Not all Online Sexual Activities Are the Same

    Get PDF
Young people's use and participation in online sexual activities (OSA) has increased in the past two decades and has changed their behavior in the area of sexuality. The existing literature has some important limitations, concerning the assessment of the construct and its orientation toward problematic use, while ignoring its healthy use or social participation and its relationship with well-being. The main objective of this study was to analyze the relationships between the three types of OSA (compulsive, isolated, and social) proposed by Delmonico and Miller, as well as offline sexual behavior, and psychosexual well-being. It was also necessary to evaluate the factor structure of the Internet Sexual Screening Test (ISST). Participants were 1, 147 university students of both sexes, aged between 18 and 26 years, who completed a battery of online questionnaires. The main finding of the study is that, when controlling for other online sexual behavior, different types of OSA evaluated relate differently to offline sexual behavior and to psychosexual well-being, and that most young people made healthy use and participation of OSA. It also presents a new structure of the ISST. The discussion emphasizes the need to recognize the positive consequences of OSA to implement programs for the promotion of sexual health

Hubble Space Telescope STIS spectrum of RW Aurigae A: Evidence for an ionized beltlike structure and mass ejection in timescales of a few hours

Profiles of the UV semiforbidden lines of C III](1908) and Si III](1892) of RW Aur have been obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) STIS. The C III](1908) profile shows two high-velocity components at upsilon = +/-170 km s(-1) and a central one. The Si III](1892) profile is very broad (FWHM = 293 km s(-1)), and the high-velocity components are unresolved. The high-velocity components are most probably produced in a rotating belt similar to that detected in other sources of bipolar outflows. A radius between 2.7 R-* and the corotation radius (6.1 R-*) is derived, and a log T-e(K) similar or equal to 4.7 and log n(e)(cm(-3)) = 11.6 are estimated. The belt is clumpy, and the most likely source of heating is local X-ray radiation, probably associated with the release of magnetic energy. In addition, profiles of the optical lines of He I, Fe II, and Halpha retrieved from the HST archive have been analyzed. The spectra were obtained by shifting the STIS slit between exposures in the transverse direction to the flow. Two features vary from one exposure to another: a blueshifted emission feature (detected in the Fe II and He I lines) and a redshifted absorption feature (detected in Halpha), which are observed at the velocity of the blueshifted and redshifted components of the jet, respectively. There is a clear-cut correlation between the equivalent widths of these two components. These components are not associated with the flaring activity of the source, since they remain stable timescales of similar or equal to40 minutes. They are most likely associated with variations in the stellar/circumstellar environment in timescales of a few (similar or equal to5) hours, consistent with reports by other authors for variations of the veiling and the appearance of shell signatures in the optical spectrum

Severe Neurological Abnormalities in a Young Boy with Impaired Thyroid Hormone Sensitivity Due to a Novel Mutation in the MCT8 Gene

Monocarboxylate transporter 8 (MCT8) is an active and specific thyroid hormone transporter into neurons. MCT8 mutations cause an X-linked condition known as Allan-Herndon-Dudley syndrome and are characterized by impaired psychomotor development and typical abnormal thyroid function. We describe a 10-year-old boy with severe cognitive disability, axial hypotonia, spastic quadriplegia and sporadic dyskinetic episodes. He initially presented with thyroid dysfunction (high FT3, low rT3, low FT4 and normal TSH) and generalized retardation of the cerebral and cerebellar myelination in brain magnetic resonance imaging. The clinical and laboratory findings led to sequencing of the SLC16A2/MCT8 gene, which identified a novel missense mutation in exon 5. The study of peripheral markers of thyroid function suggests a paradoxical state of thyrotoxicosis in some peripheral tissues. Our patient had a typical clinical presentation at birth but because of the rarity of his disease his diagnosis was not made until the age of 7. The delay can also be explained by the omission of the free T3 assay in the first thyroid evaluation performed. This case therefore highlights the possible benefit of including the T3 assay in the study of patients with severe psychomotor disability of unknown etiology, thus eliminating extra costs for unnecessary complementary diagnostic tests.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

