Spacelab 4: Primate experiment support hardware
A squirrel monkey feeder and automatic urine collection system were designed to fly on the Spacelab 4 Shuttle Mission presently scheduled for January 1986. Prototypes of the feeder and urine collection systems were fabricated and extensively tested on squirrel monkeys at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Ames Research Center (ARC). The feeder design minimizes impact on the monkey's limited space in the cage and features improved reliability and biocompatibility over previous systems. The urine collection system is the first flight qualified, automatic urine collection device for squirrel monkeys. Flight systems are currently being fabricated
Random sequential adsorption and diffusion of dimers and k-mers on a square lattice
We have performed extensive simulations of random sequential adsorption and
diffusion of -mers, up to in two dimensions with particular attention
to the case . We focus on the behavior of the coverage and of vacancy
dynamics as a function of time. We observe that for a complete coverage
of the lattice is never reached, because of the existence of frozen
configurations that prevent isolated vacancies in the lattice to join. From
this result we argue that complete coverage is never attained for any value of
. The long time behavior of the coverage is not mean field and nonanalytic,
with as leading term. Long time coverage regimes are independent of
the initial conditions while strongly depend on the diffusion probability and
deposition rate and, in particular, different values of these parameters lead
to different final values of the coverage. The geometrical complexity of these
systems is also highlighted through an investigation of the vacancy population
dynamics.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, to be published in the Journal of Chemical

Interaction of Fluorescent Probes with Sirtuin Proteins
Sirtuins are a class of proteins belonging to the Sir2 (Silencing information regulator 2) family of NAD+ dependent protein lysine deacylases. Different Isoforms (SIRT1-SIRT7) differ in their specific deacylase activity and cellular location. They have roles in DNA repair, glucose metabolism, and cellular proliferation which make them highly desirable targets for carcinoma therapeutics. We previously used 1-aminoanthracene’s (AMA) fluorescent properties when bound with SIRT2 (Kd of 37 μM) to develop a high-throughput screen to identify novel ligands that inhibit SIRT2’s enzymatic activities. We hope to reveal other potential probes for future high-throughput screening with all the sirtuin isotopes. 1-AMA’s fluorescence along with fluorescent labeled peptides “Cy3-PEG4-H4K16(myr)” and “FAM-PEG4-H4K16(myr)” were used in binding assays to determine their affinities with SIRT2, SIRT3, and SIRT6. Further, we determined 1-AMA’s ability to bind sirtuin isoforms when they were equilibrated with 100 μM of various acyl-peptides. 1-AMA displays weak binding to SIRT3 and SIRT6 when compared to SIRT2. FAM-PEG4-H4K16(myr) binds SIRT2 with a Kd of 7nM which is much higher than its interaction with SIRT3 and SIRT6 (Kd of 6 μM and 2 μM, respectively). Cy3-PEG4-H4K16(myr) binds as expected SIRT2,3,6 although its affinity for SIRT6 changes minimally with the addition of ADP-ribose, which suggests Cy3 may facilitate binding in the absence of SIRT6’s co-factor. Future work will test additional probes with the other sirtuin proteins and establish their competency to be utilized for high-throughput screening
Analysis of ground-based differential imager performance
In the context of extrasolar planet direct detection, we evaluated the
performance of differential imaging with ground-based telescopes. This study
was carried out in the framework of the VLT-Planet Finder project and is
further extended to the case of Extremely Large Telescopes. Our analysis is
providing critical specifications for future instruments mostly in terms of
phase aberrations but also regarding alignments of the instrument optics or
offset pointing on the coronagraph. It is found that Planet Finder projects on
8m class telescopes can be successful at detecting Extrasolar Giant Planets
providing phase aberrations, alignments and pointing are accurately controlled.
