    Fibre imaging bundles for full-field optical coherence tomography

    An imaging fibre bundle is incorporated into a full-field imaging OCT system, with the aim of eliminating the mechanical scanning currently required at the probe tip in endoscopic systems. Each fibre within the imaging bundle addresses a Fizeau interferometer formed between the bundle end and the sample, a configuration which ensures down lead insensitivity of the probe fibres, preventing variations in sensitivity due to polarization changes in the many thousand constituent fibres. The technique allows acquisition of information across a planar region with single-shot measurement, in the form of a 2D image detected using a digital CCD camera. Depth scanning components are now confined within a processing interferometer external to the completely passive endoscope probe. The technique has been evaluated in our laboratory for test samples, and images acquired using the bundle-based system are presented. Data are displayed either as en-face scans, parallel to the sample surface, or as slices through the depth of the sample, with a spatial resolution of about 30 ï ­m. The minimum detectable reflectivity at present is estimated to be about 10-3, which is satisfactory for many inorganic samples.     What do we really know about the constraints and enablers of physical activity levels in young children?

    Ample evidence exists to support the benefits of habitual physical activity levels on long term health and well-being for adults, youth and, more recently, children. However information about factors that impact on young children’s choices to be active or inactive is limited because the accurate measurement of physical activity in young children is difficult. Consequently, many statements found in the literature about young children’s physical activity levels are not founded on empirically validated information. Some conclusions are extrapolated to younger children from findings in studies of older children. This paper is based on an extensive review of literature and the outcomes of a National Summit held in Fremantle, WA in November 2001. It seeks to identify those key early life experiences and context factors that research has confirmed create the child who is attracted to physically active play rather than sedentary play. The implications of these findings for future research and intervention programs are presented

    Risk pathways for gonorrhea acquisition in sex workers: can we distinguish confounding from an exposure effect using a priori hypotheses?

    The population distribution of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) varies broadly across settings. Although there have been many studies aiming to define subgroups at risk of infection that should be a target for prevention interventions by identifying risk factors, questions remain about how these risk factors interact, how their effects jointly influence the risk of acquisition, and their differential importance across populations. Theoretical frameworks describing the interrelationships among risk determinants are useful in directing both the design and analysis of research studies and interventions. In this article, we developed such a framework from a review looking at determinants of risk for STI acquisition, using gonorrhea as an index infection. We also propose an analysis strategy to interpret the associations found to be significant in uniform analyses of observational data. The framework and the hierarchical analysis strategy are of particular relevance in the understanding of risk formation and might prove useful in identifying determinants that are part of the causal pathway and therefore amenable to prevention strategies across populations

    Simplifying collaboration in co-located virtual environments using the active-passive approach

    The design and implementation of co-located immersive virtual environments with equal interaction possibilities for all participants is a complex topic. The main problem, on a fundamental technical level, is the difficulty of providing perspective-correct images for each participant. There is consensus that the lack of a correct perspective view will negatively affect interaction fidelity and therefore also collaboration. Several research approaches focus on providing a correct perspective view to all participants to enable co-located work. However, these approaches are usually either based on custom hardware solutions that limit the number of users with a correct perspective view or software solutions striving to eliminate or mitigate restrictions with custom image-generation approaches. In this paper we investigate an often overlooked approach to enable collaboration for multiple users in an immersive virtual environment designed for a single user. The approach provides one (active) user with a perspective-correct view while other (passive) users receive visual cues that are not perspective-correct. We used this active-passive approach to investigate the limitations posed by assigning the viewpoint to only one user. The findings of our study, though inconclusive, revealed two curiosities. First, our results suggest that the location of target geometry is an important factor to consider for designing interaction, expanding on prior work that has studied only the relation between user positions. Secondly, there seems to be only a low cost involved in accepting the limitation of providing perspective-correct images to a single user, when comparing with a baseline, during a coordinated work approach. These findings advance our understanding of collaboration in co-located virtual environments and suggest an approach to simplify co-located collaboration

    Optical coherence tomography with a Fizeau interferometer configuration

    We report the investigation of a Fizeau interferometer-based OCT system. A secondary processing interferometer is necessary in this configuration, to compensate the optical path difference formed in the Fizeau interferometer between the end of the fibre and the sample. The Fizeau configuration has the advantage of 'downlead insensitivity', which eliminates polarisation fading. An optical circulator is used in our system to route light efficiently from the source to the sample, and backscattered light from the sample and the fibre end through to the Mach-Zehnder processing interferometer. The choice of a Mach- Zehnder processing interferometer, from which both antiphase outputs are available, facilitates the incorporation of balanced detection, which often results in a large improvement in the Signal-to-Noise ratio (SNR) compared with the use of a single detector. Balanced detection comprises subtraction of the two antiphase interferometer outputs, implying that the signal amplitude is doubled and the noise is well reduced.