New constraints on protostellar jet collimation from high-density gas UV tracers

The analysis of high-resolution profiles of the semiforbidden UV lines of C III](1908) and Si III](1892) in the spectra of T Tauri stars (TTSs) shows the following : (1) There is C III](1908) and Si III](1892) emission at velocities that are similar to those observed in the optical forbidden lines formed in the TTSs jets. The luminosity of the UV lines is comparable to that of the optical lines. (2) The comparison between the optical and UV light curves indicates that the C III](1908) and Si III](1892) emission of RY Tau is not associated with accretion shocks, but it is produced farther than 2 R-* from the star. (3) The profiles of the UV semiforbidden lines are significantly broader than those of the optical forbidden lines. These profiles cannot be produced in a narrow collimated beam, and they are most likely produced in a bow-shaped shock wave formed at the base of the optical jet, where the hot gas emits in a broad range of projected radial velocities. (4) The atmosphere of RU Lup contributes significantly to the Si III](1892) emission. (5) A puzzling narrow feature is observed close to the C III](1908) line. The feature is blueshifted by -260 km s(-1), which corresponds to the wind terminal velocity measured in the P Cygni profile of the Mg II (UV1) lines. Moreover, constraints are derived on the characteristics of the C III](1908) and Si III](1892) emitting region in RY Tau. It is shown that 4.7 less than or equal to log T-e less than or equal to 5.0 and 10(9) cm(-3) less than or equal to N-e less than or equal to 10(11) cm(-3) provided that the emission is produced in a collisional plasma and that the 1665 Angstrom feature observed in low-dispersion International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) spectra is confirmed to be O III](1665) emission produced in the wind. These very high densities are difficult to generate in the shocks produced by the magnetic pinching of centrifugally driven magnetized disk winds. The data also suggest that the shocked layer has a radius of some few stellar radii and it is closer than similar to 38 R-* to the star

Altres ajuts: acords transformatius de la UABThe Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4) is an ultra-brief screening instrument to measure depressive and anxiety symptoms. This study evaluated the dimensionality and reliability of the online version of the PHQ-4 in a large sample of the general population in Colombia. Data were collected during the first phase of lockdown measures occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 18,061 adult participants completed the online version of the PHQ-4. The characteristics of the items and subscales were explored. Dimensionality was examined using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), including an examination of invariance (configural, metric, and scalar) across socio-demographic characteristics. Reliability indices were computed and known-groups validity was addressed by estimating associations between PHQ-4 scores and socio-demographic characteristics. The CFA showed significantly adequate fit indices for the expected two-factor structure, being invariant across gender, age, income level, education level, and region. Internal consistency was satisfactory for the PHQ-2 (α =.83), the GAD-2 (α =.79), and the PHQ-4 (α =.86). Higher scores on depressive (PHQ-2), anxiety (GAD-2), and psychological distress (PHQ-4) symptoms in females and young people, and those respondents with lower income, unemployed, and lower level of education were observed. The findings indicate that the PHQ-4 is a reliable scale for depressive and anxiety symptoms among adult Colombian people, being recommendable this tool for online surveys

Observations of T-Tauri Stars using HST-GHRS: I. Far Ultraviolet Emission Lines

We have analyzed GHRS data of eight CTTS and one WTTS. The GHRS data consists of spectral ranges 40 A wide centered on 1345, 1400, 1497, 1550, and 1900 A. These UV spectra show strong SiIV, and CIV emission, and large quantities of sharp (~40 km/s) H2 lines. All the H2 lines belong to the Lyman band and all the observed lines are single peaked and optically thin. The averages of all the H2 lines centroids for each star are negative which may indicate that they come from an outflow. We interpret the emission in H2 as being due to fluorescence, mostly by Ly_alpha, and identify seven excitation routes within 4 A of that line. We obtain column densities (10^12 to 10^15 cm^-2) and optical depths (~1 or less) for each exciting transition. We conclude that the populations are far from being in thermal equilibrium. We do not observe any lines excited from the far blue wing of Ly_alpha, which implies that the molecular features are excited by an absorbed profile. SiIV and CIV (corrected for H2 emission) have widths of ~200 km/s, and an array of centroids (blueshifted lines, centered, redshifted). These characteristics are difficult to understand in the context of current models of the accretion shock. For DR Tau we observe transient strong blueshifted emission, perhaps the a result of reconnection events in the magnetosphere. We also see evidence of multiple emission regions for the hot lines. While CIV is optically thin in most stars in our sample, SiIV is not. However, CIV is a good predictor of SiIV and H2 emission. We conclude that most of the flux in the hot lines may be due to accretion processes, but the line profiles can have multiple and variable components.Comment: 67 pages, 19 figures, Accepted in Ap