The situation is more pessimistic for the detection of terrestrial planets with
Extremely Large Telescopes for which phase aberrations must be lowered at a
very challenging level
Stretched exponential relaxation in a diffusive lattice model
We studied the single dimer dynamics in a lattice diffusive model as a
function of particle density in the high densification regime. The mean square
displacement is found to be subdiffusive both in one and two dimensions. The
spatial dependence of the self part of the van Hove correlation function
displays as function of a single peak and signals a dramatic slow down of
the system for high density. The self intermediate scattering function is
fitted to the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts law. The exponent extracted
from the fits is density independent while the relaxation time follows a
scaling law with an exponent 2.5.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Hydro-geomorphological modelling of ash-fall pyroclastic soils for debris flow initiation and groundwater recharge in Campania (southern Italy)
Carbonate mountain ranges surrounding volcanic centers in the Campania region of southern Italy are covered by discontinuous ash-fall pyroclastic deposits of variable thicknesses. The cover thickness and stratigraphy are relevant to hydrological controls on both rainfall-induced landslides and groundwater recharge. To improve understanding of the hydrologic regimes within the pyroclastic soil mantle, a hydrological monitoring station was installed upslope of a debris flow source area in the Sarno Mountains. Monitoring results demonstrate consistently unsaturated conditions, strong seasonal and inter-annual variations in pressure head, and delayed and damped dynamics at different depths related to rainfall and evapotranspiration patterns. Frequencies of recorded pressure head time series were analyzed to quantify the seasonal hydrological regime of the cover as a whole, as well as variations within individual soil horizons. For the whole ash-fall pyroclastic soil cover, variable seasonal frequencies of pressure head were recognized exceeding landslide alert and groundwater recharge threshold values. Analysis of frequencies for individual soil horizons showed a strongly delayed timing determining in winter and summer an opposite hydrological behavior between the shallowest and deepest soil horizons. A model that accounts for topographic variations in cover thickness and these hydrological regimes is proposed to quantify hydro-geomorphological controls on debris flows triggering and groundwater recharge. The model is based on the estimation of ash-fall pyroclastic soil thickness along slopes by the total thickness fallen in a given area and an inverse relationship with slope angle, allowing the assessment at the distributed scale over peri-volcanic mountainous areas. Moreover, it links the spatially variable thicknesses of ash-fall pyroclastic soils to the amount of soil water storage allowing the assessment of frequency of hydrological conditions leading to debris flow initiation and groundwater recharge
Nonthermal hard X-ray excess in the cluster Abell 2256 from two epoch observations
After confirmation of the presence of a nonthermal hard X-ray excess with
respect to the thermal emission in the Coma cluster from two independent
observations, obtained using the Phoswich Detection System onboard BeppoSAX, we
present in this Letter also for Abell 2256 the results of two observations
performed with a time interval of about 2.5 yr. In both spectra a nonthermal
excess is present at a confidence level of ~3.3sigma and ~3.7sigma,
respectively. The combined spectrum obtained by adding up the two spectra
allows to measure an excess at the level of ~4.8sigma in the 20-80 keV energy
range. The nonthermal X-ray flux is in agreement with the published value of
the first observation (Fusco-Femiano et al. 2000) and with that measured by a
Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer observation (Rephaeli & Gruber 2003).Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, 1 table - ApJL, in pres
Engineering geological 3D modeling and geotechnical characterization in the framework of technical rules for geotechnical design: the case study of the Nola’s logistic plant (southern Italy)
model is an essential step to optimize costs of the construction and limit risks from failure or damage due to unforeseen ground conditions. The modeling of ground conditions is a challenging issue to be tackled especially in the case of geological units with complex geometries and spatially variable geotechnical properties. In such a direction, coupled geological and geotechnical criteria are usually adopted to define engineering geological units.
These concepts are considered by the current technical rules for geotechnical design such as the Eurocode 7 and in the national regulations which have followed it, known in Italy as “Norme Tecniche per le Costruzioni (NTC).” Notwithstanding this advanced regulatory framework, no comprehensive indications on methodological approaches were given for the 3D engineering geological modeling and geotechnical characterization of a design and construction site. In this paper, the case study of the highly heterogeneous and heteropic pyroclastic-alluvial stratigraphic setting of the Nola plain (Campania, southern Italy) characterizing the site of the Nola’s logistic plant is dealt with. The approaches are based on the engineering geological modeling analysis of a high number of stratigraphic, laboratory and in situ geotechnical data, collected for the design of the plant, and the use of a specialized modeling software providing advanced capabilities in spatial modeling of geological and geotechnical information, as well as in their visual representation. The results obtained, including also the analysis of statistical variability of geotechnical properties and the identification of representative geotechnical values, can be potentially considered a methodological approach, consistent with the current technical rules for geotechnical design as
well as with fundamental concepts of engineering geological modeling and mapping
