WOS: 000189164100020This present study was performed to identify reproductive peculiarities of the silverbelly (Leiognathus klunzingeri) in Yumurtalik Bight. For this purpose, 430 individuals were obtained by monthly sampling between October 1997 and September 1998 and then they were examined. By using the monthly changes in the mean values of the Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) and Fulton's Condition Factor (K), we found that reproduction period occurred between July and September, length at first maturity was 5.8 cm and 5.5 cm for males and females, respectively, egg diameter was between 0.8 and 1.0 mm and mean annual fecundity was 2789 +/- 2109

Length-weight relationships (LWR) were estimated for 31 teleost fish species caught in the Babadillimani Bight on the western entrance of Mersin Bay, Turkey. Sampling was carried out from May 1999 to April 2000 at monthly intervals using bottom trawl nets of 6 mm cod-end mesh size. The b values varied from 2.662 for Echelus myrus to 3.395 for Gobius niger, with a mean of 3.024 (± 0.166). This study presents the first estimation of LWR for seven species (Blennius ocellaris, Centracanthus cirrus, E. myrus, Engraulis encrasicolus, G. niger, Synodus saurus, and Zeus faber) distributed along the northeastern Mediterranean coastal area. © 2006 Blackwell Verlag, Berlin

WOS: 000423295400003This study was carried out in a domestic, slaughter house and industrial discharging region of Ceyhan River and under the crest of the Aslantas Dam on the same river. In this study, the state of water quality and their effects on some hematological parameters of African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) was identified. Reserach, in the area under the crest of the Aslantas Dam (station I) located on the Ceyhan River and discharging region on the same river (station II). water temperature, chemical oxygen demand (COD), pH, nitrate (NO3-N), nitrite (NO2-N), ammonia (NH3-N) and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) values were determined in these two stations. The study was realised on 45 fish from each station during the summer seasons (June, July, August). The hematological parameters included erythrocyte (RBC) and RBC indices (MCV: mean corpuscular volume, MCH: mean corpuscular hemoglobin, MCHC: mean corpuscular hemoglobin consentration), leukocyte (WBC), haemoglobine (Hb), hematocrit (Hct) values and leukocyte cell formulas (lymphocyte, monocyte, neutrophil, eosinophil), serum glucose and protein levels were evaluated. The physico-chemical parameters observed that the water at station II had higher COD, NH3-N, NO2-N, pH and SRP than at station I. In this study, WBC values and leukocyte cell formulas of C. gariepinus were found increasing by means of environmental stressors and also, RBC, RBC indices, Hb and Hct values were determined decreasing in C. gariepinus collected from station II (p<0.05). On the other hand, serum glucose levels were increased and protein levels were decreased in station II. The study was found to be important in the biomonitoring of pollution of aquatic ecosystems, in terms of rational use of hematological parameters

Study of Ultrasonically Sprayed ZnO Films: Thermal Annealing Effect

ZnO thin films were deposited on microscope glass substrates by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis technique. The effects of annealing under various temperatures on the optical and structural properties of ZnO thin films were analyzed. The as-deposited and annealed ZnO thin films were investigated by UV/VIS spectrophotometer and X-ray diffractometer. Some of the optical properties of the films such as transmittance, absorbance and band gap energy were investigated by UV/VIS spectrophotometer. The crystallinity levels of the films were investigated, the structural parameters such as diffraction angle, full-width at half maximum, lattice parameters, grain size and dislocation density were calculated and structural properties were analyzed. X-ray diffraction patterns indicated that the ZnO films had a polycrystalline hexagonal wurtzite structure

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X linked recessive disorder caused by a deficient or defective synthesis of dystrophine protein. Children with DMD are rarely symptomatic at birth or in early infancy, and the diagnosis is extremely difficult to establish and even it is made by chance. In this article a 5.5-month-old infant in whom increases in liver function tests were detected in routine tests performed for general anesthesia and later diagnosed as Duchenne muscular dystrophy is presented. It has been emphasized that DMD, as a rare disease should be considered in etiological investigations in infants with elevations in liver function tests of any origin but with normal physical examination findings, and the utility of testing for simple biochemical markers such as creatinin kinase in establishing diagnosis before performing further detailed investigations should be kept in mind
