Making the business case? Intercultural differences in framing economic rationality related to environmental issues

    Get PDF
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to challenge the assumptions prominent in the Anglo-American context that the objective of a business is to increase its profits or/and that managers have to make 'the business case' in order to implement environmentally sounder solutions or other sustainability considerations into their business decisions. The paper argues that these assumptions are not presented as a human construction or agreement, instead they are treated as though they are a given, a prerequisite to a business system. By comparing qualitative statements in a cross-cultural study the paper highlights different ways in which economic rationality could be conceptualised

Fundamental Flaws in Feller's Classical Derivation of Benford's Law

    Get PDF
Feller's classic text 'An Introduction to Probability Theory and its Applications' contains a derivation of the well known significant-digit law called Benford's law. More specifically, Feller gives a sufficient condition ("large spread") for a random variable XX to be approximately Benford distributed, that is, for log10X\log_{10}X to be approximately uniformly distributed modulo one. This note shows that the large-spread derivation, which continues to be widely cited and used, contains serious basic errors. Concrete examples and a new inequality clearly demonstrate that large spread (or large spread on a logarithmic scale) does not imply that a random variable is approximately Benford distributed, for any reasonable definition of "spread" or measure of dispersionComment: 7 page

Computer program for predicting symmetric jet mixing of compressible flow in jets

    Get PDF
Finite-difference computer program has been developed for treating mixing of two parallel and compressible air streams; one of them may be supersonic. This development is restricted to symmetric jet mixing in which high-speed jet is located on axis of channel and no provision is made for blowing or suction along channel walls

Knots with distinct primitive/primitive and primitive/Seifert representatives

Berge introduced knots that are primitive/primitive with respect to the genus 2 Heegaard surface, FF, in S3S^3; surgery on such knots at the surface slope yields a lens space. Later Dean described a similar class of knots that are primitive/Seifert with respect to FF; surgery on these knots at the surface slope yields a Seifert fibered space. Here we construct a two-parameter family of knots that have distinct primitive/Seifert embeddings in FF with the same surface slope, as well as a family of torus knots that have a primitive/primitive representative and a primitive/Seifert representative with the same surface slope.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures; 2 figures update

    Kinesthetic control simulator

    Get PDF
A kinesthetic control simulator is reported that has a flat base upon which rests a support structure having a lower spherical surface for rotation on the base plate with columns which support a platform above the support structure at a desired location with respect to the center of curvature of the spherical surface. A handrail is at approximately the elevation of the hips of the operator above the platform with a ring attached to the support structure which may be used to limit the angle of tilt. Five degree freedom-of-motion can be obtained by utilizing an air pad structure for support of the control simulator
