The present research analyzes the jurisprudence of the italian Constitutional Court regarding the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. Since the decisions n\ub0 348 and 349 of 2007 the Constitutional Court assures a stronger incidence of the international treaties on the italian law system, this study aims to underline the critical points and the possible consequences of this situation, suggesting alternatives and correctives
Effect of dietary supplementation with malt extracts on milk production
The transition period of a cow is characterized by marked changes in metabolism as the cow prepares for parturition and lactogenesis. Aim of the present study was the evaluation of the effect of feeding dairy cows with malt extracts on milk production. Ten days before calving, 22 multiparous Holstein dairy cows were divided in two groups and received for four months the same base diet added with an experimental concentrate (1.5 kg/cow/day) containing either corn starch and malt extracts (ME) or only corn starch (CS) as the main energy source. Dry matter intake was not influenced by treatment and averaged 21.7 kg of DM/cow/day. The use of malt extracts determined a numerical increase of milk yield (+0.7 kg/cow/day, i.e. +2.5%) but this difference did not reach the significance level. Milk quality parameters were not influenced by treatment. Further studies will be needed to assess if feeding diets rich in very high fermentable carbohydrates to transition dairy cows can be a valuable strateg
Aerodynamic characterization of hypersonic transportation systems and its impact on mission analysis
This paper aims to provide technical insights on the aerodynamic characterization activities performed in the field of the H2020 STRATOFLY project, for the Mach 8 waverider reference configuration. Considering the complexity of the configuration to be analyzed at conceptual/preliminary design stage, a build-up approach has been adopted. The complexity of the aerodynamic model increases incrementally, from the clean external configuration up to the complete configuration, including propulsion systems elements and flight control surfaces. At each step, the aerodynamic analysis is complemented with detailed mission analysis, in which the different versions of the aerodynamic databases are used as input for the trajectory simulation. eventually, once the contribution to the aerodynamic characterization of flight control surfaces is evaluated, stability and trim analysis is carried out. The comparison of the results obtained through the different mission analysis campaigns clearly shows that the accuracy of aerodynamic characterization may determine the feasibility or unfeasibility of a mission concept
Vitamin K effects in human health: new insights beyond bone and cardiovascular health
Vitamin K is a cofactor for the function of the enzyme \u3b3-glutamyl carboxylase, necessary for the activation of multiple vitamin K dependent-proteins. Vitamin K dependent-proteins (VKDPs) have important roles in bone health, vascular health, metabolism, reproduction as well as in cancer progression. Vitamin K deficiency is common in different conditions, including kidney disease, and it may influence the activity of VKDPs. This review discusses vitamin K status in human health and the physiologic and pathologic roles of VKDPs, beyond the established effects in skeletal and cardiovascular health
Heterosexual, gay, and lesbian people’s reactivity to virtual caresses on their embodied avatars’ taboo zones
Embodying an artificial agent through immersive virtual reality (IVR) may lead to feeling vicariously somatosensory stimuli on one’s body which are in fact never delivered. To explore whether vicarious touch in IVR reflects the basic individual and social features of real-life interpersonal interactions we tested heterosexual men/women and gay men/lesbian women reacting subjectively and physiologically to the observation of a gender-matched virtual body being touched on intimate taboo zones (like genitalia) by male and female avatars. All participants rated as most erogenous caresses on their embodied avatar taboo zones. Crucially, heterosexual men/women and gay men/lesbian women rated as most erogenous taboo touches delivered by their opposite and same gender avatar, respectively. Skin conductance was maximal when taboo touches were delivered by female avatars. Our study shows that IVR may trigger realistic experiences and ultimately allow the direct exploration of sensitive societal and individual issues that can otherwise be explored only through imagination
Life-Cycle Cost Estimation for High-Speed Vehicles: from the engineers’ to the airline’s perspective
This paper aims at upgrading the holistic Cost Estimation methodology for High-Speed
Vehicles already developed by Politecnico di Torino and the European Space Agency (ESA)
to encompass different stakeholders’ perspectives. In details, the presented methodology
combines International Air Transport Association (IATA) best practices with a detailed Life-
Cycle Cost (LCC) assessment, which includes the evaluation of Research, Development, Test
and Evaluation (RDTE) Costs, Production costs and of Direct and Indirect Operating Costs
(DOC and IOC). The integrated approach allows to further extend the capabilities of the inhouse
developed HyCost tool to support all the actors of the product value-chain (including
engineers, manufacturers, airlines and customers) in assessing the economic sustainability of
a newly under-development high-speed vehicle. However, considering the need of providing
all these cost analyses perspectives since the early design stages, the derived Cost Estimation
Relationships are mainly derived on statistical bases. To cope with the uncertainties that affect
the initial statistical population and consequently, the CERs, this paper presents each cost
item together with the estimation of related prediction intervals. Finally, results of the
application of the upgraded cost estimation methodology and of the upgraded tool to the
LAPCAT MR2.4 high-speed civil transport are reported and discussed
Feeding dehydrated alfalfa increases polyunsaturated fatty acids concentration in Marchigiana beef muscle
Beef meat is a low fat food (<5% fat). However, the fatty acid composition of beef is relatively saturated (approximately 45-50%). The polyunsaturated/saturated fatty acids (P/S) ratio in beef is approximately 0.1, the ideal being about 0.4 (Department of Health, 1994). This can cause critical comments to beef meat related to human health
Chitosan-based hydrogel to support the paracrine activity of mesenchymal stem cells in spinal cord injury treatment
Abstract Advanced therapies which combine cells with biomaterial-based carriers are recognized as an emerging and powerful method to treat challenging diseases, such as spinal cord injury (SCI). By enhancing transplanted cell survival and grafting, biomimetic hydrogels can be properly engineered to encapsulate cells and locate them at the injured site in a minimally invasive way. In this work, chitosan (CS) based hydrogels were developed to host mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), since their paracrine action can therapeutically enhance the SC regeneration, limiting the formation of a glial scar and reducing cell death at the injured site. An injectable and highly permeable CS-based hydrogel was fabricated having a rapid gelation upon temperature increase from 0 to 37 °C. CS was selected as former material both for its high biocompatibility that guarantees the proper environment for MSCs survival and for its ability to provide anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant cues. MSCs were mixed with the hydrogel solution prior to gelation. MSC viability was not affected by the CS hydrogel and encapsulated MSCs were able to release MSC-vesicles as well as to maintain their anti-oxidant features. Finally, preliminary in vivo tests on SCI mice revealed good handling of the CS solution loading MSCs during implantation and high encapsulated MSCs survival after 7 days
Tribological properties of room temperature fluorinated graphite heat-treated under fluorine atmosphere
This work is concerned with the study of the tribologic properties of room temperature fluorinated graphite heat-treated under fluorine atmosphere. The fluorinated compounds all present good intrinsic friction properties (friction coefficient in the range 0.05–0.09). The tribologic performances are optimized if the materials present remaining graphitic domains (influenced by the presence of intercalated fluorinated species) whereas the perfluorinated compounds, where the fluorocarbon layers are corrugated (armchair configuration of the saturated carbon rings) present higher friction coefficients. Raman analyses reveal that the friction process induces severe changes in the materials structure especially the partial re-building of graphitic domains in the case of perfluorinated compounds which explains the improvement of μ during the friction tests for these last materials
