The imprint of crustal density heterogeneities on regional seismic wave propagation
Density heterogeneities are the source of mass transport in the Earth. However, the 3-D density structure remains poorly constrained because travel times of seismic waves are only weakly sensitive to density. Inspired by recent developments in seismic waveform tomography, we investigate whether the visibility of 3-D density heterogeneities may be improved by inverting not only travel times of specific seismic phases but complete seismograms.
As a first step in this direction, we perform numerical experiments to estimate the effect of 3-D crustal density heterogeneities on regional seismic wave propagation. While a finite number of numerical experiments may not capture the full range of possible scenarios, our results still indicate that realistic crustal density variations may lead to travel-time shifts of up to ∼ 1 s and amplitude variations of several tens of percent over propagation distances of ∼ 1000 km. Both amplitude and travel-time variations increase with increasing epicentral distance and increasing medium complexity, i.e. decreasing correlation length of the heterogeneities. They are practically negligible when the correlation length of the heterogeneities is much larger than the wavelength. However, when the correlation length approaches the wavelength, density-induced waveform perturbations become prominent. Recent regional-scale full-waveform inversions that resolve structure at the scale of a wavelength already reach this regime.
Our numerical experiments suggest that waveform perturbations induced by realistic crustal density variations can be observed in high-quality regional seismic data. While density-induced travel-time differences will often be small, amplitude variations exceeding ±10 % are comparable to those induced by 3-D velocity structure and attenuation. While these results certainly encourage more research on the development of 3-D density tomography, they also suggest that current full-waveform inversions that use amplitude information may be biased due to the neglect of 3-D variations in density
Prevalence and factors associated with thinness in rural Polish children
A lot of attention has been focused on obesity, however, the other extreme—thinness—may lead to inhibition of physical and intellectual development. The aim was to assess the prevalence of thinness and determine the associated factors in children from rural populations. We used data from the cross-sectional sample of 3048 children, examined in schools from a district in southern Poland. The sample included 89% of the district departments, and included a proportion of rural and small town populations—a representative one for the region. Thinness was determined based on the criteria proposed by Cole and Lobstein. Biological, sociodemographic and lifestyle factors were analysed. The odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using logistic regression analysis. The prevalence of thinness was 11.5% in boys and 13.5% in girls. In the younger group, it was similar in boys and girls at 11.8%; whereas in the older group, it was 11.1% and 14.5%, respectively. The prevalence of thinness Grade 3 in girls was two times higher than in boys. The increased index of leisure time physical activity was connected with thinness in prepubertal boys. The mechanism determining the development of thinness is very complex and further exploration of this trend is recommended
Physico-chemical and biological evaluation of doxycycline loaded into hybrid oxide-polymer layer on TiMo alloy
Oxide-polymer coatings were formed on the surface of the vanadium-free Ti-15Mo titanium alloy. The Ti alloy surface was modified by the plasma electrolytic oxidation process, and then, the polymer layer of a poly (D, Llactide- co-glycolide) with doxycycline was formed. The polymer evenly covered the porous oxide layer and filled some of the pores. However, the microstructure of the polymer surface was completely different from that of the PEO layer. The surface morphology, roughness and microstructure of the polymer layer were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and a confocal microscope. The results confirmed the effectiveness of polymer and doxycycline deposition in their stable chemical forms. The drug analysis was performed by highperformance liquid chromatography. The H NMR technique was used to monitor the course of hydrolytic degradation of PLGA. It was shown that the PLGA layer is hydrolysed within a few weeks, and the polyglycolidyl part of the copolymer is hydrolysed to glycolic acid as first and much faster than the polylactide one to lactic acid. This paper presents influence of different microstructures on the biological properties of modified titanium alloys. Cytocompatibility and bacterial adhesion tests were evaluated using osteoblast-like MG-63 cells and using the reference S. aureus and S. epidermidis strains. The results showed that the optimum concentration of doxycycline was found to inhibit the growth of the bacteria and that the layer is still cytocompatible
Dual target ligands with 4-tert-butylphenoxy scaffold as histamine H3 receptor antagonists and monoamine oxidase B inhibitors
Dual target ligands are a promising concept for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease (PD). A combination of monoamine oxidase B (MAO B) inhibition with histamine H3 receptor (H3R) antagonism could have positive effects on dopamine regulation. Thus, a series of twenty-seven 4-tert-butylphenoxyalkoxyamines were designed as potential dual-target ligands for PD based on the structure of 1-(3-(4-tert-butylphenoxy)propyl)piperidine (DL76). Probed modifications included the introduction of different cyclic amines and elongation of the alkyl chain. Synthesized compounds were investigated for human H3R (hH3R) affinity and human MAO B (hMAO B) inhibitory activity. Most compounds showed good hH3R affinities with Ki values below 400 nM, and some of them showed potent inhibitory activity for hMAO B with IC50 values below 50 nM. However, the most balanced activity against both biological targets showed DL76 (hH3R: Ki = 38 nM and hMAO B: IC50 = 48 nM). Thus, DL76 was chosen for further studies, revealing the nontoxic nature of DL76 in HEK293 and neuroblastoma SH-SY5Ycells. However, no neuroprotective effect was observed for DL76 in hydrogen peroxide-treated neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells. Furthermore, in vivo studies showed antiparkinsonian activity of DL76 in haloperidol-induced catalepsy (Cross Leg Position Test) at a dose of 50 mg/kg body weight

Procesy kształtowania nowoczesnej gospodarki
Publikacja recenzowana / Peer-reviewed publicationZE WSTĘPU: Zainteresowania naukowe pracowników Wydziału Zarządzania i Marketingu Krakowskiej Szkoły Wyższej im. A.F. Modrzewskiego obejmują szerokie spektrum problemów z zakresu ekonomii i zarządzania.
i technologiczne.
ułatwiających funkcjonowanie i rozwój przedsiębiorstw. Ich elementem jest
przepływ informacji wewnątrz firmy, a także relacje partnerskie z kooperantami
i klientami.
Piąta grupa prac prezentuje doświadczenia w dziedzinie zarządzania edukacją
w krajach Unii Europejskiej. Proces Boloński wymusza działania dostosowawcze podmiotów realizujących zadania w dziedzinie nauki i edukacji
do wspólnych standardów.
wykładowcy i nauczyciela.
akademickiego 2005/06. Ze względu na ograniczony rozmiar tej publikacji,
zagadnienia związane z zarządzaniem w aspekcie jakości i ekologii będą
przedmiotem osobnego opracowania
