Spiral Growth Manufacturing (SGM) – A Continuous Additive Manufacturing Technology for Processing Metal Powder by Selective Laser Melting

Spiral growth manufacturing is a new innovative powder based rapid manufacturing technique. The innovation exists in the methodology in which powder layers are deposited. Unlike other pre-placed powder systems, the deposited layers move relative to the location at which they are processed. This is made possible by a rotating build drum into which powder is deposited, in spiralled layers, from a stationary hopper. With this configuration powder can be continuously deposited and levelled and simultaneously processed, eliminating delays in the build cycle. Stainless steel and cobalt-chrome powder is selectively melted using a 100W flash lamp pumped Nd:YAG laser. This paper reports on factors affecting build rate and on build strategies for creating a number of axis-symmetric thin and thick walled cylinders. Experimental results suggest that build rate for thin walled structures bonded to a substrate will ultimately be governed by tangential movements of the powder particles when frictional forces are not sufficient to accelerate the particles along a curved path, provided that enough laser power is available for melting. Using infrared spectral features to probe circumstellar dust shells around cool stars

IRAS observations of cool stars provide low resolution spectra in the mid-infrared and also give fluxes at four wavelength bands from which color-color diagrams are constructed. The later have been used to study the evolution of these stars: as an O-rich star evolves to become a C-rich star and its detached dust shell moves further away, its evolution can be tracked on a color-color diagram. A major factor in determining the position of either C-rich or O-rich stars on the 12-25-60 micron color-color diagram is the presence of spectral features in the mid-IR. O-rich stars show a 9.8 micron silicate feature, while C-rich stars have a SiC feature at 11.2 microns. IRAS observations indicate that the SiC feature is quite narrow and uniform in shape showing little variation from star to star. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) is 1.6 + or - 0.15 microns. On the other hand, the shape of the silicate feature varies widely among the O-rich stars, with a FWHM ranging from 2 to 3 microns. The characteristics of circumstellar dust shells should manifest themselves both in the flux spectrum and in the details of the spectral features. To provide a coherent interpretation for these IRAS observations, models were constructed (using a radiative transfer code) of dust shells around O-rich and C-rich stars. Realistic grain opacities were used which include spectral features of varying intrinsic widths (e.g., Gaussian features at 10 microns with half width at half maximum of 0.5 and 1.0 microns)

The Social Construction of Safe: Young Queer Men and HIV Knowledge

Part of an international comparative ethnography of queer young men in Sydney Australia and Vancouver Canada, this paper examines these men’s learning about HIV/AIDS. Both the specifics of HIV infection (how) and the means by which to reduce one’s vulnerability to HIV (what) are analyzed. Overall these men showed consistently accurate understanding of the what, even when their understanding of the how was flawed. This knowledge was almost entirely acquired from queer programs and services

This article examines the experiences of students after completing an online postgraduate learning technologies applications course with respect to the transfer of learning of skills, knowledges, and perspectives to their professional educational practice. Transfer of learning was perceived to have occurred with respect to overall course design and specific learning activities. Transfer of learning from the course to educational practice was seen as effective for most study participants; however, the strong community of practice inculcated within the course eroded after the course ended

The role of human ventral visual cortex in motion perception.

Visual motion perception is fundamental to many aspects of visual perception. Visual motion perception has long been associated with the dorsal (parietal) pathway and the involvement of the ventral 'form' (temporal) visual pathway has not been considered critical for normal motion perception. Here, we evaluated this view by examining whether circumscribed damage to ventral visual cortex impaired motion perception. The perception of motion in basic, non-form tasks (motion coherence and motion detection) and complex structure-from-motion, for a wide range of motion speeds, all centrally displayed, was assessed in five patients with a circumscribed lesion to either the right or left ventral visual pathway. Patients with a right, but not with a left, ventral visual lesion displayed widespread impairments in central motion perception even for non-form motion, for both slow and for fast speeds, and this held true independent of the integrity of areas MT/V5, V3A or parietal regions. In contrast with the traditional view in which only the dorsal visual stream is critical for motion perception, these novel findings implicate a more distributed circuit in which the integrity of the right ventral visual pathway is also necessary even for the perception of non-form motion

Using a task-based approach in evaluating the usability of BoBIs in an e-book environment

This paper reports on a usability evaluation of BoBIs (Back-of-the-book Indexes) as searching and browsing tools in an e-book environment. This study employed a task-based approach and within-subject design. The retrieval performance of a BoBI was compared with a ToC and Full-Text Search tool in terms of their respective effectiveness and efficiency for finding information in e-books. The results demonstrated that a BoBI was significantly more efficient (faster) and useful compared to a ToC or Full-Text Search tool for finding information in an e-book environment