Three-Dimensional Simulations of Jets from Keplerian Disks: Self--Regulatory Stability

We present the extension of previous two-dimensional simulations of the time-dependent evolution of non-relativistic outflows from the surface of Keplerian accretion disks, to three dimensions. The accretion disk itself is taken to provide a set of fixed boundary conditions for the problem. The 3-D results are consistent with the theory of steady, axisymmetric, centrifugally driven disk winds up to the Alfv\'en surface of the outflow. Beyond the Alfv\'en surface however, the jet in 3-D becomes unstable to non-axisymmetric, Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities. We show that jets maintain their long-term stability through a self-limiting process wherein the average Alfv\'enic Mach number within the jet is maintained to order unity. This is accomplished in at least two ways. First, poloidal magnetic field is concentrated along the central axis of the jet forming a ``backbone'' in which the Alfv\'en speed is sufficiently high to reduce the average jet Alfv\'enic Mach number to unity. Second, the onset of higher order Kelvin-Helmholtz ``flute'' modes (m \ge 2) reduce the efficiency with which the jet material is accelerated, and transfer kinetic energy of the outflow into the stretched, poloidal field lines of the distorted jet. This too has the effect of increasing the Alfv\'en speed, and thus reducing the Alfv\'enic Mach number. The jet is able to survive the onset of the more destructive m=1 mode in this way. Our simulations also show that jets can acquire corkscrew, or wobbling types of geometries in this relatively stable end-state, depending on the nature of the perturbations upon them. Finally, we suggest that jets go into alternating periods of low and high activity as the disappearance of unstable modes in the sub-Alfv\'enic regime enables another cycle of acceleration to super-Alfv\'enic speeds.Comment: 57 pages, 22 figures, submitted to Ap

Background: Osteoporosis should be prevented, diagnosed and treated, preferably before the fragility fracture occurs. The objective was to analyze primary and secondary interventions carried out in individuals diagnosed with femur fragility fracture at Teruel in 2014. Methods: Descriptive retrospective study. Variables assessed were sex, age, main health district, place of residence, basal functional situation, diagnosis on osteoporosis, hip or vertebral fracture, loss of height, use of FRAX tool, treatment on discharge, survival and cause of exitus. Student''s t-test and ANOVA were used for quantitative variables by categories and regression for linear relationships. Results: 148 patients were included. 123 were women median age was 87 years, 123 ( 76, 4%) were women, 27, 4% of the patients were totally or severely dependent for activities of daily living and 33% of them were living in a nursing home. There was a previous history of hip fracture in 10, 1%, and one or more vertebral fractures in 10, 1%. FRAX r tool was not used in any case. 12, 2% of patients had been treated with calcium prior to fracture, 11, 5% with vitamin D, and 6, 8% of them with antiosteoporotic drugs. Only 52, 7% were treated for secondary prevention after discharge. At the end of follow-up, 25, 7% of hip fractured patients had died. Median survivorship of deceased patients was 64, 5 days. 42, 3% of exitus were caused by cardiovascular disease, 23, 1% by infection and 11, 5% by neoplasms. Conclusions: Primary pharmacologic prevention and assessment of osteoporosis or risk of fracture are unfrequent in our health district.. Although pharmacologic treatment is prescribed more frequently in Teruel than in other areas after a hip or vertebral fracture, additional measures should be taken in order to improve fragility fracture prevention
