5 Postscript figure
An algorithmic approach to the existence of ideal objects in commutative algebra
The existence of ideal objects, such as maximal ideals in nonzero rings,
plays a crucial role in commutative algebra. These are typically justified
using Zorn's lemma, and thus pose a challenge from a computational point of
view. Giving a constructive meaning to ideal objects is a problem which dates
back to Hilbert's program, and today is still a central theme in the area of
dynamical algebra, which focuses on the elimination of ideal objects via
syntactic methods. In this paper, we take an alternative approach based on
Kreisel's no counterexample interpretation and sequential algorithms. We first
give a computational interpretation to an abstract maximality principle in the
countable setting via an intuitive, state based algorithm. We then carry out a
concrete case study, in which we give an algorithmic account of the result that
in any commutative ring, the intersection of all prime ideals is contained in
its nilradical
Long distance effects in weak radiative decays of D-mesons
We present a detailed analysis of the transitions, using a
model which combines heavy quark effective theory and the chiral Lagrangian
approach and includes symmetry breaking. We notice that in addition to the
previously considered s - channel annihilation and t - channel W - exchange,
there is a long distance penguin - like contribution in the t
- channel of Cabibbo - suppressed modes. Its magnitude is determined by the
size of symmetry breaking which we calculate with a vector dominance approach.
Although smaller in magnitude, the penguin - like contribution would lead to
sizeable effects in case of cancellations among the other contributions to the
amplitude. Thus, it may invalidate suggested tests for beyond the standard
model effects in these decays. We also indicate the range of expectations for
the branching ratios of various modes.Comment: 28 pages, Latex, 2 Figure
Comparative Effectiveness of a Technology-Facilitated Depression Care Management Model in Safety-Net Primary Care Patients With Type 2 Diabetes: 6-Month Outcomes of a Large Clinical Trial.
BACKGROUND: Comorbid depression is a significant challenge for safety-net primary care systems. Team-based collaborative depression care is effective, but complex system factors in safety-net organizations impede adoption and result in persistent disparities in outcomes. Diabetes-Depression Care-management Adoption Trial (DCAT) evaluated whether depression care could be significantly improved by harnessing information and communication technologies to automate routine screening and monitoring of patient symptoms and treatment adherence and allow timely communication with providers.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare 6-month outcomes of a technology-facilitated care model with a usual care model and a supported care model that involved team-based collaborative depression care for safety-net primary care adult patients with type 2 diabetes.
METHODS: DCAT is a translational study in collaboration with Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, the second largest safety-net care system in the United States. A comparative effectiveness study with quasi-experimental design was conducted in three groups of adult patients with type 2 diabetes to compare three delivery models: usual care, supported care, and technology-facilitated care. Six-month outcomes included depression and diabetes care measures and patient-reported outcomes. Comparative treatment effects were estimated by linear or logistic regression models that used generalized propensity scores to adjust for sampling bias inherent in the nonrandomized design.
RESULTS: DCAT enrolled 1406 patients (484 in usual care, 480 in supported care, and 442 in technology-facilitated care), most of whom were Hispanic or Latino and female. Compared with usual care, both the supported care and technology-facilitated care groups were associated with significant reduction in depressive symptoms measured by scores on the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (least squares estimate, LSE: usual care=6.35, supported care=5.05, technology-facilitated care=5.16; P value: supported care vs usual care=.02, technology-facilitated care vs usual care=.02); decreased prevalence of major depression (odds ratio, OR: supported care vs usual care=0.45, technology-facilitated care vs usual care=0.33; P value: supported care vs usual care=.02, technology-facilitated care vs usual care=.007); and reduced functional disability as measured by Sheehan Disability Scale scores (LSE: usual care=3.21, supported care=2.61, technology-facilitated care=2.59; P value: supported care vs usual care=.04, technology-facilitated care vs usual care=.03). Technology-facilitated care was significantly associated with depression remission (technology-facilitated care vs usual care: OR=2.98, P=.04); increased satisfaction with care for emotional problems among depressed patients (LSE: usual care=3.20, technology-facilitated care=3.70; P=.05); reduced total cholesterol level (LSE: usual care=176.40, technology-facilitated care=160.46; P=.01); improved satisfaction with diabetes care (LSE: usual care=4.01, technology-facilitated care=4.20; P=.05); and increased odds of taking an glycated hemoglobin test (technology-facilitated care vs usual care: OR=3.40, P\u3c.001).
CONCLUSIONS: Both the technology-facilitated care and supported care delivery models showed potential to improve 6-month depression and functional disability outcomes. The technology-facilitated care model has a greater likelihood to improve depression remission, patient satisfaction, and diabetes care quality
Estradiol and testosterone levels in patients undergoing partial hepatectomy - A possible signal for hepatic regeneration?
In five adult male patients undergoing a 40-60% partial hepatectomy, serum sex hormone levels before and after hepatic resection were determined. Blood was drawn immediately prior to each surgical procedure and at specified time points postoperatively. Compared to hormone levels found prior to surgery, following major hepatic resection, estradiol levels increase at 24 and 48 hr, while testosterone levels decline, being significantly reduced at 96 and 144 hr. These data demonstrate that adult males who undergo a 40-60% partial hepatectomy experience alterations in their sex hormone levels similar to those observed in male rats following a 70% hepatectomy. These changes in sex hormone levels have been associated in animals with an alteration of the sex hormone receptor status of the liver that is thought to participate in the initiation of the regenerative response. These studies suggest, but do not prove, that in man, as in the case of the rat, sex hormones may participate in the initiation of or at least modulate in part the regenerative response that occurs following a major hepatic resection. © 1989 Plenum Publishing Corporation
Quantum value indefiniteness
The indeterministic outcome of a measurement of an individual quantum is
certified by the impossibility of the simultaneous, definite, deterministic
pre-existence of all conceivable observables from physical conditions of that
quantum alone. We discuss possible interpretations and consequences for quantum
oracles.Comment: 19 pages, 2 tables, 2 figures; contribution to PC0
First Constraints on the Ultra-High Energy Neutrino Flux from a Prototype Station of the Askaryan Radio Array
The Askaryan Radio Array (ARA) is an ultra-high energy ( eV) cosmic
neutrino detector in phased construction near the South Pole. ARA searches for
radio Cherenkov emission from particle cascades induced by neutrino
interactions in the ice using radio frequency antennas ( MHz)
deployed at a design depth of 200 m in the Antarctic ice. A prototype ARA
Testbed station was deployed at m depth in the 2010-2011 season and
the first three full ARA stations were deployed in the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013
seasons. We present the first neutrino search with ARA using data taken in 2011
and 2012 with the ARA Testbed and the resulting constraints on the neutrino
flux from eV.Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures. Since first revision, added section on
