On the structure of thin4He films on solid hydrogen

    Get PDF
We have investigated the adsorption of4He onto a quench-condensed H2 film by means of surface state electrons. Oscillations in the surface state electron conductivity clearly reveal the layerwise character of the adsorption. At temperatures below 2K we have observed an anomaly in the conductivity around the completion of the first monolayer. This new feature is interpreted as an indication of a liquid-to-solid phase transition in the first layer

White primer permits a corrosion-resistant coating of minimum weight

White primer for coating 2219 aluminum alloy supplies a base for a top coating of enamel. A formulation of pigments and vehicle results in a primer with high corrosion resistance and minimum film thickness

Testing and evaluation of solid lubricants for gas bearings

    Get PDF
The testing and results of testing solid film lubricants for gas lubricated bearing applications are reported. The tests simulated operational hazards of tilting pad gas bearings. The presence of a low coefficient of friction and the endurance of the solid film lubricant were the criteria for judging superior performance. All solid lubricants tested were applied to a plasma sprayed chrome oxide surface. Molybdenum disulfide and graphite fluoride were the solid lubricants tested; other test parameters included the method of application of the solid lubricant and the surface finish of the plasma sprayed coating. In general, the application of a solid film lubricant was found to significantly improve the coefficient of friction of the rubbing surfaces

On the singular values and eigenvalues of the Fox–Li and related operators

    Get PDF
The Fox–Li operator is a convolution operator over a finite interval with a special highly oscillatory kernel. It plays an important role in laser engineering. However, the mathematical analysis of its spectrum is still rather incomplete. In this expository paper we survey part of the state of the art, and our emphasis is on showing how standard Wiener–Hopf theory can be used to obtain insight into the behaviour of the singular values of the Fox–Li operator. In addition, several approximations to the spectrum of the Fox–Li operator are discussed and results on the singular values and eigenvalues of certain related operators are derived

Solutions to Cosmological Problems with Energy Conservation and Varying c, G and Lambda

The flatness and cosmological constant problems are solved with varying speed of light c, gravitational coupling strength G and cosmological parameter Lambda, by explicitly assuming energy conservation of observed matter. The present solution to the flatness problem is the same as the previous solution in which energy conservation was absent.Comment: 5 pages, Replaced with LaTex file with minor change
